About the property

Cozy House In Large Private Meadow In The Woods; Minutes From Coastal Sand Dunes

Through a generation, this house has hosted family thanksgivings, romantic retreats, and writing sabbaticals. It's been home base for kids frolicking in the meadow and on the dunes, for peaceful walks, serene canoe trips, and rugged mountain bike adventures.

About the house:

Set in a private meadow surrounded by tall pines, featuring a large eat-in kitchen and timber-framed living room that is both spacious and cozy, the house feels as comfortable for an individual on a personal retreat, as it does for two families of 4 with young children.

Upstairs offers ample space to work or play, to kick back at the entertainment center, or to curl up and read a book in a window-seat. Downstairs you can relax in the living-room or kitchen and watch hummingbirds hover and the occasional deer wander through the meadow outside.

About the area:

A five minute walk on a private path will take you from the house to a secluded area of sand dunes (with no ATVs and plenty of space for children to play). Walk across the dunes (another 20 minutes) to a miles-long stretch of sandy coastline rarely visited by others.

A five minute drive brings you to the heart of the spectacular MacKerricher State Park, where you can hike the grassy headlands over dramatic cliffs; relax on the beach; watch birds on Lake Cleone; or take a stroll on the boardwalk past the tidepools to view seals sunbathing on rocks and whales migrating in the distance.

Just ten minutes south of the house is the town of Fort Bragg, with its many restaurants, grocery stores, art galleries, and more.

Scenic rivers, short walks and longer hikes, mountain biking, horseback-riding, and many magnificent beaches are all nearby.

Detailed Sleeping Arrangement Options:

The flexible room layout maximizes sleeping options. The first-floor bedroom has a queen bed and is across the hall from a bathroom with bathtub. The fireplace room on the first floor can also be used as a bedroom with a full-sized foam mat available.

Two large upstairs bedrooms share a common hall and bathroom (with tub and shower). One bedroom is split with a divider into a sleeping area with a full bed, and an entertainment area, which includes a love-seat and a futon that folds out to a full bed. The other bedroom has a bunk-bed as well as a day-bed with trundle.

Amazing cabin!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 7 had an excellent time in the cabin. we found it very comfortable, cozy, well stocked and full of games and puzzles that the kids really enjoyed. Location is perfect. Lot's of great hiking within 25 min of the cabin, in addition to the possibility of walking to the dunes and hiking along the ocean all the way to Fort Bragg.

Lovely

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay here! There is very little internet, but we enjoyed being unplugged. There is a nice variety of movies, however (adults watched North by Northwest, kids enjoyed The Lego Movie). There were plenty of games to play (I taught the big kids to play chess). The kitchen had everything we needed and the owners were quick to respond. The house was clean and well cared for. It felt like a vacation home we would like to have in the future.

The outdoors were WONDERFUL. We enjoyed our time at the sand dunes and near the ocean. The kids loved the walk to the dunes and the ocean. We spent a whole day just playing in and around the house.

It was a little difficult to find in the dark, but the instructions from the owners were clear and easy to follow. The book in the house about the area was well thought out and explains the area very well (including local attractions and grocery store). There is a home phone available for local calls (which we needed because of quick urgent care trip), but our cell phones did not work.

Wonderful little place near the beach

  • 5 of 5

Great place to stay. There's a lot of room for sleeping. Very cozy and quiet. We stayed for Christmas in memory of our grandfather who passed in November. This was the perfect way for our family to get together for the holidays and honor him. The owners were very nice and accommodating.

Great family retreat

  • 4 of 5

We have stayed here twice SO FAR and plan on returning whenever we are able to break away from our jobs. We love the true disconnect from the outside world, while having more than comfortable surroundings, you don't feel like you're missing a thing. Like going back to 1995 (technology wise)! Able to genuinely unplug. Plenty of room for the kids to run and play, and not need to worry wqhere they are every second. We finished puzzles, read books, played cards, even planned and pulled off an awesome Pirate Treasure hunt - thru the woods and to the dunes to find the buried treasure! Can't wait till next time.

Lovely secluded location with great beach access, but several deficiencies

  • 3 of 5

This home is in a delightful, secluded location, but we were a bit dismayed to find the kitchen lacking some essentials that we would have expected. For example, we had to go out to buy paper towels and aluminum foil because these items were not provided for our stay. Also, some towels hanging in the bathroom appeared less than clean when we arrived... We were also surprised to find there was no outdoor grilling equipment, something we would typically expect in a vacation rental; other cookware in the kitchen was less than optimal. So if you're a foodie, beware.

Finally, we were unhappy that we had to contact the owner to get our damage deposit refunded, and this didn't occur until more than three weeks following our stay.

awesome place to relax

  • 5 of 5

This place was perfect for our family. The walk to the dunes and the beach was fun and exhausting. The Pacific was cold and rough but we enjoyed it anyway. The house was very clean and everything that we needed was provided. The Town of Fort Bragg is very cute with lots of fun little shops to explore. If we ever decide to head west again we will for sure book this house again.
