Why Barb or Jeff Pierce chose Black Hills

We love the Black Hills of South Dakota and fell in love with the Nemo area. Owning both an on road motorcycle and an off road side by side we enjoy spending as much time in the area as we can and owning this cabin has made enjoying the area even better.

This area has some of the greatest riding in the nation. Its also close to Sturgis and a great place to stay during the Rally or to enjoy riding in the Black Hills in the spring, summer or fall. Its an ideal location for the off road enthusiast. Miles and miles of great trails that are marked and USFS has great trail maps to aid you in your journey.

What makes this cabin unique

A Gold Nugget in the Black Hills

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time in five years that we have stayed at the Big Elk Cabin. Privacy, convenience to the attractions, and the exceptional level of maintenance, is why we will always pursue and secure this cabin for future trips to the Black Hills. It is obvious the owners care for this property and the overall experience of their guests. We did not need for a thing.... First class all the way. Thank You!

Modern, clean cabin in the woods!

  • 5 of 5

Cabin had everything we needed and plenty of space for 4. Loved seeing deer and wild turkeys, quiet area but not too remote. Spent a lot of time in the car visiting all the beautiful sights so it was great to come back and relax in the hot tub in the peace and quiet.

Great cabin with privacy

  • 4 of 5

The cabin was quite cold when we arrived but warmed up quickly. Hot tub was fantastic and plenty of privacy. Close to some fun trails and great scenery. Would definitely return.

Very Nice Cabin for Two

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a great stay in this little cabin. The owners really do take care of this property. Everything was clean and in good working order. Comfortable beds with nice linens, a hot shower and WiFi with satellite TV made the stay extra enjoyable. You will find everything you need in the kitchen (minus food) to prepare your own meals and having a washer and dryer available was a plus. While the location of the cabin is not exactly private, it was extremely quite and peaceful. It was fun to watch the turkey herds pass through. We only used the hot tub for about fifteen minutes because the maintenance guy showed up to clean it right after we got in, but it was in great condition and worked well. Pick up groceries before you get to Nemo as there are no grocery stores conveniently located nearby. We enjoyed the less than an hour drive from the cabin to Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park. We visited Deadwood but weren't impressed with anything about it. Overall we had a really nice stay at the Big Elk Place Cabin and would recommend it to anyone wanting to visit the Black Hills area.

Owner's Response: "While the location of the cabin is not exactly private, it was extremely quite and peaceful." We might have to edit that line. A few months ago we had some major thinning done on the property. Where as before you couldn't see the neighbor across the road you now have a clearer view from the front yard. I hated to loose any of our trees but after forest management was explained to me I realized it would be better to thin out our property and loose a few trees vs. if there was a forest fire loosing them all and the cabin. Check out our Facebook page for Big Elk Cabin and you can see how dense the trees used to be and other pics of the cabin. For future guests reading this the Nemo Mercantile is located 4 miles up the road in the town of Nemo. They have some basics for groceries and also gas. But yes before you get there if you need something specific pick it up before you get there. If you have forgotten anything Sturgis is 14 miles away. Sturgis has a few grocery stores, a Shopko, a Campbell's supply and an auto parts store along with auto dealers and fast food. If you are coming from the east you could stop in Rapid City or Sturgis before you head down Vanocker Road. If you are coming from the west Spearfish has a Walmart and quite a few other businesses. I should make a welcome book for guests with these suggestions. I take for granted I live in the area! Shelli thanks for staying. I hope you and your husband enjoyed your getaway!
