About Betsy Barr

We've been coming to Bald Head for more than 15 years when my father bought a home on the island. We really love the beauty of the island - from the beaches to the forest.

We bought our first property in 2002, and when a property came available in the new Keepers Landing community we quickly moved there as we felt it was a perfect are to vacation with our small children. We have many good friends who own homes in Keepers Landing, and there is a real sense of neighborhood within Keepers. All the kids play together, and the parents can sit on any of the front porches to spend time together. It's a great atmosphere. We try to be on the island once a month if at all possible, and enjoy all four seasons on the island.

We added #23 Keepers Landing in 2005 as we loved the layout and design of the home.

Why Betsy Barr chose Cape Fear Station

The clean reverse floor plan of this home is very appealing. From the master bedroom you can see through the tree tops to the marsh. Behind the home is an area of forest. So the setting of the home is very peaceful, and is green year round because of the forest canopy.

What makes this cottage unique

Bald Head is accessible only by ferry or private boat. There are no cars on the island. Travel is by golf cart with the island speed limit of 18 mph! No honking horns of traffic jams here! With approximately 14 miles of beaches, a maritime forest, the Bald Head Island Club with its phenomenal golf course, the Shoals Club, and the Bald Head Island Conservancy with its great summer camp programs, there are an amazing number of things to do!

A big smile always comes across my face when the ferry docks at Bald Head Island Marina. It is truly a special place.

Run down

  • 2 of 5

We have stayed on BHI for over ten years and this house disappointed us the most. It's a great location on the island, but the house is not maintained. We arrived and there was sand everywhere and a horrible fish odor throughout the house. We had to buy candles to burn the entire week to rid the house of the smell. The furniture is dirty, not comfortable and lacks vacation style. The bed linens were grimy, pillows that didn't have pillowcases and bed covers that were dirty. Knowing the house is in the forest we expected some bugs, but we encountered a lot of cockroaches!! The golf cart has also been neglected and the bikes either had flat tires or chains that were off completely! This house needs a lot of TLC before we would rent there again!

Great house for a family

  • 5 of 5

This house is very well stocked with everything you need for a BHI trip... Except bug spray. Definitely recommended getting the high-powered bug spray at the market on the way in. Overall it was a wonderful trip.

House is quaint but needs lots of TLC

  • 2 of 5

The house was nice overall but is definitely in need of lots of TLC. It's dark, not all of the lamps/fixtures work, and unfortunately the fabric/upholstery is in very shabby, bad shape. We covered the couch and lounger chair with blankets b/c the stains and dinginess made it seem even darker and uncomfortable.

The kitchen is bright and open and pretty well stocked. The TV in the downstairs bedroom isn't even near a cable hook-up, so it's basically a prop; the radio down there wasn't much use either. While the linens are provided, they too look vey old and worn out, and most of the pillows are not in protective cases. A number of them even had obvious stains. The dryer also takes a long time to dry any clothes, so run very small loads. Also, the back patio cushions were weather-worn, and the patio was covered in leaves and debris. The grill was great, but even after cleaning up the patio, we didn't stay out there or spend any time out back.

We could only lock the front door from the outside; these are tricky locks, but they do work, and we did feel safe. It was just inconvenient to lock up from the outside every night. The golf cart was great and kept us in motion while we stayed here; this is a nice amenity.

I don't want to sound too harsh about this home b/c the price is right, however, it took some time to get past the obvious darkness of the place and the yucky upholstery and old linens. Betsy was very nice and flexible to work with, and this is a good home in a great location (although very wooded; no water views) but it needs attention. I should also mention that the property management folks were very helpful and attentive if you should need them (and you likely will.)

Ok for a small group or single family

  • 3 of 5

I've been going to bald head every year for the past 5 years and have rented on different parts of the island each time. Here are my thoughts after a week there in August. The cottage and neighborhood are very cute. I originally thought it had a view of the marsh but it just has access to the neighborhood dock. There is an amazing view on the dock and access to the creek if you have a kayak. The house was supposed to come with a kayak, but I didn't see it anywhere. I didn't inquire further, as I didn't intend to use it. This is basically a 2 bedroom house with a small little nook where a separate twin bed is housed. It would be good for one big family or 2 couples. The house is a bit dark and doesn't have a lot of natural light, as it is surrounded by trees. We also had quite a few bugs, which is not uncommon for houses in the woods on the island. The beds were very comfortable and the bathrooms were very nice and spacious. The kitchen is fine for cooking small meals and snacks , but it is not really well appointed for large scale meals. This is not uncommon for houses on the island in this price range though. Also the wireless is rather slow and slows down even further at night. It's ok to get emails and browse (slowly), but it is really difficult to stream videos. That being said, this always seems to be a problem and may be an island wide issue. Lastly, the golf cart is geared on the low side, which makes it rather slow. This is not a huge problem, as you are usually not going that far, but it can be a problem driving around the island, as everyone wants to pass you to get where they are going. Overall, this cottage is ok. I have stayed in better and worse on the island, but given that is does not have a view, it could probably use a few better amenities or a reduction in price.

LOVE this place

  • 5 of 5

This summer was the 3rd time we rented this property. As soon as we pulled up, my wife went ahead and booked it for Labor Day as well. Awesome property, great location, and Betsy could not be more attentive. We will be back again next summer for sure.
