About Richard Scurry
My name is Michele and I am the rental agent for Summertime Hill. The owners live in Charleston SC but love Cooperstown so much that they spend 4 months here every summer. Richard is co-founder of the Bible Literacy Project, which has a textbook - the Bible and Its Influence - now being used in academic elective Bible courses by 600 public high schools in 43 states. His wife Pam is a world-class designer whose work has appeared in over 100 feature magazine articles. Creating a country home like Summertime Hill was a life-long dream of hers, and she spent 2 full years on its renovation and interior design. It was our country home for years, until we bought a house in the Village which is better in the winters.
Richard Scurry purchased this House in 2001
Why Richard Scurry chose Cooperstown
We bought this property because we fell in love with Lake Otsego - the beauty of the hills on all sides, the shimmering surface of the water, the lack of development (much of the land around it is owned by a foundation) and then our whole family loves to waterski. We also loved the house itself - built over 100 years ago, with a solidity modern houses don't have, with windows low enough to see the lake from a chair or bed, and a wonderful warm feel to it that warms one's heart.
What makes this House unique
Spectacular views of the lake while eating on the porch or reading a book in the wicker swing or in a rocker. You can eat in the dining room, breakfast room, on the porch, or down at the lake on the raised platform deck. The interior is stunningly beautiful, with the interior design by the owner's wife, Pam - a world class designer, nationally recognized for her taste in colors, fabrics, antiques, designer furniture, all of which she coordinates to bring grace, charm, warmth and beauty to the entire house. Flowers everywhere - a garden in front of the house and in pots on the front porch and the side porth.

Beautiful vintage home on the lake with great views throughout. Great communication from the owners and property manager. Large enough for a few families who may want to be on the lake when going to CDP. About 10 miles from CDP ( a 15-20 min ride). Owner came by and gave us some coffee. He was really nice and took care of anything we needed.
The property is very pretty. The neighbor down by the dock was very pleasant and allowed my children to swim to the dock.
I would recommend that the washer / dryer be in a more convenient location as entering the basement is a little frightening. I would also recommend updating the TV too.
The management company was very pleasant to work with and helpful too.
I would recommend this property if you like the Victorian theme and want to have an experience of going back in time. This house includes the modern amenities and captures a moment of time.
Thanks for the experience and a great place
Thanks so much for taking the time to review Summertime Hill.
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and were able to find a little time to enjoy beautiful Otsego Lake.
As you noted, this Victorian takes you back in time with its grand and stately style, it's pretty decor, antique furnishings, and inviting front porch which takes in sweeping views of the lake.
We appreciate your feedback - it assists us as we plan for future seasons. The comfort of our guests is paramount. Thank you!
Back in time
This is an older home that will send you back in time. Reminded me of the stories my parents used to tell me. Lots of floral wallpaper. Beautiful location. Could not beat the view from the front porch.
There was only one functional bathroom for us. My son stayed in the room with the shower, but he said the water never got warm. The bathroom that we all used has a huge tub/shower combo. I had a hard time getting in and out of the bathtub. It’s very tall.
We did have a problem with the washing machine. It was fixed within a couple of days. The washing machine and dryer are in the unfinished basement. That was a bit freaky.
The stairs were also a bit steep for me, but luckily I managed them.
I would not stay here with small children. It’s a bit cluttered and they would have a hard time not breaking anything or finding a place to play.
Hi LeAnn, We appreciate you posting a review for us after your visit. It is valuable feedback such as yours that helps us improve to provide the best possible guest experience. You are right, this house is immaculate and full of lovely antiques which all help to create the "stepping back in time" feeling the owners wish to evoke. We do agree, this is ideal for adults and teenagers although we welcome children over 5. I am sorry to hear that the water temperature was not adequate. We would have been happy to send our trusted handyman right away to resolve the issue for you just as he did with the washer. Gratefully we have not had any issues since. As you stated, the other shower is a bit taller to step over as it is also a deep & luxurious whirlpool tub.
Ultimately, it sounds like you found the house to be accommodating and we hope you found time to relax on our comfy chaise lounge chairs on our private lakeside dock, and to swim in our crystal clear waters. Thank you, Michele (rental agent)
Lots of historical character
It was a little hard to find but otherwise it suited our needs.
Beautiful home in the perfect location with exquisite furnishings, and a gracious host!
This home was a joy to stay in! Every detail was carefully attended to. We felt such a warm welcome from the fresh flowers to the owners favorite coffee left for us. It was nice to have a number to contact throughout the week and Richard was very kind to check in with us.
The location could not be more perfect! We stayed here while our son played baseball in Cooperstown Dreams Park and the drive never took us longer than 15 minutes. There are many close restaurants and things to do. There are menus and recommendations from the owner left for you to read. The Main Street of Cooperstown was only 5 minutes away.
The views out of the windows of the bedrooms upstairs are beautiful. We spent mornings rocking on the porch swing. I only wish the rising and setting sun took longer so we could have spent more time enjoying the view from the front porch. Swimming in the lake and relaxing by the water on the private dock was our favorite thing to do.
The house is well equipped with everything you would need. The owners literally thought of it all. Professional stove and cookware made cooking easy. Spices and sugar for coffee are all nice to have provided. There is a users guide to the whole home on the key desk, and it was very useful.
The beds were so comfortable and linens are luxurious. Plenty of pillows and blankets. The charm to which the house is decorated cannot be justly described. Best to see in person! I would not stay anywhere else if returning to this cozy town.
Homeowner was very accommodating and communication during was on point!
Loved the porch with swing. Easy access to water. We stayed for a weekend with family for a wedding. Very comfortable stay with a unique Victorian charm that suits Cooperstown.
Cooperstown is the home to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Glimmerglass Festival Opera House, Fenimore Art Museum and Farmer's Museum. One of the center points of Cooperstown is beautiful Otsego Lake with several lake front dining options w. Another attraction is the famous Leather stocking golf course with lush greens.
