If you are looking for a place to relax while surrounded with the sights and sounds of nature, stay in Fireflies. The cabin is located along the New River waterfront across from the 57-mile New River Trail State Park. The cabin rests 200 feet from the water not far from a bend in the river. You can watch the sun come up over the mountain and the mist rise above the river while sitting on one of Fireflies’ two porches. The New River is 350 million years old and retains the pristine beauty of an unspoiled waterway. Enjoy canoeing, tubing, kayaking, hiking, biking, horseback riding, or fishing from our floating dock. If you would like dining and entertainment options, Fireflies sits midway between Wytheville and Christainsburg with both cities just 35 minutes away. Located within 45 minutes of 3 wineries.

Why the Owner Chose Barren Springs: : We are originally from New Jersey. While vacationing in the New River Valley in 2004 we fell in love with the area. We purchased property on the river in 2005. As this was our second home we rented it as a vacation rental for 3 years before our retirement. In 2009 we moved into our home and began to build a small cabin on the property close to the river. The cabin, which we call Fireflies, is now ready to be enjoyed by vacationers looking for a place to relax.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin: : Year Purchased: 2010 - The cabin sits just above the riverbank and has large windows and two porches that have been designed to enable you to enjoy the abundance of nature. It is common place to see the deer in the early morning and again in the evening. Water birds of many varieties fly up and down the river each day and it is not unusual to see a bald eagle.

Owner Description/Comments:: This property is owned by Bill and Kathie Conaway both of whom are retired. Bill and his father spent the last year building the cabin.

About Kathie Conaway

We retired to the New River Valley in 2008 having lived in the southern portion of New Jersey. Kathie was an elementary school principal and Bill ran a small contracting business.

Kathie Conaway purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Kathie Conaway chose Virginia

Bill and his father built the cabin in 2009. The cabin was designed and furnished with our future guests in mind. Our aim has always been to make our guests' stay relaxing. We make every effort to make Fireflies Cabin your home away from home.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin has been designed and located on the property in such a way that you feel like you are far 'away from it all' while being only 5 miles from Interstate 81 and 800 feet off of route 100 (Wysor Highway). Our very own floating dock sits on the river in front of the cabin. It is great for fishing and swimming.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for the gorgeous accommodations! We had a lovely stay here during our daughter's graduation and only regret that we never found this little piece of heaven before! The word "cabin" is truly unfair to your beautiful little home! We will definitely be back! PS. the pumpkin muffins were awesome!

Fireflies on the New River

  • 5 of 5

One of the most relaxing weeks of my life! I only live twenty-five minutes from this hidden treasure on the New River and I still felt as though I was away from it all. I saw things in "my own backyard" that I had only heard about but never took the time to see. The cabin lived up to all the wonderful reviews. You certainly get your moneys worth and then some. The owners are so sweet to provide fresh eggs and muffins. They have thought of everything - this cabin is as well stocked as my own home. Visit this lovely place - you won't regret it!

Peaceful and Serene

  • 5 of 5

Thanks Bill and Kathie for providing such a nice little house in a most beautiful and peaceful spot on the New River. This house had everything needed for a comfortable stay including the owners who were so nice. All the special touches meant a lot. Fresh eggs, muffins and chocolates! The house was immaculate and stocked with plenty of everything. Comfortable living room furniture and bed were a plus. Plenty of books to read. Lots of lighting and big windows facing the river to enjoy the view.

They have a nice horseshoe pit down below, also a fire pit, wood and a table with benches right at river's edge. One note to keep in mind is this house sits high up on a hill overlooking a huge grass yard going down to the river. It may be difficult for some people to maneuver both the hill and also the ramp down to the dock. Bill said we could drive our car down so just ask.

In the surrounding area, driving the country roads were old homesteads, cattle farms and there were deer everywhere at both dawn and dusk. Even a doe with twin fawns surprised us early one morning on Reed Creek Road. They feed right along the winding roads so drive slowly.

Sitting on the dock by the river was relaxing and beautiful. Even though we caught no fish they jumped and splashed around us each day laughing. Max your dog greeted us often coming and going up the long drive. The birds entertained us in the trees around the house with their songs each morning. Coming from the Florida Keys and our very hot summer weather we got to enjoy open windows and a cool breeze all night. Coffee on the back porch looking down the hill to the calm New River was my favorite part. Thanks So Much For A Truly Special Relaxing Spot! Becky and Martin Bruno, Marathon, Florida

Beautiful cabin, totally stocked, nice touches!

  • 5 of 5

Fireflies served as a perfect homebase for us for a week of biking, kayaking, and relaxing back at the cabin. The kitchen was totally stocked and we also used the fire pit for a couple of fireside meals and smores. The cabin is in a beautiful setting and is in a very convenient location. This is one of the best rentals that we've experienced.

Great Stay

  • 5 of 5

Very relaxing weekend. Great view of the river from the cabin. Very nicely furnished and well maintained. The kitchen is fully stocked. Bill and Kathie were great and went out of their way to make sure the stay was fantastic. We were met by Patrick(their dog) who was very welcoming. Even though the Conoway's house was just up the driveway, we felt as though we had the entire place to ourselves. Their are a couple of small country stores/gas stations within a mile or so should you need something when you get there. There is also a place up river that you can rent canoes, tubes, or kayaks where they drop you off and arrange pickup down river to transport you back. Fishing from the private dock was nice as well. We will absolutely stay again.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Everything was perfect with this place. We all enjoyed ourselves especially Vegas, the dog. The only thing that could have made our trip better, would be a few more mornings sitting on the back porch with a cup of coffee while enjoying the cool mountain air and the perfectly quiet surroundings. The cabin was clean and in pristine condition. It was very well appointed and lacked nothing in total comfort. Highly recommend it for a couple or small family as an excellent location to get away from it all without sacrificing any creature comforts.
