Why Barb or Jeff Pierce chose Nemo
We love the Black Hills of South Dakota and fell in love with the Nemo area. Owning both an on road motorcycle and an off road side by side we enjoy spending as much time in the area as we can and owning this cabin has made enjoying the area even better. This area has some of the greatest riding in the nation. Its also close to Sturgis and a great place to stay during the Rally or to enjoy riding in the Black Hills in the spring, summer or fall. Its an ideal location for the off road enthusiast. Miles and miles of great trails that are marked and USFS has great trail maps to aid you in your journey.

Quiet and relaxing
Just what this busy life style called for. Cabin has everything you need and then some. 2nd time staying there and not our last. Love it!
Clean and comfortable, cozy cabin in the woods! Turkey and deer surrounded the cabin most of the time we were there. So peaceful and beautiful. We loved it!
Thank you for your review. We are so glad that you love our little piece of Heaven. We would love to have you back.
Thank you again,
Barb & Jeff
Quaint, cozy getaway
Had a wonderful time with friends! The cabin was a wonderful meeting place and it was nice that it was fully stocked, so that we didn't have to worry about what we needed to cook with etc. The hot tub was a wonderful treat!
All in all, it is a nice cabin but our first impression wasn't great. The house had been damaged over the summer and there was duck tape on the picture window, the hot tub was musty-smelling and there were lots of flies in the cabin. If the owner would have warned us about these things in advance and not after we got there, we would have appreciated it. The owner was very helpful when we had problems with the lock.
Yes, the window... We are not thrilled with the insurance for taking so long to get the window claim approved so we can get it replaced. It's a garden window (Google for an image if you are not familiar with them) and only the top piece was cracked by hail, the part you look out wasn't damaged and the view isn't affected at all. I should just cut a piece of wood and attach it to the top and people would think it's a bay window and nothing would ever be noticed. I never thought it would take so long to get approval for replacement.
The hot tub is professionally serviced on weekly basis. We've never had any complaint about the water quality or any smells. I'll make our guy aware of the comment.
As far as the flies we usually make guests aware that in the fall log cabins have a few flies in them. We contacted an exterminator years ago and was told there really isn't much he could do, it's just a log cabin thing. We were up to the cabin the night before their check in and vacuumed up the flies but I'm sure over the next few days there were a couple more dead ones here or there. But to say lots... I guess it's a relative term. I'll take their advice and add something in the welcome guide about the chance there there might be flies in the fall so guests are not surprised when they find them during their stay.
On the second day of their stay I received a call from the guest on her cell phone that they couldn't get into the cabin. I reminded her what the code was and she was insistent that she had been using the correct code so I told her I was on the way to the cabin. So I left work and headed up to the cabin to troubleshoot the problem. When I got there the guests were in the cabin and all was well. When I got home I looked on the computer where I can see all door activity. The lock problem was simply that the guest had entered the wrong code multiple times and then entered the correct code a minute later and gained entry. Mistakes happen and I'm always happy to make the drive up to the cabin to make the guest's experience great but a call telling me they got in would have been greatly appreciated. Sorry, venting...!
Fantastic! I hope to come back again.
I loved the cabin and the setting! The cabin was clean and warm. The hot tub was easy to access from the deck and was so relaxing. Loved sitting in the hot tub watching the deer walk around in the yard. :-)
Individual or personal results may vary...
Would give this a 3/5 stars because it is not secluded - zero privacy and surrounded by junkyard properties. When we stayed there the living room window was broken, hot tub cover was damaged, and we couldn’t get the upstairs lights to work. A repair man walked passed our bedroom window, we were not notified anyone would be on the property. No cell service whatsoever and the cabins internet travel at tortoise speeds! But I am giving this 1/5 stars because the owners made an accounting mistake, refunding our second payment in full, then demanded it back 25 days later. We refused then had to travel back to South Dakota to fight them in small claims court. So if you like being sued 3/5 stars, if you like being sued with all the above, 5/5 stars. After reading other negative reviews, renters beware!

Google Big Elk Place, Nemo, SD. Click on the map and our cabin is marked on Google Maps. Switch to satellite and decide for yourself about privacy.
"surrounded by junkyard properties."
There are 2 neighbors that come to mind. Surrounded no, they are down the road and you can't see them from the cabin.
"When we stayed the living room window was broken, hot tub cover was damaged, and we couldn’t get the upstairs lights to work"
We had a hail storm prior to their stay. It was garden window and only the top piece was cracked by hail, and being dual pane there was no leaking, just cosmetic. The part you look out wasn't damaged and the view wasn't affected at all. The hot tub cover had marks on it from the hail, everything worked as it should. Both have since been replaced.
"A repair man walked passed our bedroom window."
That was the professional hot tub service we use. They come on Mondays which is usually vacant. Great lesson for me to have them wait if I have a guest on Monday. This is the only valid complaint in this review.
"No cell service and the cabins internet at tortoise speeds!"
Cell service is hit and miss all over SD. I use WiFi calling when I am there. As far as the internet speed its probably not what someone from a city would be used to. We're just glad to have it, we had to wait for an opening on the system before we could subscribe to DSL.
"But I am giving this 1/5 stars because the owners made an accounting mistake, refunding our second payment in full, then demanded it back 25 days later. We refused then had to travel back to South Dakota to fight them in small claims court..."
Now I'm sure you see that this is actually a retaliatory review. This was NOT booked through VRBO. They paid through PayPal. When we went to return their deposit we accidentally returned the full payment. 14 days later I realized the mistake and called him and sent another invoice to correct the error. After that point he wouldn't answer calls or emails.
Not until court yesterday did I hear any complaints. If legitimate why not leave a review 196 days ago? Because of hail damage that didn't affect the usability of the cabin you thought it was right to keep $511.44 extra in addition to your full deposit? The Judge saw through your story and I'm sure VRBO users will too.
The lights up stairs: pull the string hanging from the light fixture.
