About Kristine Tate

I am originally from the Upper Penninsula and left the area in 1983. I spent the last 20+ years in South Florida as a Flight Attendant and Business Owner. I recently relocated back to the Munising area to allow my children to experience wonderful Midwest living and the beautiful outdoors.

Kristine Tate purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Kristine Tate chose Upper Peninsula

I have always loved Grand Marais and felt a special attachment to the area many years ago. There is just something about being here that is really good for the soul! I purchased this home after seeing it while on the garden tour through Grand Marais. It is a very old home and needed quite a bit of attention. My friends and family thought I had lost my mind and tried to persuade me otherwise. There is such a great feeling inside this home. I knew there had to be alot of happy memories created and so much history. While I worked on the home, several elderly people have stopped to visit and share those stories with me. Just as I had expected, they were amazing stories about great families and the wonderful lives that were lived on the corner of Carlson.

What makes this cottage unique

The location is just perfect. Being a few blocks from the water makes for great summer nights by the bonfire. It's much warmer inland, without the breeze, as summer temps in Grand Marais are generally on the cooler side. While in Grand Marais, I walk and bike everywhere I need to be. I also enjoy the evenings sitting on the porch and visiting with locals and tourists as they stroll the neighborhoods, dog walk, and bike. Car watching on H-58 is also entertaining as many exotic car clubs make the trip from Munising to Grand Marais daily.

Great Experience!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this place! The location was perfect for us- we used the house as a central point between Munising and Newberry to enjoy Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Oswald's Bear Ranch/Tahquamenon Falls both of which are a must do for people with kids. The house comfortably fit our family of four and there was plenty of room on the property for our children (7 and 9) to run around. We loved the breeze coming off the bay in the early morning and the street was typically pretty quiet- it was a great place to just relax. The house had everything we needed and I would definitely rent again if I ever plan to go back to the area. It's definitely worth it!

Adorable at a great location

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is located on a quiet street, just a few blocks from the bay, the beach, restaurants and shops. Cottage was comfortable and very nicely decorated. Very girly, so not sure if you stay with teenage sons if they will appreciate the pink bedding, but my girls loved it. Owner is very responsive. We loved the bikes, because everything is bike distance in town. Early morning we could get a coffee at Breakwall Bakery and drink it on a bench overlooking the bay and small harbor. It was great hanging on the porch and in the garden to read or just enjoy the few people passing. They have two beaches, one directly on Lake Superior, great for watching the sunset and one in the bay with calmer and warmer water. Colored Pictured Rocks is just a few miles away with great small hikes, waterfalls and overlooks. You will be very close to the visiting center to pick up a map. We went to the Log Slide overlook and Miners Castle which were both beautiful, we hiked to Sable Falls and the dunes, only 2 miles away from the cottage. Your visit will not be complete without a stop at the local West Bay diner. Best food in town and an awesome old fashioned diner. They also have a gift shop, old fashion candy, best pies and the owner has written several books. We also had dinner at the Dunes Saloon and brewery, great local place with local brewed beer en the battered white fish is delicious there. We throughly enjoyed our visit and definitely recommend the cottage, it is a cozy home and fun to have the feel of an old fashioned cottage with the comfort.

Great place, quiet in the woods and close to beach and fun towns, ample biking and hiking

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time in this cabin. It is very spacious and clean, has all the things you need in a kitchen. I also loved to outdoor shower. The garage underneath the cabin feels like one big man cave and was also accessible to us with it's own bathroom. There is a fire pit you can use and a hammock in the shade under beautiful trees. We saw plenty of deer. There are a few bikes that you can use. We biked once to town, very nice biking path, it is about 8 miles on the bike to town since you make a little detour. By car it is a 10 min drive with a large supermarket, restaurants and some fun shops. We loved the Cherry Company, great with kids or even teenagers. It has a soda tasting bar that my kids got a kick out of, then there is a shop with products all made with cherries that you can taste from cherry chocolate covered coffee beans to cherry bbq sauce and a bakery. From the house there are within 10 minutes at least 5 different beaches you can go to. Also many short walks within 10 - 20 min drive. Visiting the Bear dunes is of course a must and watching the beautiful sunsets. We went kayaking down crystal river which was a great outing as well. We loved it since the house is in the middle of the woods, very quiet, sometimes we could hear kids play but other than that you did not hear a thing, but fun shops and restaurants and towns are not too far away. We would definitely come back here. Communication with owner is great as well.
