Welcome to Buttercup Hideaway, your spacious lakeside retreat designed for unforgettable get-togethers. Set on a private, wooded 2-acre lot on beautiful Freeborn Lake, this four-bedroom, two-bath cabin offers the perfect backdrop for connection, relaxation, and outdoor fun.

Inside, the open-concept main level makes gathering effortless. Whether you're cooking together in the kitchen, sharing a meal around the dining table, or lounging in the living room with panoramic lake views, everyone can stay connected in one welcoming space. Step onto the deck for morning coffee, group happy hours, or watching kids play in the yard below.

The walk-out lower level is built for together time—featuring a large family/game room and a bar area that opens right out to the patio and fire-pit. It’s ideal for multi-generational families, larger groups, or those who want separate hangout zones for adults and kids/teens.

Outside, the lake is the star: paddle out in the canoe or kayak, swim from the hard-sand bottom shoreline, fish off the dock, or roast s’mores by the campfire. With plenty of parking, Buttercup Hideaway easily accommodates bigger groups and all their gear.

Located just 15 minutes from Alexandria, shopping, dining, and entertainment are close and convenient without sacrificing the peace and quiet of country life.

Summer Activities: swimming, canoeing, kayaking, hiking in nearby parks, antiquing in downtown Alexandria, Casey's Amusement Park, Big Splash water park, and, of course, the Big Ole Statue is a must see!

Check out Alexandria Jet Ski Rental for jet ski and pontoon rentals. You can coordinate with them to have the pontoon delivered directly to our dock so it's ready when you arrive!

Winter Activities: snowmobile right from the cabin to trails that are just a quarter mile away, ski or snowboard at Andes Tower hill, check out the Runestone museum and explore the mystery of the Runestone, and visit Carlos Creek Winery or one of the amazing local breweries. Or just cozy up inside with one of the many games or puzzles we provide for you.

We love this out of the way cabin on the lake. We have rented for several years and always find everything we need for our stay. Its always clean and has all the comforts of home.

The cabin was very clean, comfortable and well stocked. There was plenty of room for our family of 7 to sit and watch a movie together in the evening. There was easy access to the clean lake. It was a very enjoyable week at this cabin and would definitely stay again!

We had a great time at Buttercup. The cabin and location was perfect for our family. The kitchen is well stocked with cookware, dishes, etc. We enjoyed the outdoor area where we played so many fun games. Thanks for a wonderful week!

Lovely property. Not a fan of the challenging spiral staircase. Difficult to go up wand down, especially with luggage. Railing is not secured at the top as well. Thank you. Nice carpet.

We love Buttercup!! This is the second time we’ve stayed there and it was fantastic!! There are 10 of us (6 adults and 4 kids) plus 2 dogs and we felt that there was plenty of room for all of us. The cabin was clean, and had a ton of activities and games for the whole family. We also enjoyed the campfire area, and the kids loved the lake!! Communication with the owners was great too!! We felt very welcomed!! We hope to vacation there again next year. Thank you for the hospitality, and we are grateful for all the memories made!!

Buttercup Hideaway was a perfect place for my family to unwind for a long weekend. The house was very clean, had plenty of room, and had several nice amenities. The view of the lake from the cabin was amazing, especially the sunrise!!! We will be back again for sure!!

Our stay was wonderful ! Rooms were clean. The views out the living room and dining room windows were awsome. Lots of small creature wildlife to watch. Also many geese and swans. We hiked up the road a ways and back ...enjoyed the spring temps. I would definitely stay again !Thank you for an enjoyable " Girls Cabin Weekend" !!

My husband and I stayed with our Black Lab, she enjoyed going out for walks with our grandkids. We had our two daughters and their husbands and two granddaughters and grandson from Wisconsin and South Dakota, plenty of room for us for sleeping. We went to Carlos Creek Winery also the Brewery 22 Northman, ordered wood fire pizza excellent! We also spent time in Alexandria,..Great weekend with our family! Very beautiful and relaxed place to stay!

Beautiful cabin on the lake! Very spacious and lots of fun games and activities to do here. The host was helpful and accommodating when we had questions. We can’t wait to be back in the warmer weather to try out fishing on the lake.

We felt very good about this place. It was clean, well organized, roomy and very comfortable. The view of the lake was beautiful, enjoyed watching the sunrise each morning. The location is close to Alexandria for shopping, also grocery store in town as well. Near Rune County park where we enjoyed snowshoeing. I highly recommend a stay at Buttercup Hideaway.

This cozy lakeside cabin was the perfect winter escape, with peaceful snow-covered views and a quiet, relaxing atmosphere from morning to night. The space was warm, clean, and thoughtfully stocked, making it easy to settle in and unwind after a day in the cold. Watching the frozen lake from the window with a hot drink in hand made the whole stay feel calm, magical, and unforgettable.

It felt like home, very comfortable beds, well supplied kitchen, wonderful living and dining areas, big windows to enjoy nature while sitting on your recliner. We caught fish in early April, fishing from shore with some ice still on the lake. We built a bonfire in the fire-pit with snow still standing. The time spent in the house cooking, eating, playing games, etc, was also fun. My favorite moments were sitting inside watching the sun rise and set and the moon shining on the lake, very peaceful.

This cabin was such a great little getaway and an easy drive—just over two hours from St. Paul and super straightforward to get to. The wall of windows facing the lake is by far the best part. It was so peaceful to relax on the couch with a book and take in the lake views. I also appreciated having a Keurig coffee maker so I didn’t have to worry about packing coffee. The cabin is about a 20-minute drive into Alexandria. It’s far enough from town that you really feel like you’re getting away, but still close enough to make a quick trip in for groceries or to grab a bite to eat. The cabin felt very private, though I was there in the winter, so it may feel a little different during the summer months. I slept upstairs in the king bedroom and the bed was very comfortable. Overall, a cozy, peaceful place and I’d absolutely stay here again.

The kitchen was well stocked with equipment. Appreciated the attention paid to little kids. There were kids’ plates and utensils, a pack and play, a swing, and chairs for the littles. Beautiful place.

Excellent stay for our family vacation of 7 and two well behaved dogs. Spiral staircase was challenging from up to downstairs. Host is very easy to communicate with. Coffee bar was wonderful. Condiments were great. Very clean establishment. Upstairs balcony does not have stairs going down. Fishing in middle of June was Excellent. There is a dock with a two seater bench, and steps going into the lake from side of dock. There is no fish cleaning station, but hose from outside spigot helps for cleaning fish. Side by side refrigerator provides freezer and lots of room for cooling items. Ice maker is a great amenity. Washer and Dryer is very nice. Weather was nice spent most of time outside, but game room downstairs could breakup indoors time. We did see variety wildlife, Turkeys, Deer, a hummingbird that checked in on us every day on the balcony, a nesting Robin above the air conditioner in the kitchen, and a special visitor, a nesting snapping turtle on the drive way outside the front door.
