'I bought a small house and garden in Pacific Grove...' (John Steinbeck: A Life in Letters). John Steinbeck wrote these words to a friend about this charming house he called home in the 1940s.
This cottage was featured in Country Living's article "You'll Never Guess Which Classic American Author's Cottage is For Rent."
This cottage has a unique and rich literary history, having belonged to John Steinbeck in the early 1940's. It has been renovated to pay homage to the period and history of the property.
This darling home, known as The Steinbeck Cottage, has a beautiful living room with a tent cathedral ceiling. It's focal point is the fireplace, richly adorned with carvings of birds and flowers. It has a queen sleeper sofa, a love seat, two reading chairs and a flatscreen TV.
There is a large bedroom, accommodating a queen bed, a sitting area with a twin sleeper sofa, flat screen TV and a cozy electric fireplace. There is a fully stocked kitchen with everything you need to create great meals. The dining room has a farm table and is surrounded by floor to ceiling picture windows, overlooking the garden and offering peaks of the bay. The beautiful bathroom features white subway tiles in the shower and blue Moroccan lantern tiles on the floor. The front yard offers an outdoor sitting area with a fire pit for conversation and warmth. The cottage has cable TV, a DVD player and wireless internet.
The cottage is approximately 900 square feet. It is original architecture from the 1920’s and has short doorways throughout the cottage. Taller guests will need to mind their heads when passing through the rooms.

Interaction with Guests
While The Steinbeck Cottage is one of the three cottages on the property, it offers plenty of privacy and a dedicated outdoor area.

Pacific Grove has been called “Butterfly Town U.S.A.,” “The Most Romantic City in the U.S.,” “A Dreamy California Destination, ” as well as an idyllic place to get married, to honeymoon or to just hang out. Some of it is self-proclaimed, some the acclaim of people who have actually visited Pacific Grove.
You will find Pacific Grove on the very tip of the scenic, tree-shrouded Monterey Peninsula with a rocky coastline and an ambiance of charm, grace and beauty.
Founded in the 1870s as a Methodist summer retreat, Pacific Grove still bears the look and feel of yesteryear. As you stroll the residential streets admiring the charm of home after home, you will notice little plaques on many of the homes that bear the name of the original owner and the year in which it was built. To qualify for a plaque from the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove, a structure must look like it did when it was originally built.
Among its visitors are brightly colored orange-and-black Monarch butterflies, who overwinter in Pacific Grove after traveling up to 2,000 miles, arriving by the thousands starting in October, peaking around Christmas and departing by March.
Besides its scenic beauty and idyllic neighborhoods, Pacific Grove offers an eclectic downtown experience, with small boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, antique stores and more. Other vibrant shopping areas are along Central Avenue at the entrance to Pacific Grove from Cannery Row and at the top of Forest Avenue on Forest Hill.
The Steinbeck Cottage is centrally located and a short walk from many scenic destinations. It is located a half mile from The Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row, as well as downtown Pacific Grove. Lover's Point beach is just one mile away and downtown Monterey is two miles away.
There are many fantastic restaurants, activities and shops in the area.

We are Kevin and Vicky. It’s nice to meet you! Here’s a little bit about us…
This is Kevin. I was born in San Francisco, lived in Ireland when I was young, but San Jose has been home for most of my life. I’m an avid reader, enjoy writing, and I love history.
This is Vicky. I was born in Vietnam and I immigrated to the US with my family when I was 2 years old. I work in high-tech, love baking and traveling, and can be found at the gym regularly.
Together, we love exploring new things. Whether it’s new foods, places to visit or experiences, we love the adventure of life. Most of all, we love time with each other, our kids, family and friends.
Kevin & Vicky Delaney purchased this house in 2012
Pacific Grove is a charming town with wonderful restaurants, a beautiful coastline and the historic Cannery Row. And there’s plenty to do – sailing, whale watching, hiking, kayaking, cycling, and wonderful coastline pathways to stroll between the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Lover’s Point. Pacific Grove also has the historic literary appeal of being the home of John Steinbeck, American author and Pulitzer Prize winner.
Besides being charming and beautiful, the cottages are distinctly unique having once been the home of author John Steinbeck. There is a rich and wonderful history to these 100-year-old cottages.
When Steinbeck resided here he formulated the plot of The Grapes of Wrath, and wrote several books including The Sea of Cortez. This is the home he shared with his second wife, Gwyn Conger, who would become the inspiration for the lead antagonist, Kate Trask, in his epic novel, East of Eden. In a letter to a friend, Steinbeck wrote of the cottages, “It is a pleasant little house, and we miss it… You’ll find you get a lot of thinking done in that house.” ' (from John Steinbeck, A Life in Letters).
We are excited to share this wonderful piece of history with you and know you will enjoy your stay.
This quaint little cottage was a perfect place to relax and unwind after exploring. The fire was nice and warm and the beds were very comfortable
This cottage is a very special place, and Kevin and Vicky give it the care and attention it deserves. They pay attention to all the details--including the provision of ample supplies--that make their guests' stay as good as it can possibly be. We have stayed at many rental properties on our travels, and they are a cut above the rest among hosts and hostesses. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay and relax at the tail end of our California vacation. Not only is the service great and the cottage charming and well-kept, but it is located an easy walk from the aquarium, the bay, Cannery Row, several nice restaurants, a grocery and a liquor store. We would recommend this spot to anybody, and, if we ever go to this area again, we would want to stay there again. Thanks so much.
The Steinbeck cottage is the perfect place to stay in Monterrey. It is beautiful, cozy, comfortable, and conveniently located. It's within driving distance of anywhere you'd want to go - or walking distance if you don't mind hills! We never had any problem finding parking in front of the cottage. The owners were very friendly on the few times we interacted with them. If we ever come back to Monterrey, we plan on staying here again.
I stayed in the Steinbeck Cottage with two of my girlfriends who had never been to the Monterey area. It was such a cute little house that is in a perfect location. We were able to walk to breakfast and dinner, and take short drive to Point Lobos. The fireplace in the living room was my favorite part. We used it both days of our trip. We were looking forward to using the fire pit, but it was raining most of the time we were there, so we didn't get to. We'll have to come back. There is a Nob Hill foods, Safeway, Trader Joe's and 7-11 all nearby, making food/drink shopping convenient.
Kevin and Vicky were super helpful, welcoming and responsive before, during and after our stay. I would love to see the other two houses on the property. I can only imagine they were just as adorable. I would definitely stay here again if I need a place to stay in Monterey. Thanks for having us!
We stayed four nights (Oct 17-21) at the cottage and had a wonderful time. The weather couldn't have been nicer. Warm and sunny. The sofa bed in the living room sounds like a whoopee cushion when you sit on it and its not any quieter when its made into a bed. We loved the fireplace and the outdoor seating areas. The kitchen is easy to work in and has plenty of everything you need. It was a joy to sit in the dining room with all of the windows and views to the outside. We could hear sea lions barking while eating breakfast. I would rent the cottage again.
Our stay in this sweet cottage was one of our best experiences with VRBO. The entire home was cozy, clean, and outfitted with everything we needed. Comfy blankets were in every room for lounging, watching movies (a great selection was on the shelf), reading (Steinbeck and others were in the den), and napping. We will definitely stay here in future visits to the area. The house is walking distance to the aquarium and Cannery Row. An ideal location in a quiet neighborhood with a view of the Bay.
Pacific Grove offers an unparalleled quality of life. Sharing borders with the Monterey Bay, City of Monterey, Pacific Ocean, and the Del Monte Forest, our town offers breathtaking views and recreational activities. The City provides services to the community including: excellent fire, emergency, and ocean rescue services; an award-winning natural history museum; the lowest crime rate of any city in Monterey County; a nationally-recognized 18-hole golf course; a monarch butterfly habitat sanctuary; sandy beaches; and, the oldest continuously-operating lighthouse on the west coast. We are known for our small-town hospitality and friendliness in a place we simply call 'P.G.' (from The City of Pacific Grove website)
