Come and spend your vacation in this quiet, peaceful setting on the Ware River. The estate boasts 290 ft of shoreline. This charming and historic 2 story cottage sits on 7 acres located on the Ware Neck Peninsula. The cottage has hand hewn post and beam construction dating to approximately the 1790s. There are fireplaces in both the living room and bedroom. There are ceiling fans in the bedroom and on the front porch. Just in front of the cottage is the restored icehouse built in the late 18th century and used to store blocks of ice brought from up north by steamboats down the Chesapeake Bay. The water front is a short stroll and has a pier with a floating dock. This is a perfect spot for watching beautiful sunsets while enjoying a glass of wine, fishing, crabbing or launching your canoe or kayak. The Cottage is 70 min from Richmond or Norfolk, 2 hours from DC, 45 min from Williamsburg, 30 min from Yorktown and 20 minutes to the Arts community of Matthews. It provides a great home base for exploring this beautiful and diverse region of Virginia.

A lovely, quiet place to enjoy a long weekend. Clean and comfortable. Thanks for a pleasant stay, and for letting our furry friend join us!
A four-season gem in historic Virginia
Picturesque cottage. Pristine landscaping. Peaceful atmosphere. This property far exceeded our family's expectations on every level.
You'll be hard-pressed to find owner-hosts more devoted to ensuring the happiness of their guests than the Montgomerys. We were treated like family; our teenager, who enjoyed the comfort of the pull-out sofa bed and the charm of the former plantation, was adamant about coming back for a future trip!
If you're toying with the idea of taking a trip to Gloucester County, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, or even Richmond, please consider booking a day, a week, a month, or more at this treasure. You'll be thrilled with the results.
A Rare Opportunity
I am a writer and almost at a loss for words when it comes to describing the rare opportunity we found staying here to be. The cottage is remarkable in its tasteful decor and age, with all modern needs. The property it sits on is expansive and lush, with much to look at and absorb. The kitchen garden with its herringbone brick paths amid herbs and vegetables, the beautiful Ware River with its boats and osprey, iridescent bluebirds, a fairy ring of crepe myrtles--and the silence punctuated by the calls or thrush ad cardinals. There is a lot to do in Gloucester County and nearby Matthews County. Pristine beaches to kayak or swim from, Merroir Restaurant just over in Middlesex County, but just hanging around Glebefield, sitting on its bricked front porch with a guitar or on its dock with a book or walking the half mile drive out to the vegetable stand and back--all a precious experience my husband and I will treasure and hope to repeat. Thank you to the marvelous hosts for creating this peaceful haven.
It was a pleasure to host you two. Thank you for your thoughtful review. We hope to see you again soon.
No Ware else I'd rather be
This place was as close to perfection as I have come across. I've stayed at over 7 properties in the past few years and this is the first house I can truly give 5 stars. I can be quite critical and I could find NOTHING wrong that bothered me. There was nothing broken, installed backwards, leaking, smelly, loud, dirty or concealing large mutant dust bunnies. But there ARE bunnies that hop around as you go down the single lane road to the house! So cute! Instead of spending the whole trip mentally preparing a diplomatic review I was actually able to relax and enjoy myself! The place was super clean and tastefully furnished- no furniture rejects here! Fully functioning kitchen and a window seat I never got a chance to appreciate! Plenty of towels, beach towels, and a soft pillow top mattress. The central AC was strong and the washer dryer were new. I loved the proximity to the river, but not as much as my dog! I really enjoyed launching the kayak from the dock and the breeze from the river kept the bugs away. And its SO quiet. SO RELAXING! There are a few things to note: if you attract mosquitos like I do I suggest bringing an electric tennis racquet to zap any that sneak in when you come in and out of the house. The minerals in the water can make it difficult to discern when to stop rinsing. And if you want to swim in the river, it can be tricky trying to climb back onto the dock. If there was a rope ladder or something it would be helpful. The house is located on a circular drive across from another rental with a huge circular ice house in the middle. Even though you share the driveway its very private. I loved staying in such a historic property but also having the modern comforts. John and Peg have great attention to detail and are so nice. This a place I would come back to considering how sad my dog was when she realized she couldn't go in the river again!
Deborah, I love your clever title. We were really worried if you enjoyed your stay because it rained much of the week. It has also rained much of the month! Mosquitos are to be expected on the water but I have to say, they are definitely worse after all of the recent rain. I feel thoughtless not to have told you that there is an aluminum ladder, much like a pool ladder,, in the bench seat on the dock. It hooks onto the floating dock. We enjoyed having you all on the property and thank you for your kind words.
A reel Virginia experience!
We stayed for a month in a beautiful cottage, well restaured and equipped. We were staying at the Middle Cottage, with access to all the property. It's clean and well maintained. We enjoyed eating at the picnic table oftenly and take our apero or coffee sit on theswinging bench. The owners gave us more than a good service: they were discret as we like and friendly when we were together. We will recommend this property to birdwatchers or people who like to be surround with nature! We enjoyed going to the Nuttall historic store or to the beautiful nursery Brent & Becky's Bulbs closeby. We drove to see the towns arround, like Matthews, as well of the beautiful town of Richmond (the Museum of Arts of Richmond (VMFA) is a must see). Also, Williamsburg and Yorktown historic areas were pleasant to visit. It give you an idea that the Historic Cottage on Ware Neck River is well situated on the map! For shoppers, there is a big outlet center at Williamsburg too.
Don't hesitate to contact Peggy and John, they are very welcoming people!
Marcelle and Serge,
We loved having you here for the month of May. We were charmed by your French accents and invigorated by your zest for life and willingness to have new adventures like learning to catch, steam, and pick crabs so that you could make a real Virginia crab cake. Please come see us again!
Perfect place & location
This cottage is on a large property that was perfect for walking our two dogs. The grounds are immaculately kept, and the owners were warm and friendly. The place itself has fireplaces on both floors (although we did not use them, there were instructions provided on how to do so as well as wood provided). There is a room for laundry, and a sweet little window seat for reading (with overhead light). Having rented many places for our vacations over the years, I have to say this was my favorite so far. I also want to mention that the housekeeper does an excellent job... with dogs, we're always wiping water/hair off the floor and there was absolutely no dirt whatsoever... and no remnants of previous pet owners either. One other great thing is that this place is located less than an hour from Williamsburg and Jamestown, and about 30 mins (or less) to Yorktown. There is plenty in the nearby towns to eat and grocery shop. We loved our stay. Thank you again, and if we're ever back in the area, we know where to stay! :)
We are in a lovely rural setting and yet close enough to Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg to enjoy all they have to offer including historical tours, amusement parks, Farmers markets and fine dining.
