Why Barb or Jeff Pierce chose Black Hills

We love the Black Hills of South Dakota and fell in love with the Nemo area. Owning both an on road motorcycle and an off road side by side I enjoy spending as much time in the area as I can and owning this cabin has made enjoying the area even better.

This area has some of the greatest riding in the nation. Its also close to Sturgis and a great place to stay during the Rally or to enjoy riding in the Black Hills in the spring, summer or fall. Its an ideal location for the off road enthusiast. Miles and miles of great trails that are marked and USFS has great trail maps to aid you in your journey.

What makes this cabin unique

Great location close to so much to do, but secluded enough that you can relax and unwind if you prefer. Its centrally located in the Northern Black Hills and has a:

Hot Tub

WiFi internet

Barbecue Grill

Two Patios

Full Service Kitchen

Flat Screen TVs with Satellite

Queen Bedroom in main floor bedroom

Additional two Queen beds in the loft

Queen sleeper couch

Twin sleeper couch

LP Gas fireplace

Full Bathroom & Laundry

A Gold Nugget in the Black Hills

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time in five years that we have stayed at the Big Elk Cabin. Privacy, convenience to the attractions, and the exceptional level of maintenance, is why we will always pursue and secure this cabin for future trips to the Black Hills. It is obvious the owners care for this property and the overall experience of their guests. We did not need for a thing.... First class all the way. Thank You!

My experience at the cabin.

  • 2 of 5

Cabin was very well supplied with all advertised and modern appliances ect. Towels and kitchen plates cups utensils also. Very happy with all supplied including outdoor grill.

The hot tub water never got warm enough as found by was our experience. adjustment might have changed that as per owner.

Bed bug bite were experienced as my wife and both sister in laws got bit by the mouth and resulted in swelling and some pain after sleeping upstairs the next day. Upstairs rooms needed cleaning we experienced once there. Downstairs was fairly clean.

Furniture was nice looking and fairly new but my wife experienced iching when leaned against them (probably from previous pets allowed). Pets are allowed. Beds were very comfy and we appreciate that .

Canyon area on travel to the cabin is super to look at on a sunny day.

The gas indoor heater advertised did not work and would be a nice touch for night time but we were told it is seasonal and was not meant for our time there by the owners after we left the rental. Room electric heaters did work and warmed nicely except for living room

Our brief encounter with the owners on site was experienced and they were very friendly and are no doubt nice people.

These were my truthful and honest experiences at the cabin. The cabin is fairly new and modern in itself.

Nothing personal; just an objective real experience review.

Thanks.

Sincerely:

Owner's Response: The odd thing about this review is that when we showed up the morning they were leaving the hot tub was the only issue. The guest complimented Barb on how clean the cabin was. While cleaning the cabin she found that two of the pillows from upstairs had been taken. Having a guest checking in soon we had to drive to Rapid City to buy replacements and return again for a second time. Only after messaging them explaining why we kept a little of their deposit for the replacement pillows did any of these other "issues" suddenly come to life. They messaged back they accidentally took the pillows but wanted a refund for their stay because the hot tub was not hot enough and the LP fireplace pilot light wasn't lit yet. The hot tub is professionally checked once a week and any issues are dealt with at that time. The guest before had no issues with the hot tub and the tech didn't find anything wrong when he was there a couple days prior to his stay. Come to find out someone in his group must have changed the hot tub settings which caused the issue. The LP fireplace has lighting instructions on it. We turn it off during the summer months and usually light it in the fall. Very easy to light if its needed. The cabin also has in wall heaters in every room downstairs and upstairs there is a Duraflame 5200 BTU heater that provides heating for up to 1,000-sq ft which is about the sq ft of the whole cabin! If the living room was too cool this could have been brought downstairs and still heated the upstairs if they didn't want to light the fireplace. We have never had a single complaint about bugs or spider bites. We had a guest about 10 days before you who owns a pest extermination business who loved the cabin and made another reservation to come out again in a few days. If anyone would have noticed a problem with bugs I'd say it would be him. I will message to do a full evaluation of the cabin. Not knowing what other activities they did while enjoying the Black Hills forest its hard to say what his guests were bitten by. I find it strange if he had so many problems he would not have called. Our welcome letter has both our cell numbers and says to call with any questions or problems. If the hot tub had ended up being a mechanical problem I would have refunded something, but it was user error. It would have been easy to talk him through lighting the fireplace, and we don't live far away if we needed to come up and help. We can't fix a problem we don't know about.

Peaceful and Inspirational

  • 5 of 5

We loved this cabin. Truth is, we are spoiled. We like comfort and luxuries and good service. We romanticize about a cabin in the woods, but what we really want is to be entertained and catered to. We like TV, WiFi, Air conditioned comfort. None of that mattered when we were in this cabin. Sat TV confuses me and I decided we just didn't need it. The walks, the comfortable furnishings, the hot tub, the decks and positively peaceful serenity. That is what we absorbed this trip and it was fantastic. What we wanted for the 4th was quiet. Peace and quiet. We got it and it was a luxury I never knew we needed. Everything else came secondary , but it was all there; supplies, blue ray movies with players in every room. Mostly the wind through the tall pines. Morning or night. Soul cleansing experience. Highly recommend.
