Marie Rathburn purchased this studio in 2012

Why Marie Rathburn chose North Shore Oahu

My husband and his family has has been on the North Shore since the early 1900. We recently acquired this property from his parents and transformed it into a working farm. Now it's flourished with Avocados, Mangoes, Papayas, Bananas trees and several citrus & exotic fruit trees.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My wife and I stayed here for 9 days on a recent business/vacation trip. We opted to get out of the overcrowded downtown and stay on the north shore. We had a wonderful experience. Marie and Alec made us feel like part of their family. Even the neighbors welcomed us to their community. We felt so safe here that we left the sliding door open every night. The cross ventilation in the room along with the tropical breezes and ceiling fans kept us cool and comfortable. This is hands down the best place to stay in Oahu. When we arrived Marie greeted us with a fresh platter of papaya and lychee fruits. With the many fruit trees in their backyard we had fresh fruit for our entire stay. I really enjoyed the apple bananas and the lychee nuts right off the tree. Marie is quite an accomplished chef. She shared her recipes for her Kahlua pork and mango salsa which are to die for. The back porch was our favorite hangout. It has a nice granite topped table and comfortable chairs that look out on a green paradise filled with flowering plants and fruit trees. For hikers, there are many well maintained trails all around the area. For surfers and beach lovers, it doesn't get any better than here. The Pipeline and Sunset Beach are just minutes away. If you prefer more traditional tourist attractions the Dole Plantation, Polynesian Cultural Center, Green World Coffee Farm and several other smaller local attractions are all within a 15 mile radius of this property. We particularly enjoyed visiting one of the smaller, more private rocky beaches just 5 minutes away. The high speed Internet was easy to connect to with all our devices. The bandwidth was excellent measuring 20 MB down and 5 MB up indicating a good cable connection. I was able to open a VPN tunnel and access servers at my business in Florida with no issues at all. Ted's bakery is around the corner and offers a wide range of tasty items. If you prefer to cook, as we did, there is a Foodland supermarket just down the street. Foodland is a fully stocked supermarket and also offers a large selection of beer, wine and other spirits. There was a Foodland discount card attached to the room key. There is also a nice gas grill available which we used several times. Our suite was comfortable and we woke up every morning to the sounds of birds and other wildlife. It was much better than listening to cars and traffic noise. If you want to experience Hawaii like a local then look no further.

Great place!! Book now if you are wanting a vacation that you will remember forever.

  • 5 of 5

Marie and Alec were the greatest hosts you could ask for. Everything about the rental property was perfect. They have a beautiful property, and really cute cottage style studio that was perfect for my wife and I.

The hospitality that they showed us was amazing, and very memorable. If you are questioning staying here, think no longer and book, you won't regret it!

Located on the North Shore, you are very close to beautiful beaches like sunset beach and a snorkeling oasis at Sharks cove (Both walking distance, or a short drive)

Oh and they have 2 awesome little dogs Spartacus and Koa. Being a softy for dogs that was great to play with the pups when hanging out in the tropical back yard of Marie's.

We will definitely be back!!!

Thanks again Marie and Alec, you made our vacation one that we shall cherish forever!

Loved it!!

  • 5 of 5

This was my first time to Hawaii and I loved my experience. The first day we were in Waikiki and it was way to crowded for my liking. This little room on the North Shore was perfect. Marie was very kind and gave us great tips about the area including the location of a nice little beach that hardly had any people. When we arrived in our room we had a plate full of delicious fruit waiting for us in the fridge plus a pitcher of water and one of guava ice tea...YUM! Later in the week Marie brought us avocados and guacamole both very good. The room it self was great. There is no AC, but there are 3 ceiling fans and she also provided a standing rotating fan as well as a small one next to the bed. Beach chairs, boogey boards, towels umbrellas, coolers, and hand bags were also available. Thank you so much Marie for helping make our honeymoon memorable.

The property is peaceful and a delight. It's away from crowds yet close enough for easy access.

Marie has done a wonderful job of making her home private for her guests and fully stocked with all the needs plus! Beach chairs, towels, ice chest, umbrella and even a few sarongs! Marie is familiar with the island and her directions were invaluable more than once. The stone and tiled shower in a bathroom with its own entrance was perfect for our many trips to the beach. Beautiful fruit from the gardens were delicious and arriving to homemade ice cream was AMAZING. The 2 little dogs were cute company as well. My daughter and I went for quiet time together and we received it. I loved the friendly talks with our host and just enjoying her home with her. Thank you so much Marie! The Lord gave us a special blessing getting to know you. I hope to return with my whole family.

Then true spirit of aloha and ohana experienced here!

From the day of reservation to the day of departure we felt welcomed and part of the family. Communication was always easy and prompt with Marie. After a long day of travel we were welcomed with a delicious and beautiful fruit platter from their property, cool fruit infused tea and a small vase of fragrant blossoms.

The apartment was exactly as we expected yet even better. The view out the kitchen window was the lush family property hillside (eastern facing for the morning sun), everthying needed to prepare a meal at home, and even a grocery saving card on the key chain. Everyday brought a new treat from our Hawaiian family such as homemade ice cream made with their farm fruit, fresh guacamole made that morning from avocados, a mango-banana-berry smoothie (the best I've ever had!) before surf lessons, or a coconut picked from the tree and opened in front of us so we could drink the milk with a straw. We followed them around their property and heard all about the plants and history. We loved Spartacus and Koa the family dogs and we sought them out for morning greetings daily. They are loving and well behaved.

On the day of departure we were leaving to visit my grandparents interred at Punch Bowl and were given a tropical bouquet of Bird of Paradise and other flowers from their farm to lay graveside; it looked like a colorful arrangement from a florist.

My daughter and I did not want to leave. As we pulled out of the driveway she was inquiring how soon we could return to the Rathburn's place. I can not say enough good things about them; helpful with what beaches for specific activities, recommendations for food and surf lessons, insight to Hawaiian culture, easy to talk with~ the Rathburn's are exceptional hosts.

We stayed over a week and spent the 2nd week in Honolulu. For me, I preferred the laid back life of the North Shore and will return again to the Rathburn's.

Excellent!

The studio was meticulous. It was in close proximity to every event we attended on the North Shore. It had every amenity that was needed, every comfort from home was available. Marie was so helpful and kind. She made us feel so welcome from the minute we arrived and even after we left, she sent a warm note! I definitely recommend this stay.

Nice couple retreat

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a small inexpensive clean and nicely appointed vacation rental, look no further. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay here and we are looking forword to our next visit already. Located in the heart of Oahu's North Shore, this unit is walking distance to Sunset Beach and Sharks Cove is very close. There is a well equipped kitchen with a full size refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven and a portable induction cooker that we found very useful. The drawers are chock full of utensils. The bathroom is tiled beautifully and you there is a full size laundry machine in the unit. A dryer is available. The bed is firm and comfortable and the cable equipped Flat Panel TV is perfectly placed for couch or bed viewing. While the unit is small it is packed with all the amenities to make your Hawaiian vacation the best ever.
