About the property

Charming Brick Carriage House With Elegant Private Garden

Please also see our other 2 bedroom cottages (BLUE COTTAGE -- VRBO #464919, GREEN COTTAGE -- VRBO #479274

Constructed in 1856 as a stable serving a large estate owned by prominent merchant and blockade runner Edward Trenholm (brother to George Trenholm -- Treasurer to the Confederacy and fabled Rhett Butler), GIBBON HOUSE has been beautifully restored today as an elegant home.

Designed by classical architect Randolph Martz, the carriage house was carefully restored and maintains the story hidden in its preserved patina.

The house is comfortably furnished and the bedrooms are each equipped with queen beds and luxury linens. The large arched French doors provide fabulous views of the garden.

Tucked off the street in a private setting with off-street parking, enjoy the patio, grill and outside seating. The garden is the perfect place to relax, unwind and enjoy.

As with much of Charleston, this property has a storied past. It was later purchased in 1888 from Eliza Trenholm by Mary Gibbon whose daughter Maude Gibbon would later form the Charleston String Symphony. The stable served as the founding office for the Symphony in 1919. Ms. Gibbon successfully recruited internationally renowned artists including Spanish cellist Pablo Casals who stayed in the main residence. It all began in this humble brick structure and through the might of a very determined lady, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra would become a testament to her life's work and an ever present cornerstone of the Charleston arts community.

Located in desirable Harleston Village in the heart of downtown Charleston, GIBBON HOUSE and garden encompass an elegant charm. The neighborhood is extremely walkable and surrounded by some of Charleston's most impressive architecture. It is a perfect place for a romantic getaway, family trip, wedding party, reunion, or whatever adventure brings you to Charleston.

Fine dining, art galleries, high end boutiques and retail stores, Colonial Lake, Marion Square with its weekend Farmer's Market, dog park, the Battery, Rainbow Row, and antique shopping…all just blocks away.

Enjoy your time in Charleston as a local in your own exquisite private home and garden.

We require a two night minimum stay Monday-Wednesday and a three night minimum stay Thursday-Sunday. Events are not allowed on the property.

Very cool historic home with perfect location!

  • 4 of 5

My husband and 2 college aged kids stayed here for 3 days over Thanksgiving and never had to use our car. We walked everywhere. The carriage house is very charming as much of the original house is still visible...lots of brick walls and wood beams. Cozy beds and furniture. The kitchen is stocked with plenty of dishes/ utencils including fresh coffee ( no dishwasher), but its not needed as the restaurants are half the reason to come to Charleston.

Probably the only reason I didn't give this 5 stars are just little things: the bathroom doors don't have locks or door knobs, some of the upstairs curtains were paper but they still worked and although we love dogs, they never picked up the dog poop in our yard.

Would I stay again and recommend this place?

Absolutely YES!

I just think its good to know the few things that could be improved.

Remember it's a renovated historic building, so it's not going to have the feel of a modern home, but that's why we loved it! My family thought it was very cool and we loved being greeted by their dog. It was comfortable and warm and much more fun than staying in a condo.

Its pricey over the holidays but very charming!

So yes, rent it!!

Great piece of history

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights. Myself, wife and 3yo son. He really enjoyed the space the unit offered. It is actually larger than it appears in the pictures. Decent walk to the city market, but it is full of wonder architecture. A Uber home was $6 from there. Took us a while to figure out the tv (the box is in the closet behind the tv so the remote would not function through the wall) Would recommend!

A different experience than most.

  • 2 of 5

I have waited to write this review. I wanted to make sure I felt the same way two weeks after staying here and as it turns out I do. My husband and I live in South Carolina. My husband is a graduate of MUSC and very familiar with the Charleston area. We stayed at the carriage house the weekend of our wedding. We were getting married at Boone Hall Plantation and wanted to have a genuine Charleston experience. The carriage house seemed perfect for this, not to mention the beautiful courtyard for wedding photography! The house is everything the pictures portray and more. It is beautiful.

Herein lies the problem:

1) There is dog poop EVERYWHERE. They do not even ATTEMPT to clean it up. They let their dog run freely everywhere. Every time I went to my car there was dog poop I was trying to avoid. Fast forward to my wedding day. We tried to take pictures in the courtyard area. I had dog poop all over my wedding shoes and my photographers got it all over them as well. All of the reviews thus far have yet to mention this. I can only assume the owners just did not feel like being on pooper-scooper duty this particular weekend, I'm not sure. For the amount paid they should clean up after their dog.

2) There is only one driveway for the main house and the carriage house. The day of my wedding the owner blocked the driveway with his large Mercedes SUV. I feel this was done intentionally as he knew it was my wedding day and did not want unwelcome cars in his driveway. The problem is I could not get out to attend my own wedding. We knocked on every door of the house, no response. I finally called them and they exited from the house to move the vehicle. They had been there the whole time and chose not to come to the door. This was an irritating part of the trip obviously. The larger issue here though is safety. What if I had needed to leave because of an emergency? Blocking someone in a driveway is a huge safety hazard. No apology was ever offered.

Bottom line: We paid a premium for a two night stay to step in dog poop every time we walked outside and get blocked into a house instead of being able to easily exit to our wedding. Spend your money elsewhere. Stay somewhere like The Bohemian (Downtown Charleston) or The Sanctuary (Kiawah Island). They offer the same destination locations, more modern amenities, no dog poop to step in, and definitely no safety hazards.

Owner's Response: We are so sorry to hear this. We take great pride in the Carriage House's garden and ensuing grounds both of which frequently receive admiration and praise. There is no excuse for dog poop, and we are extremely sorry to hear that it was not picked up. You are correct that this is not typical as we are very conscientious about keeping the gardens and grounds clean and well maintained. Regarding the car, there was absolutely no intention of blocking you. The driveway that leads to the parking area affords operable parking for the main house and carriage house. The car was parked temporarily in front of the main house as we were unloading items and knew that it would take less than 15 minutes. If you knocked on the door, we did not hear you, but as soon as you called, we removed the car immediately. We apologize for this and respectfully disagree on your safety concern. Again, we are very sorry to hear about your experience. It brings us great joy to share the carriage house with the VRBO community and we always love reading our guests' feedback. We consistently receive 5 star reviews here as well as handwritten notes in the guest book, and are disheartened to read that your stay was less than perfect.

A very charming and comfortable place for two couples to stay!

  • 5 of 5

This is a well located and beautiful property with all the nicest amenities for a comfortable stay. We brought our Swedish friends and as two couples, this two bedroom carriage house was perfect. Each of us is very pleased and the dog was the additional joy to make this place feel especially fun. Thank you for all the care in designing this accommodation!!

OLD WORLD CHARMER/DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS

  • 5 of 5

IF YOU LIKE OLD WORLD CHARM, YOU'LL LOVE THIS WELL APPOINTED CARRIAGE HOUSE. PERFECTLY LOCATED ABOUT 4-5 BLOCKS OFF OF KING STREET, IT FEATURES A BEAUTIFUL COURTYARD WITH SEATING THAT IS A PERFECT SETTING FOR A NICE GLASS OF WINE OR A "SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED", MARTINI. IF YOU'RE A FAN OF WHITEWASHED BRICK AND WOODEN BEAMS, CIRCA 1800'S, THIS IS A DREAM SPOT. THIS WAS A WONDERFUL BASE FOR A FAMILY GATHERING OVER LABOR DAY, AND WHEN THIS INCREDIBLE DESTINATION AND ALL OF IT'S ALLURE CALL ME BACK , I MOST CERTAINLY WILL BE LOOKING TO RENT THIS HOME AGAIN. THANKS STEPHENSON, I SO APPRECIATED THE SOUTHERN CHARM AND HOSPITALITY. GENE
