About Nancy and Charles Barrall

My wife and I are natives of New Jersey. I work for Foley Caterpillar in northern New Jersey and my wife has been a school teacher in southern NJ for over 20 years. We have five children ranging from 17 to 27 and treasure each and every moment we get to spend together. As the children get older they get busier with their own lives, and we wanted a place we could all come together and make memories to last a lifetime.

Nancy and Charles Barrall purchased this house in 2014

Why Nancy and Charles Barrall chose Smith Mountain Lake

It has always been our dream to own a home on a beautiful lake. My father rebuilt the cabin he was born in not far from Smith Mountain Lake and we have spent many summers enjoying Virginia. Nancy's father built a cabin on a lake in Maine when she was seven and we both grew up loving the outdoors and spending time with family and friends on lakes. We knew we wanted to find the perfect lake property for our family, but did not want to go north. After years of searching, it only took one look at this property to know this was it!! This home has everything we had ever hoped for in a lake property. Our whole family can come and enjoy our new home for years to come. We can't wait to have grandchildren some day come and spend time at the lake. We feel like we are in our own little paradise, secluded from all the boats and people on the lake. Our cove is quiet and serene, but just a short distance from all of the action on the lake. The water is crystal clear and unlike Maine much warmer! We are so excited to share our paradise with others and have gone to great lengths to make everything perfect for our guests!

What makes this house unique

What we love most about our home is the location. We don't have to worry about getting hit by a jet ski or speeding boat. The location of the dock is perfect for a sunset view in the evening. At night our favorite thing to do is lay in the new hot tub and look at the stars. The stars on a clear night will take your breath away. There is so much room to spread out in the home and no matter how many people are there you do not feel like you are on top of each other. All of the pillows and bedding are brand new and everything has been redone both inside and out. The floating dock that was just installed is perfect for your boat which leaves the second stationary dock for running and jumping into the water. One of our favorite things to do is kayak. There are so many beautiful locations and coves on the lake to explore. We love the nature that surrounds our home, and know that you will enjoy all that this home has to offer. We really feel blessed by God that He has allowed us to own such a beautiful home, and hope that we are able to bless others as they spend time together with their family and friends here at Journeys End.

The overall experience was tremendous. We all had a great time and may be back next year. The only request we have for the next stay would be to upgrade the cable TV. We were unable to watch the College Playoff Bowl Games because the cable package did not include ESPN. For the guys this was pretty major let down. That was to be the centerpiece of the weekend hanging out and watching the games.

This. House. Is. BEAUTIFUL! My family and I rented it for my daughter's graduation from VaTech and it accomodated the extended family perfectly. We were able to plan a celebration that afternoon after the graduation for her friends, professors and other family to attend. The kitchen has everything you need. The backyard with the dock and the lake is exquisite. Everyone who came couldn't stop raving about how comfortable and beautiful the house was. In fact, my sister tried to rent itthis year for her daughters graduation but sadly, it was already rented. Beautiful. Truly! You won't be disappointed. We will definitely rent again!

Such a wonderful spacious place to stay that has so many extras!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much Nancy and Charles! Your property provided us a perfect place to enjoy a quiet weekend with our friends. We brought several kitchen appliances with us only to find them already in the house! Nancy goes above and beyond supplying so many things that most rentals don't. The kayaks were so fun for everyone to use. The hot tub was huge and kept in amazing condition. The house was wonderful and spacious for our whole group. The huge yard provided hours of entertainment for our kids collecting sticks and playing. We loved the fire pit. The back deck furniture was so comfortable and relaxing. Thank you again for providing such a place for us to use!

Great time at Smith Mountain Lake

  • 5 of 5

This was my family's first time at Smith Mountain Lake. It was my husband along with our children and grandchildren who are 5 and 2. We enjoyed the lake tremendously. My grandson especially enjoyed the dock. He spent time jumping off the dock and fishing. The house was roomy and comfortable. My grandson was very upset when we had to leave. Nancy was very helpful. I left a drawer full of clothes there by mistake and I contacted her and she got them and sent them back to me. That was wonderful. I would recommend this home to anyone. The private cove was great for swimming and using the kayaks. Would love to come back.

A Great Week at Smith Mountain Lake

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week and the home had everything that was listed and it was clean and well maintained. We were in cove where the kids could swim and use the kayaks provided. Water was deep off the dock where the kids fished everyday. Inside, the game room kept everyone busy and the large screen TV was great for movies in the evening. There was wood for the fire pit. The owners provided excellent customer service to include an in-depth book that included restaurants and grocery stores and the history of the lake. They included places to rent boats. It also included directions for using all of the appliances and the kitchen had everything imaginable to cook with. I would definitely recommend this beautiful property to our friends and relatives. Three happy families from Springfield, Virginia.

Stayed July 30-Aug 6th: Great house and location

  • 5 of 5

Nancy and Charles -thank you for your hospitality and for renting out your house, we had a wonderful week! We were a group of 2 families (9 of us) and the house was perfect. The location in the cove is great-we were able to float (the floats you provided are awesome!) around and kayak without having to worry about boats running us over. There are many places on the lake that are back to back houses and docks, not this house. There are only 4 docks in this cove and they are spread out. We did not see the neighbors all week. The house is wonderful, clean, very comfortable and so well stocked, you really thought of everything a renter would need. There are so many dishes, glasses and pans. From coffee makers to crock pot and everything in between. I cannot think of any time one of us could not find what we were looking for. Having the sheet/towel service is definitely an added bonus. We enjoyed the fire pit and the hot tub too.

We have been coming to the lake for over 20 years now and I would have to say this was the best overall rental experience we have had. From start to finish, thank you for making this such an easy vacation! If only you had control of the weather-3 days of rain! We hope to return soon.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much Bonnie. One of the things we liked most about the house is that you do not know anyone else is around. I also do not like it when the houses are back to back. I always say this place makes me feel like we have our own private park:) I am glad you loved the floats. I found them a few years ago and feel they are worth the money. We spend hours in the cove lounging on them. It is always so awesome to hear that you have been coming for so long and thought so highly of our place. That is definitely our goal for every renter. We really hope to have you come again in the future!!

Among the lakes water activities are power boating, canoeing, sailing, parasailing, swimming, fishing water skiing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing. SML's lakefront includes six free public boat launches and more than a dozen marinas where you can find the perfect boat rental for your visit. Power boats and wave runners can be rented at several locations on the lake, including: Bridgewater Plaza Marina (Boats can also be picked up at the State Park), Parrot Cove (Parrot Cove also rents Kayaks), Parkway Marina (formerly knows as Saunders Marina), Mitchell's Point Marina or Virgil Naff Sea Doo (wave runners only).

The closest boat launch and boat rental is Mitchell's Point Marina. Off water you can enjoy sightseeing that includes many spectacular views of the lakes mountainous 500-mile shoreline. Five challenging golf courses surround the lake. Smith Mountain Lake State Park includes miles of hiking trails and breathtaking views. To view the lakefront scenery and homes from the water you can cruise the Virginia Dare, a 19th century side paddlewheeler, or visit an alpacas farm on the lake. If you love fishing you are in the right place. Bassmaster rates SML among the USA's 25 best bass lakes! You must visit the SML's Dam Visitors' Center to see an awesome presentation that shows how the dam was built and what the area was like before the dam. There are three entrances near the lake to the Blue Ridge Parkway where you can visit eleven plus visitors centers and a multitude of outdoor activities. Don't forget to stop by Booker T. Washington National Monument. It allows the public to see what slavery was like and how the plantation system worked. There are many other local attractions like Appomattox Court House, Hickory Hill Vineyards and Winery, Science Museum of Western Virginia, and Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest. This is the perfect location to spend quality time with your loved ones.
