About Kristine Tate

I am originally from the Upper Penninsula and left the area in 1983. I spent the last 20+ years in South Florida as a Flight Attendant and Business Owner. I recently relocated back to the Munising area to allow my children to experience wonderful Midwest living and the beautiful outdoors.

Kristine Tate purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Kristine Tate chose Upper Peninsula

I have always loved Grand Marais and felt a special attachment to the area many years ago. There is just something about being here that is really good for the soul! I purchased this home after seeing it while on the garden tour through Grand Marais. It is a very old home and needed quite a bit of attention. My friends and family thought I had lost my mind and tried to persuade me otherwise. There is such a great feeling inside this home. I knew there had to be alot of happy memories created and so much history. While I worked on the home, several elderly people have stopped to visit and share those stories with me. Just as I had expected, they were amazing stories about great families and the wonderful lives that were lived on the corner of Carlson.

What makes this cottage unique

The location is just perfect. Being a few blocks from the water makes for great summer nights by the bonfire. It's much warmer inland, without the breeze, as summer temps in Grand Marais are generally on the cooler side. While in Grand Marais, I walk and bike everywhere I need to be. I also enjoy the evenings sitting on the porch and visiting with locals and tourists as they stroll the neighborhoods, dog walk, and bike. Car watching on H-58 is also entertaining as many exotic car clubs make the trip from Munising to Grand Marais daily.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Mermaid Inn. It had everything we needed or could have wanted for our week stay in the UP. The house was very clean and charming and spacious! We have two little boys who loved it all. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't as cooperative as we would have liked to take full advantage of the fire pit, bikes and yard. We did have an issue with some of the inner workings of the house and the owners were quick to respond and get the issue looked into promptly. We would definitely stay here again. The location is perfect!

Owner's Response: Dear Amy and Family, Thank you so much for the wonderful review. I am so happy you enjoyed the Mermaid and we absolutely loved having you as our guest! The cottage was so clean and tidy upon your departure, we hope you were able to relax during your stay! If you return to the the Upper Peninsula again, we hope you will choose to stay with us once again in one of properties in both Grand Marais and the Munising area. Enjoy the remainder of your summer and thank you again. Kristine

Cozy

  • 3 of 5

The weather didn't cooperate to enjoy the entire property. We didn't get a chance to ride the bikes, or sit outside. My husband did sit on the little porch and enjoyed watching a chipmunk. When it wasn't raining, we were able to walk to the nearby campground to get a good view of Lake Superior. We had delicious pancakes at a church across from the campground. Was disappointed in the small town. Since we made a day trip to Pictured Rocks, we missed the by-plane maneuvers. That would have been interesting. A little trouble getting into the house, but owner graciously helped us with a phone call. Beautiful scenery driving to Grand Marais with little civilization. Enjoyed!

Owner's Response: Dear Sheryl, Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. I'm so glad you enjoyed the cottage, despite the weather. I apologize for the difficulty you experienced with the lock box. I wish I had an answer, we have not had an issue in the past and the guest after your arrival was able to access, as well. Maybe, just one of those days?!! Enjoy your summer and we hope to have the opportunity to host your group again in the future.

Nice Place

  • 5 of 5

Very nice place to stay, close to town. Only issue we had was not a lot of parking for Snowmobile trailers and our trucks.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the nice review. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm sorry we didn't have enough parking for you. This was our first winter renting and would have made more room for you. We plowed for 2 trailers and 3 trucks, so I will be sure to ask next year. Thanks for the note and we hope to see you again next year. Enjoy your summer!

Great Experience!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this place! The location was perfect for us- we used the house as a central point between Munising and Newberry to enjoy Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Oswald's Bear Ranch/Tahquamenon Falls both of which are a must do for people with kids. The house comfortably fit our family of four and there was plenty of room on the property for our children (7 and 9) to run around. We loved the breeze coming off the bay in the early morning and the street was typically pretty quiet- it was a great place to just relax. The house had everything we needed and I would definitely rent again if I ever plan to go back to the area. It's definitely worth it!
