About this property
Luxury Lake Cabin by New River Trail w/ Dock/Canoes/Steam Room/Fireplaces...
This mountain lake retreat is where people come to relax, connect and get away from it all. Surrounded by nature and adventure... Lost Horizon has been a honeymoon retreat, family celebration destination, girlfriend getaway and fishing/biking hideout for lovers of the outdoors. Hikers, bikers and cross country skiers love the 57 mile New River Trail within walking distance of Lost Horizon. If you like watching birds, deer and a forest full of other animals... have a seat on one of the porches or decks at Lost Horizon – and don’t forget your camera.
Join them, or watch fishermen along the shoreline from your private hideaway above the lake. Go down to the spacious deck for a day in the sun or cook-out on the lake, feed the ducks, or fish from the dock. You’ll have a fire pit right on the lake for roasting marshmallows. Play a game of horseshoes and swing on the rope swing. Two Canoes, oars & life jackets are provided for your exclusive use; bring floats or boats for more fun on the water.
Don’t miss sunrise & sunsets over the water... they are magnificent! Thunderstorms are even wonderful here! Listen to the rain pounding on the tin roof during a downpour from the covered porch, or cozy up in the cool autumn nights surrounded by the fall foliage; listen to the silence of a snowfall in the mountains. Build a fire or light the gas logs in either fireplace and cozy up to relax into the warm surroundings.
Lost Horizon sleeps up to eight people. The top floor includes a bedroom suite; comfortable full futon sofa; private back deck above the pond, woods & flower gardens; shelves full of books and a cozy sitting area overlooking the main floor. The private master suite is charmingly intimate on the main floor where you find a fully-equipped kitchen, bar seating, small dining table, living room with a gas fireplace and bathroom with old fashioned claw-foot soaker tub.
Downstairs you have a large steam room/shower with benches (and 6 different shower heads), a bar, comfortable wrap around sofa & full futon. French doors lead out to the patio with a hanging swing overlooking the lake.
A few hidden treasures at Lost Horizon: Enjoy a library of DVDs & books (including “Lost Horizon”). There are family games and a guest book to share your experiences & read about the adventures of those before you. Sunsets from the deck or down at the dock will take your breath away. Lean back in the deck chairs & look up; you are likely to see eagles flying high above the trees in the daytime, and stars are brilliant on clear nights at Lost Horizon.

The views are surreal. It’s like a new painting every morning and evening. Ver secluded which was awesome. Driveway is definitely steep. Make sure you have all-wheel or 4 wheel drive. I will definitely book this place again.
Lovely home with all the amenities you could ask for. Well stocked kitchen, nicely decorated home with excellent views. Quite area, great place to disconnect.
Loved the view and the property. There was no wifi though. We contacted the owner about it and didn't get a response. It didn't spoil our weekend. We still had a great time.
A very nice house to stay for the weekend, it was clean and had a wonderful view. Walking down to the river was not bad but I would recommend the host really fix up a trail/path down that hill. Kayaks were nice to use, fishing was fun, hot tub worked great, beds were comfy, couches were comfy, house was awesome!

Thank you for enjoying all that Lost Horizon has to offer! We are working on the trail through the woods... though most guests say they prefer to take their vehicles full of supplies to the lakefront.
I love that you took the path less traveled.
Our family had a wonderful time at the cabin. The view from the house is phenomenal - watching the sun set behind the mountains and lake was idyllic. The house was clean and welcoming, we felt right at home. We hope to be back again!
My young family (3 kids under 6) greatly enjoyed this beautiful cabin, amazing views from the deck, koi pond, fishing at the docks, and tons of wildlife. It was such a relaxing, secluded, and peaceful place!
Cabin was very quaint and nice. Views and outside area just great! I feel property should not be advertised as having any access to the river. The dock area was in needof repair and shelter falling down. Very difficult to walk down and I would not get in the water near the area. Suggesting is was a bonus to the property turned out to be a negative. We went to Claytor Lake Beach.

Thank you for choosing Lost Horizon Cabin after the hurricane damage. It took a few weeks to recover from the hurricane, but we have repaired, stained, & upgraded the dock and deck on the lakefront & it has a gazebo addition, new deck furniture, canoe & kayak racks, grill, fire pit, and parking area.
We really enjoyed staying at Lost Horizon. It was perfect for our time together as a family. The house was awesome and we loved it. The setting is the best. We really enjoyed going down to the dock and taking the canoe out several times. It was the perfect getaway for family time.
This was an absolutely amazing trip! The views were wonderful and the home was fantastic. The attention to every detail was great. Very clean and nothing was overlooked - even the fall decorations were PERFECT. Debbie was great to connect with - Thank you for sharing your lovely home, we will definitely be back again to enjoy the New River Trail and the lake area more!

Beautiful, relaxing place - wish we could stay longer
Beautiful cabin with great views. Well kept and owner thought of many things that made it easy to enjoy. Had trouble getting access to canoes at dock but owner responded quickly so even with our short stay, we could use canoes before we left. Will look forward to coming back.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this wonderful review. I'm so happy you enjoyed your stay, and we're looking forward to sharing Lost Horizon with you again soon!
Sincerely,
Debbie
We love Lost Horizon! This was our 3rd time staying here and the cabin is just perfect. We used the fire pit to roast S’mores, and the charcoal grill for burgers & hot dogs! The kayak and canoe got a lot of use and we brought our fishing polls to fish off the dock!

Even though you're not a Hokie fan, we were happy to have you! ha ha
So glad you enjoyed your stay at Lost Horizon, and welcome you back for the next game and/or fishing trip, romantic getaway, family time....
Our family had a great time at Chestnut Springs! The view from the house was amazing. The water access was very nice, we enjoyed the kayaks. The location is very close to the New River Trail, we biked each day and returned to the dock for a picnic lunch. I appreciate the owner sharing such a wonderful home for others to enjoy. Look forward to returning!
We had a great 3 night visit in October. The cabin is lovely, especially the wonderful river views. We enjoyed a lot of time outside on the deck, hiked a bit of the New River Trail, played a round of golf in Redford and visited The Draper Mercantile. We went down to the river and tried out the kayaks too. It was relaxing and fun.

About the host
Hosted by Debbie Seagle Owner/Property Manager
Debbie, the owner, grew up in the New River Valley, and after living all over the world, came back to the most beautiful place she knew of, The New River Valley, to build the cabin as a family getaway from a hectic lifestyle in DC. It was hard to leave again once Lost Horizon was built, so she focused on landscaping around the cabin & on the lakefront, writing, organizing events, enjoying friends & family and producing air shows. Debbie is a published writer and photographer/videographer in newspapers, magazines and TV throughout the US. She flew around the country with Greg Poe Airshows promoting his sponsor and shooting air-to-air photography for a few years; now, as the owner of Always Eventful, LLC – events company is now back to doing what she does best… planning celebrations & watching guests have fun. The cabin is a full time vacation property because Debbie likes sharing the joy (and it helps pay the mortgage). With a flair for making events personal and unique, Debbie has earned the reputation from Hawaii to Europe to the Middle East as the person who can make good things happen in any environment, under any circumstances… In any Event - It will be Always Eventful! (Get it? Like Always Eventful, LLC).
Why they chose this property
The bottom line is written on a sign from her son that hangs above the downstairs fireplace “Family is everything.” Anyone who has been to the cabin has to agree that nothing is better than being at Lost Horizon with a cozy fire in that fireplace or eating on the deck surrounded by fall foliage reflecting on the water, maybe snowed in, or pushing your big brother off the dock then jumping into the canoe to paddle away... Lost Horizon is a place where family and friends gather, people come to celebrate or be alone, find romance or start a new chapter. Lost Horizon is where memories are made.
What makes this property unique
Lost Horizon’s name is inspired from a 1933 novel by English writer James Hilton. It is best remembered as the origin of Shangri-La, a fictional utopian lamasery high in the mountains of Tibet. President Franklin D. Roosevelt named the Presidential hideaway in Maryland after Shangri-La. (It has since been renamed Camp David.) The novel is said to be a loose basis for the film Star Trek: Insurrection.
In the novel, and at Claytor Lake, Lost Horizon is where one finds inner peace, love, and a sense of purpose and whose inhabitants enjoy unheard-of longevity and a true sense of utopia.
Utopia was a name coined by Sir Thomas More meaning 'no where' in Greek. But you will find that ideal places can and do exist. They may only be forgotten or lost lands which you have found. May you find your utopia at Lost Horizon.
