Why Barb or Jeff Pierce chose Nemo

We love the Black Hills of South Dakota and fell in love with the Nemo area. Owning both an on road motorcycle and an off road side by side we enjoy spending as much time in the area as we can and owning this cabin has made enjoying the area even better.

This area has some of the greatest riding in the nation. Its also close to Sturgis and a great place to stay during the Rally or to enjoy riding in the Black Hills in the spring, summer or fall. Its an ideal location for the off road enthusiast. Miles and miles of great trails that are marked and USFS has great trail maps to aid you in your journey.

A Gold Nugget in the Black Hills

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time in five years that we have stayed at the Big Elk Cabin. Privacy, convenience to the attractions, and the exceptional level of maintenance, is why we will always pursue and secure this cabin for future trips to the Black Hills. It is obvious the owners care for this property and the overall experience of their guests. We did not need for a thing.... First class all the way. Thank You!

Comfortable cabin

  • 3 of 5

All in all, it is a nice cabin but our first impression wasn't great. The house had been damaged over the summer and there was duck tape on the picture window, the hot tub was musty-smelling and there were lots of flies in the cabin. If the owner would have warned us about these things in advance and not after we got there, we would have appreciated it. The owner was very helpful when we had problems with the lock.

Owner's Response: Yes, the window... We are not thrilled with the insurance for taking so long to get the window claim approved so we can get it replaced. It's a garden window (Google for an image if you are not familiar with them) and only the top piece was cracked by hail, the part you look out wasn't damaged and the view isn't affected at all. I should just cut a piece of wood and attach it to the top and people would think it's a bay window and nothing would ever be noticed. I never thought it would take so long to get approval for replacement. The hot tub is professionally serviced on weekly basis. We've never had any complaint about the water quality or any smells. I'll make our guy aware of the comment. As far as the flies we usually make guests aware that in the fall log cabins have a few flies in them. We contacted an exterminator years ago and was told there really isn't much he could do, it's just a log cabin thing. We were up to the cabin the night before their check in and vacuumed up the flies but I'm sure over the next few days there were a couple more dead ones here or there. But to say lots... I guess it's a relative term. I'll take their advice and add something in the welcome guide about the chance there there might be flies in the fall so guests are not surprised when they find them during their stay. On the second day of their stay I received a call from the guest on her cell phone that they couldn't get into the cabin. I reminded her what the code was and she was insistent that she had been using the correct code so I told her I was on the way to the cabin. So I left work and headed up to the cabin to troubleshoot the problem. When I got there the guests were in the cabin and all was well. When I got home I looked on the computer where I can see all door activity. The lock problem was simply that the guest had entered the wrong code multiple times and then entered the correct code a minute later and gained entry. Mistakes happen and I'm always happy to make the drive up to the cabin to make the guest's experience great but a call telling me they got in would have been greatly appreciated. Sorry, venting...!

I loved the cabin and the setting! The cabin was clean and warm. The hot tub was easy to access from the deck and was so relaxing. Loved sitting in the hot tub watching the deer walk around in the yard. :-)

Enjoyable, Relaxing overall GREAT CABIN!

  • 5 of 5

We were out in the Hills to ride ATV's and we try to find a place close to the trails. This place is perfect for that, in a matter of minutes your on the trails and more then enough for our two days of riding without having to ride the same trails twice.

As for the cabin, very clean, great location. Lots of deer and turkeys, kept our Goldendoodles busy. It's extremely nice that they let your pets stay in there cabin. The beds are very comfortable, my wife said they were the most comfortable we have had in our many trips to the hills. There were only three of us so we were not crowded at all, I can see where if there was 6 of us you would have also had plenty of space.

Thank you so much for letting us enjoy your cabin! We hope you enjoy the fresh tomatoes out of our garden we left for you.

Thanks again,

Bret T
