About Nancy and Charles Barrall

My wife and I are natives of New Jersey. I work for Foley Caterpillar in northern New Jersey and my wife has been a school teacher in southern NJ for over 20 years. We have five children ranging from 17 to 27 and treasure each and every moment we get to spend together. As the children get older they get busier with their own lives, and we wanted a place we could all come together and make memories to last a lifetime.

Nancy and Charles Barrall purchased this house in 2014

Why Nancy and Charles Barrall chose Smith Mountain Lake

It has always been our dream to own a home on a beautiful lake. My father rebuilt the cabin he was born in not far from Smith Mountain Lake and we have spent many summers enjoying Virginia. Nancy's father built a cabin on a lake in Maine when she was seven and we both grew up loving the outdoors and spending time with family and friends on lakes. We knew we wanted to find the perfect lake property for our family, but did not want to go north. After years of searching, it only took one look at this property to know this was it!! This home has everything we had ever hoped for in a lake property. Our whole family can come and enjoy our new home for years to come. We can't wait to have grandchildren some day come and spend time at the lake. We feel like we are in our own little paradise, secluded from all the boats and people on the lake. Our cove is quiet and serene, but just a short distance from all of the action on the lake. The water is crystal clear and unlike Maine much warmer! We are so excited to share our paradise with others and have gone to great lengths to make everything perfect for our guests!

What makes this house unique

What we love most about our home is the location. We don't have to worry about getting hit by a jet ski or speeding boat. The location of the dock is perfect for a sunset view in the evening. At night our favorite thing to do is lay in the new hot tub and look at the stars. The stars on a clear night will take your breath away. There is so much room to spread out in the home and no matter how many people are there you do not feel like you are on top of each other. All of the pillows and bedding are brand new and everything has been redone both inside and out. The floating dock that was just installed is perfect for your boat which leaves the second stationary dock for running and jumping into the water. One of our favorite things to do is kayak. There are so many beautiful locations and coves on the lake to explore. We love the nature that surrounds our home, and know that you will enjoy all that this home has to offer. We really feel blessed by God that He has allowed us to own such a beautiful home, and hope that we are able to bless others as they spend time together with their family and friends here at Journeys End.

Everything was perfect. Kitchen was so...well outfitted. Game room could not have been better and the hot tub was wonderful. Full instructions on the house helped immensely.

Owner's Response: Thank you Ann! I am so glad you had a great week! Next year we will have that table, chairs and umbrella out on the dock for extra shade. It is nice with the little ones to have the beach area partially shaded. Looking forward to having you next year. Thank you!

This property was perfect for our family gathering. Immaculate, extremely well equipped, friendly and responsive owners all contributing to a perfect vacation loved by everyone. I would (and have) recommended this property to anyone looking for a beautiful lake front home to either relax and enjoy the quietness, or choosing any one of several available activities for as much activity as you want.

Great summer vacation!

  • 5 of 5

The house was great with plenty of room. The kitchen is well stocked and had enough storage space for what we needed for the week. Nancy was simply awesome and quickly responded with any questions we had. We would easily stay here again and recommend it to our friends.

If you are bringing a boat, I would recommend going over to Parkway marina to launch and load your boat. Mitchell's Point is very convenient to get gas, but extremely limited space to maneuver a truck and trailer for boat launch/load. Do not bring a boat and trailer to the house, just not enough room to move around. We dropped off the boat then brought the trailer back and parked it in an area off to the side of the driveway. We drove straight in and moved the trailer by hand to get it where we wanted.

Owner's Response: I am so glad you had a great week at Journey! Thank you Michael for the great advice on the boat. We also found out that if you put it in at Parkway Marina you can pay them a small fee and leave it there for the week. We would love to have you stay with us again in the future!

Great family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed at this house for a week and had a great time. The house came with almost everything you could ever need from the numerous kitchen gadgets, to the various lake toys including kayaks, paddle boards and floats.

We rented a boat and jet ski from the marina right across the lake....literally 2 mins by boat. The secluded cove was great for swimming and fishing. Mitchell's marina is also close by boat and a great place to grab a bite to eat.

The weather was good (we had rain one day) and we were able to enjoyed s'mores by the fire pit for several nights.

Nancy and Charles were extremely helpful in answering questions before and even during our stay.

We would highly recommend this home for anyone that wants to enjoy everything that SML has to offer.

Owner's Response: Thank you Chris for your wonderful review. We do try to provide everything we would want to have on vacation at the lake. I appreciate you noticing that! It also is nice to be right across from the Mitchell's Marina. My favorite part of the home is the private cove with no boat traffic. We would love to have you again in the future!

Among the lakes water activities are power boating, canoeing, sailing, parasailing, swimming, fishing water skiing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing. SML's lakefront includes six free public boat launches and more than a dozen marinas where you can find the perfect boat rental for your visit. Power boats and wave runners can be rented at several locations on the lake, including: Bridgewater Plaza Marina (Boats can also be picked up at the State Park), Parrot Cove (Parrot Cove also rents Kayaks), Parkway Marina (formerly knows as Saunders Marina), Mitchell's Point Marina or Virgil Naff Sea Doo (wave runners only).

The closest boat launch and boat rental is Mitchell's Point Marina. Off water you can enjoy sightseeing that includes many spectacular views of the lakes mountainous 500-mile shoreline. Five challenging golf courses surround the lake. Smith Mountain Lake State Park includes miles of hiking trails and breathtaking views. To view the lakefront scenery and homes from the water you can cruise the Virginia Dare, a 19th century side paddlewheeler, or visit an alpacas farm on the lake. If you love fishing you are in the right place. Bassmaster rates SML among the USA's 25 best bass lakes! You must visit the SML's Dam Visitors' Center to see an awesome presentation that shows how the dam was built and what the area was like before the dam. There are three entrances near the lake to the Blue Ridge Parkway where you can visit eleven plus visitors centers and a multitude of outdoor activities. Don't forget to stop by Booker T. Washington National Monument. It allows the public to see what slavery was like and how the plantation system worked. There are many other local attractions like Appomattox Court House, Hickory Hill Vineyards and Winery, Science Museum of Western Virginia, and Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest. This is the perfect location to spend quality time with your loved ones.
