About this property
Rock Cut Cottage Marquette - 2 Bedrooms, Lake Views, SAUNA & 17 acres of hiking
Discover this 2-bedroom cottage in Marquette. The space features a queen bed, a full bed, and a twin bed, perfect for families or friends traveling together. Two bathrooms add convenience and privacy during your stay. The Rock Cut Cottage is 7 minutes away from downtown Marquette, yet packs its own nature-filled possibilities right on the property, such as hiking to incredible clifftop views that overlook Lake Superior, or stargazing from the comfort of the deck to the sound of the waves. The property's location is ideal for biking, with nearby trails and a paved bike path right across the street that runs along the lake. The Rock Cut Cottage is only a 10 minute drive from Marquette Mountain, and a convenient 8 minutes from Northern Michigan University. Our wood-fired sauna by the lake at night is a dream come true.
Watch the sunrise over Lake Superior from the comfort of the living room, kitchen, or the roomy deck. The storied stones of the ruins make for a perfect bonfire setting. You can hop from the UP-built sauna into the stream that cascades behind the cabin.
If you're feeling even more adventurous, you can make your way up to the top of the iconic cliff that overlooks Marquette, situated on the south end of the property. Be respectfully quiet, as bald eagles built their nest near the peak. You may even catch a glimpse of them if you're lucky.
At night you can lay out on the deck for a view of the milky way, maybe even the northern lights. Marquette glitters to the northwest of the cottage, but the sky is dark enough around the cabin for stellar views while also being able to conveniently use the restroom or grab a toasty snack during your stargazing.
As you enter the cabin you'll find a play room with board games and puzzles, and space to drop your ski equipment before you head up the stairs to the rest of the cabin.
Upstairs you'll find large windows that overlook the shimmering waters of Lake Superior from the living room and the kitchen. Nestle into the sectional couch beside the fireplace with a great book, or use the pull-down projector tv, which discreetly folds away in case you are wanting a retreat away from technology during your stay. High speed internet access is provided.
Rest in the serene primary bedroom with a memory foam queen mattress, or the bunk room which features a twin and a full memory foam mattress. Pillowy featherdown comforters await, with soft light from the forest behind the cabin filtering through the windows.
The kitchen is fully outfitted with new, high quality pots and pans if you'd like some home-cooking during your stay. We also include a guide to Marquette's restaurant, café, and bar scene, including dining options for those with food allergies.
Adventure and relaxation await! Enjoy your time in Marquette at our enchanting cottage.

About the host
Hosted by Taylor Freund
My husband and I met each other at Northern Michigan University, where we are both alums, and we sincerely enjoy helping people have a wonderful time visiting Marquette.
I'm originally from the lower peninsula of Michigan, but Lake Superior immediately felt like home to me. I enjoy hiking, going to the Saturday farmer's market in Marquette, singing, and enjoying art. I'd be happy to give you in the inside scoop on the most fun places to explore in Marquette!

Why they chose this property
We fell in love with the amazing views and wilderness around the property. The stones are practically vibrating with songs. We wanted to make sure this property's forest and ecosystem remained protected, and have plans to partner with local tribal community members as well as DNR to care for and collaborate with this forest.
What makes this property unique
So many things! One noteworthy aspect is the history of the Rock Cut, and how it got its name. This land has been in relationship with the Anishnaabe and Menominee peoples for thousands of years. In more recent history, this cliff had been a site for mining, which is where the name Rock Cut came from. What's more, the foundation of the home has a stone foot of the neighboring cliff that juts into the basement itself, which the builder of the home chiseled away by hand in the building process.
Bald eagles circling overhead, their wings lit by the sunset - pretty cool.
Proximity to town, while still deeply in touch with the UP wilderness. The nightsky at the Rock Cut is truly something to see.
