About the property

Old World Charm Meets Luxurious Creature Comforts walking distance from winery

Rustic architectural accents and exquisite cozy charm gently wraps you in warmth and comfort as soon as arriving. The wrap around porch, large deck, and roomy interior, with two full baths, will provide ample space for easy and luxurious living.

Private. Well Appointed. Unique.

FEEL THE STRESS JUST MELT AWAY when driving through the country gate.

Spectacular Hot Tub experience.

With a glass of wine in hand, take a romantic stroll through the vineyard at sunset to your very own private cabin, just a short walk away from Blue Sky Vineyard.

While all of our cabins have gorgeous views, The Creole Cabin wins the prize for the most spectacular views as it sits higher on the ridge. Looking out the window or standing on the porch, the view of the sun washed vineyards, rolling prairie, and color combinations of the unending forest brings serenity to the soul.

The attached private hot tub pavilion has a fully structured roof matching the architecture of the cottage. With the roomy, exquisitely cozy interior, full gourmet kitchen, gas grill, fire pit, two full bathrooms, and a hot tub, you might have to resist the urge to simple stay at the cabin instead of heading out to the rest of the wine trail!

The design inspiration for the Creole Cabin came from the Bolduc House in Ste. Genevieve, Mo. The Creole Cabin is 100 yards South of The Cove and 200 yards West of The Hollow.

Feel pampered with the extras.

Wrap yourself in luxurious 100% Turkish and Egyptian cotton spa robes. (Perfect for the Hot Tub.)

Gourmet coffee beans ready to grind and brew.

Stays including Fri/Sat or 4 days or longer will have local farm fresh eggs and pastries or muffins awaiting their arrival.

Soak in the PRIVATE HOT TUB in the the charming pavilion just off the back porch. Enjoy the incredible view of the moon and crystal clear stars that are only visible away from the glare of city lights.

About Nancy Trude

Long time residents of the area, our desire is to share our love for the beautiful, diverse, and unique surroundings of southern Illinois. The love of the land is also one of the inspirations to build the cabins at Rocky Comfort Cabins with solar powered lighting and TVs and solar heated water. We're partially off the grid!

Why Nancy Trude chose Makanda

Rocky Comfort Cabins was built to be part of the landscape. The area around Rocky Comfort Cabins is rich in wildlife, close to towns, but far enough away to feel secluded, and within a short walk to Blue Sky Vineyard and short drive to Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour, the first zip line adventure in Southern Illinois.

When you and your family sit on the porch as the sun goes down, your worries and cares will evaporate with the day light. The clear sky at night will allow you to see and share the constellations with your children. Escape the city and the stress and come stay with Rocky Comfort Cabins.

What makes this cabin unique

Rocky Comfort Cabins is the only cabin rental in Southern Illinois to utilize solar power for our eco-friendly cabin rentals. Our cabins have the lowest impact on the area surrounding the cabins, allowing you to enjoy all that Southern Illinois nature can offer.

We are also located in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest, so you will feel as if you have your own private retreat. Want more adventure? Shawnee Bluffs Canopy tour is just down the road and the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail passes by, with your first stop being Blue Sky Vineyard.

This place is amazing!! We have been to southern ill different times, decided to stay at the Creole House. The main reason is because it is centrally located between the state parks and the wineries. We can not say enough about this cabin,as soon as you walk inside the door, you feel like you are at your home.Ed and Nancy has thought of everything. Our first night the fireplace did not work,no big deal at the time,my husband called Ed the next day, when we returned to the cabin they had it fixed and we enjoyed it that evening, can not thank them enough for that! Go and experience this beautiful cabin, enjoy the hot tub, firepit which they supply the wood, and go feel like you are at home. Blue Sky Winery is walking distance, which is my favorite place! THANK YOU ED & NANCY,WE WILL BE BACK!!

Just Gorgeous

  • 5 of 5

O My Gosh!, This place was amazing! We usually go to northern Illinois but decided to go South, which was a great idea. We live in a small town and needed a getaway. So we searched the internet and found this wonderful place. Upon Arrival I was like this is beautiful and that was just the road to get there...When we got to the creole house the outside was amazing, first we couldn't find the key which was odd when we did find it my stomache was like come on open up..When we stepped in we were in awe. There were muffins on the table we had everything we needed...The hot tub was a must that is the first thing we did that night.Which was the best. We went to the winery the next afternoon and we had never been. Needless to say I am in love with the "Hysterica" it is really delicious. I would say if you are not a wine drinker when you leave the winery you will be..We enjoyed our stay very much, and will be back in the near future. My stress level went done to lie nothing in the few days we were there...The deer were like right out of our back door. I seen a huge buck which i haven't seen in a long time...The sky was great especially when the moon was out...I could keep going on and on and still wouldn't be able to get in all of the experiences. So basically find when you can stay and book a little pricey, but it is worth it...Thanks for a great two days Ed and Nancy, you guys are the best and treat your guest with the up most respect. Oh and I almost forgot the butterflies were amazing too. I could have just sat and watched them all day each day.

Owner's Response: The drive through the Shawnee Hills is very beautiful isn't it? Finding The Creole House at the end of that drive is even better :) Isn't the plethora of butterflies amazing? The gorgeous display of butterflies is always spectacular and it has been increasing every year. We have been planting more and more native prairie shrubs and wildflowers, Blue Sky Vineyard has dedicated acres and acres to prairie restoration, and of course, The Shawnee Hills is a breeding ground for butterflies! We are so glad you enjoyed yourselves and we look forward to having you visit again. Thank you!

My new go-to getaway

  • 5 of 5

My long-time friend and I meet once a year at a half-way point to get away and catch up. This was the perfect place. The Creole House has everything we needed and more - Ed and Nancy provided fresh eggs and pastries since we booked a four night stay. Loved being able to walk to the Blue Sky winery. Had a special show from hundreds of fireflies in the early evening. Lots of area nature attractions and of course, the wineries. We biked Tunnel Hill - worth doing! I plan to return with my husband!

Owner's Response: The Creole House in Southern Illinois certainly is a perfect middle point for many of our guests to meet, relax, and enjoy the wine trail. Oh the lucky ones that get that window of time when the fireflies put on their early summer show. Since The Creole House sits so high on the ridge and has that great wrap around porch, you have a fantastic platform to watch the fireflies rise from the grasses. Quite a show! Thank you for staying with us, for the lovely review, and we hope to see you again next year!

Perfect for what we needed!

  • 5 of 5

Stressful jobs had us searching for ways to chill. Hikes in the state parks or national forest, wine-tasting at several wineries.....oh, and the hot tub! Perfect for what we needed. Ed and Nancy's place was awesome for what we were looking for. The dozen eggs and Danish were a sweet touch and the house itself was great. As a bonus, no Wi-Fi so I wasn't at all tempted to look at all of those emails or work situations. Thanks for that! And we loved the little towns like Cobden and Alto very different than the big city!

great getaway!

  • 5 of 5

The wife and I don't get to go away very often, but when we do we plan to have fun with high expectations. Ed and Nancy did not disappoint. Creole house is definitely a fine place to call home for a spell. Clean with all the little things taken care of. we will be returning to try the other cabins also.

Owner's Response: We are very glad you were able to grab a couple of days and spend some time at the Creole House. The weather turned out pretty decent for your February weekend. We actually took a break ourselves and went hiking by Draper's Bluff. Beautiful! Thank you and we do hope to see you back at any of our places!

Perfect Holiday Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

A few times per year, my husband and I like to find a luxurious cabin where we can unwind, unplug, and relax. Creole house was absolutely that and more! The hot tub was clean and absolutely lovely. Nearby wineries are a must--they are each very unique and fun. Ed and Nancy generously left us farm-fresh eggs, olive oil, a little Christmas tree, and plush robes for the hot tub. They were super helpful, too, letting us know where to find hidden waterfalls and amazing trails. I highly recommend this retreat!

Owner's Response: You are so right. Each winery on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail has its own unique ambiance. The wine trail is also racking up national awards for some very good wines. Hope you are enjoying the olive oil as much as we do. The olive oil we left as a little Christmas treat is made by Blue Sky Vineyard and we have a bottle of it sitting next to our salt and pepper. Never go without it. Thank you so much and we look forward to seeing you again!
