About Nancy and Charles Barrall
My wife and I are natives of New Jersey. I work for Foley Caterpillar in northern New Jersey and my wife has been a school teacher in southern NJ for over 20 years. We have five children ranging from 17 to 27 and treasure each and every moment we get to spend together. As the children get older they get busier with their own lives, and we wanted a place we could all come together and make memories to last a lifetime.
Nancy and Charles Barrall purchased this House in 2014
Why Nancy and Charles Barrall chose Huddleston
It has always been our dream to own a home on a beautiful lake. My father rebuilt the cabin he was born in not far from Smith Mountain Lake and we have spent many summers enjoying Virginia. Nancy's father built a cabin on a lake in Maine when she was seven and we both grew up loving the outdoors and spending time with family and friends on lakes. We knew we wanted to find the perfect lake property for our family, but did not want to go north. After years of searching, it only took one look at this property to know this was it!! This home has everything we had ever hoped for in a lake property. Our whole family can come and enjoy our new home for years to come. We can't wait to have grandchildren some day come and spend time at the lake. We feel like we are in our own little paradise, secluded from all the boats and people on the lake. Our cove is quiet and serene, but just a short distance from all of the action on the lake. The water is crystal clear and unlike Maine much warmer! We are so excited to share our paradise with others and have gone to great lengths to make everything perfect for our guests!
What makes this House unique
What we love most about our home is the location. We don't have to worry about getting hit by a jet ski or speeding boat. The location of the dock is perfect for a sunset view in the evening. At night our favorite thing to do is lay in the new hot tub and look at the stars. The stars on a clear night will take your breath away. There is so much room to spread out in the home and no matter how many people are there you do not feel like you are on top of each other. All of the pillows and bedding are brand new and everything has been redone both inside and out. The floating dock that was just installed is perfect for your boat which leaves the second stationary dock for running and jumping into the water. One of our favorite things to do is kayak. There are so many beautiful locations and coves on the lake to explore. We love the nature that surrounds our home, and know that you will enjoy all that this home has to offer. We really feel blessed by God that He has allowed us to own such a beautiful home, and hope that we are able to bless others as they spend time together with their family and friends here at Journeys End.
Pool / Spa
Had a fantastic trip to Smith Mountain Lake and this home was fabulous. Located in a quiet cove where you could relax and fish off dock. Charles and Nancy thought about everything you could possibly need during your stay to make you feel welcome..like they were hosting you and your family personally. I can’t wait to stay next year. Thanks!
Wonderful time in a beautiful location.
We had a blast and the house was amazing.
Thank you so very much Patty for your wonderful review. We work very hard to keep it well stocked and in great condition. We are so glad you enjoyed the weekend! We would love for you to visit us again in the future!
Excellent, but with a shortcoming
Well appointed and up to date. Kayaks and paddle board were pluses, as was the dock. We spent much time on the dock, which leads to the shortcoming - It was very slippery and muddy walking between the house and dock, even using the side of the slope. We had rain every day, making the walk through the mud treacherous. My suggestion is to lay a gravel path between the house and dock and insure it will be well drained.
One other issue was the new 75" TV. The sound kept cutting out, and the only way to restore it quickly was to use the channel button on the remote to toggle to another channel and back. Sound was immediately restored.
Thank you so much Robert for your review. They said that Smith Mountain Lake has not gotten this much rain in 100 years ,and I believe it. We have already scheduled to have a stone pathway put in to the lake, which will help when there is too much rain. The TV was just put in the weekend before you came ,and I will have someone check the sound immediately. I am glad you had a great time.
Beautiful house! Loved the quiet, calm cove, kayaks and paddleboard!
We had a fantastic time on our family vacation getaway. The house was the perfect size to fit all 8 adults and 3 little ones (5 and 1.5 years old). The amenities were greatly appreciated. We loved kayaking and paddle boarding, along with nights spent in the hot tub or around the fire pit roasting s’mores. The cove that the house sits on is tucked away from boat traffic which made it awesome for floating and swimming with the little ones. The living room was large enough to fit everyone and the kids had tons of space to tumble around and play. The game room was cool too (we just spent all our time outside or in the living room). The only thing that would make the house better would be a solid pathway down to the dock. There were a few falls from slipping on the mud on the way to the dock. We highly recommend a stay at this house when visiting Smith Mountain Lake! We had a blast!
We are so glad you had such a great time at Journey's End. I agree that the cove is perfect for floating and swimming especially with little ones because it is so protected from the boat traffic. We have had so much rain that I am sure the ground is soft. We want you to know that we are putting in a solid natural stone pathway to the lake in October this year. We appreciate your feedback and hope to have you back in the future!
Fun relaxing vacation
My first thought when we arrived was Wow. The house was as beautiful as the property. We went with the whole family and there was room for us all. The house was fully stocked, and it was stocked to support a large amount of people. Many other places we have rented may fit us all, but when it comes time to use the kitchen there is only small pots and pans. This was a very pleasant change.
The weather was great for the whole week even though it was extremely hot. The beautiful water was cool and refreshing , and everyone spent a lot of time in it.
Thank you Jodie for your kind review. We have tried to provide everything a crowd would need to have a great week and be able to accommodate a large crowd. So glad you had a great weather week! We would love to have you again in the future!
Vacation with entire family - Paradise indeed!
What a week, lake, house, etc.! We had a wonderful time. The house was perfect! Couldn't believe there was everything we needed there; games, books, everything for cooking. Beds were comfy and the house was laid out nice for our group. Weather was perfect and the lake is crystal clear! I hadn't been to Smith Mountain Lake in about 20 years and the water was the same as it was back then. Not very many boats at all. If we did it again we would rent a boat for more than 2 days. It was very relaxing and private. Loved it!
I am so glad you had a great week! It is amazing how clean and clear the water is in the cove. We also love the layout of the house, it gives us plenty of space to spread out or be together. Thank you for the great review and hope someday to have you back!
Among the lakes water activities are power boating, canoeing, sailing, parasailing, swimming, fishing water skiing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing. SML's lakefront includes six free public boat launches and more than a dozen marinas where you can find the perfect boat rental for your visit. Power boats and wave runners can be rented at several locations on the lake, including: Bridgewater Plaza Marina (Boats can also be picked up at the State Park), Parrot Cove (Parrot Cove also rents Kayaks), Parkway Marina (formerly knows as Saunders Marina), Mitchell's Point Marina or Virgil Naff Sea Doo (wave runners only). The closest boat launch and boat rental is Mitchell's Point Marina. Off water you can enjoy sightseeing that includes many spectacular views of the lakes mountainous 500-mile shoreline. Five challenging golf courses surround the lake. Smith Mountain Lake State Park includes miles of hiking trails and breathtaking views. To view the lakefront scenery and homes from the water you can cruise the Virginia Dare, a 19th century side paddlewheeler, or visit an alpacas farm on the lake. If you love fishing you are in the right place. Bassmaster rates SML among the USA's 25 best bass lakes! You must visit the SML's Dam Visitors' Center to see an awesome presentation that shows how the dam was built and what the area was like before the dam. There are three entrances near the lake to the Blue Ridge Parkway where you can visit eleven plus visitors centers and a multitude of outdoor activities. Don't forget to stop by Booker T. Washington National Monument. It allows the public to see what slavery was like and how the plantation system worked.
