About Barry Gurney

Northern transplants living the dream at the beautiful sandy coast of North Carolina. My wife and I fell in love with Emerald Isle the first time we visited here in 1992. After that it was only a matter of time before we moved. We brought our children up here in such a friendly and wonderful place it's hard to imagine ever living anywhere else. We could not be more blessed.

Why Barry Gurney chose Emerald Isle

Cozy home with great views and well-stocked kitchen

  • 5 of 5

My family of 3 (well, 4 if you include the pooch) took this trip to visit my sister and her family and to take my grandparents to the beach. Due to some last-minute changes for grandparents, they were unable to make the trip due to illness, but I'm sure my grandfather would have loved the incredible views, porch rocking chairs, and the few steps right to the beach. There are some stairs to get in the house and a few to get down to the beach, but they would have been totally manageable for him.

The kitchen was well-stocked, and we made every single meal at home except for dinner on the last night. I think a veggie peeler and knife sharpener are the only things that could make it better. We brought our own, along with a food processor and rice cooker, and we were more than ready to make some tasty chow! We also brought our own knives and sharpener out of habit, but I was still pleased with the variety of utensils and knives provided.

The beds were fantastically comfortable with PLENTY of pillows, and I really loved waking up to see the sunrise over the ocean from the master bedroom each morning. The house was cozy, but even though the the cold weather kept us inside most of the time and the fact that we had 4 grown ups, two small dogs, a ten year old kid, and a 6-month-old baby, we didn't feel cramped.

I loved the thoughtfulness of provided dog amenities, and I think my doggo is going to sleep for a week now that we're back home. She loved playing frisbee on the beach every morning. As I mentioned before, the weather was QUITE cold, but that meant almost no one on the beach and the entire town was very quiet and peaceful.

The Bogue Pier was really great to visit, and we even spent one (incredibly, awfully cold and windy) day fishing (we brought our own gear) and caught a few rays.

There areTVs in every room, but if you bring your own game system, you will be limited to hook up in the living room or master because the other two bedrooms have older televisions. We never even used those, anyway! I was glad to hook up our Xbox for the kiddo to have a small break each day while the grown ups had some wine and made dinner, but if the weather had been warmer, I don't think we would have needed it.

Barry was very helpful when I had questions while we there, and he even offered to drive down to help me out if I couldn't get things worked out on my own.

Overall, it was a wonderful trip and we really enjoyed Barry's space. We will be back!

Cozy cottage right on the beach! Even with ice and snow, you can't get better than that!

This east side of a duplex was stocked with everything you would need-- cooking supplies, and plenty of extras like your own home. All you need to bring is food and clothes. We loved the location and all the extra touches.
