About the property

4 Bedroom, 2 bathroom near downtown and beach

Want to stay in the comforts of a beautiful, well maintained, family home while seeing all manistee and surrounding areas have to offer? Welcome to the short house!

This early craftsman style home sits in an idealistic neighborhood just a few blocks from downtown manistee, the marina, the river walk, and the beach. We have named it the short house after the original owners for whom it was built in 1917. It simply has everything you need for a comfortable vacation.

On the second floor are bedrooms 1, 2, and 3 each with a queen bed. Bedroom 4 has 2 twin beds. There is also a queen sized air mattress and fold out sofa if needed. The full bath is upstairs as well.

On the main floor is a large living room, dining room, kitchen, half bath, and quaint 'breakfast porch'.

This historic home is beautifully preserved with lots of original woodwork and lighting fixtures, hardwood floors throughout, and glass pocket doors. However, bathrooms are completely updated and modern. Other modern 'must haves' include a flat screened tv, cable, dvd player, netflix, and internet. The fully equipped kitchen has everything you need to cook (if you want!) including a convection oven/range, full size fridge, microwave, coffee maker and small appliances, cookware, dishes/glassware and utensils. The basement has a washer and dryer and outdoor items including beach chairs. Beach towels are also furnished. A patio set is found in the back yard and the fantastic front porch has a comfy sofa waiting for you. In the spring and summer the yard is very pretty with flowering bushes and trees.

Short house is in walking/biking/short driving distance to the 1st street beach and 5th avenue beach, a public golf course, theaters, playgrounds, shopping, restaurants, galleries, live theater, a skate park, and much much more! Lake Michigan is less than one mile west--perfect for a morning walk on the beach!

We chose manistee as our 'home away from home' because of its beauty, history, location on the lake, small town charm, and also it's proximity to many other attractions and towns. These include sand dunes, amusement parks, wineries, golf, scenic drives, ski resorts, horseback riding, kayaking, and much, much more! Most within an hour of driving. When you are finished with your day trip, come back 'home' to rest in quaint manistee and the short house.

About Kristen Pawlak

Our family is Ralph, Kristen and our three sons, living in Louisville KY. While we have lived a few places, Ralph grew up in the 'thumb' area of Michigan near Lake Huron. Kristen grew up outside of Ann Arbor in southeast MI and went to school in Kalamazoo, one hour away from Lake Michigan.

Kristen Pawlak purchased this house in 2013

Why Kristen Pawlak chose Manistee

Being native Michiganders, we wanted to have a place in our home state for frequent vacations and to have in our family for the next generations. We love Michigan year round, but believe it is simply the best place to be in the summer months. Through our travels we fell in love with the west shore with it's white sand beaches and believe the more north you go, the prettier it gets. A visit to Manistee captured our hearts and we knew this was the place!

What makes this house unique

Not only do we love the scenery, history, and quaintness of Manistee, we love the location relative to so many attractions including Sleeping Bear, Traverse City, ski resorts, an amusement park, and many cool small towns. We also wanted a home in a town on Lake Michigan. We looked at many homes in town, but fell for the Short House instantly. All the beautiful wood, numerous original details, and charm of each room caught our eye. The front porch is truly Kristen's 'happy place'! The back 'breakfast porch' is her mother Dolly's favorite place for reading and coffee.

Great Home for your get-away trip

  • 5 of 5

The home was very nice and spacious. We liked that it was walking distance to the beach, tennis courts, a nice park and the downtown district. Our stay at this home was a relaxing time. I recommend this home to future travelers.

Charming house with character but could use some updates

  • 4 of 5

The house was in a great location. Super quiet neighborhood. Walk or bike to beach and downtown. There’s a small school playground across the street. House was clean and orderly when we arrived. We really appreciated being able to use the laundry machines.

The kitchen is very dated but has all you need to make meals as far as pots and pans, plates, glasses, silverware etc.

None of the living room or dining room windows would open/ still had the storm windows on. The only windows that would open downstairs were kitchen and bathroom windows and one at the base of the stairs. It got pretty stuffy in the dining and living room areas in the afternoons w the sun. Only one bedroom upstairs has a window A/C. So it was a bit hot to sleep even with fans a couple of the nights And I agree with other reviews about needing more mirrors particularly in the bedrooms since there is only one bathroom with a shower that has a small mirror. The half bath does not have an outlet. I would also recommend bringing a powerstrip extension cord for each bedroom.

All in all we really enjoyed our stay dispite the above thoughts. We would definitely stay there again.

The owner was very quick to respond to any concerns and questions we had. I really appreciated that.

We were in the area for a week for the North County Trail Run and this was a great place to stay. Like I mentioned, super quiet location so had a great nights sleep before the race!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments and we're glad you enjoyed the area and your visit! Just a reminder that the Short House is a 100+ year old home. While many northern MI homes do not have central air due to average temps, we have stated we plan to update to central air given the very unusual warm summers we've had. The kitchen does in fact have all conveniences and modern appliances other than a dishwasher, which is stated. (The vintage metal cabinetry is part of the historic charm.) As noted in the one previous response, two of the four bedrooms do have mirrors. We will, however, look at adding a closet mirror to one of the (non children's) bedrooms. The bathroom mirror is a standard size medicine cabinet in a fully updated bathroom. We really do take your suggestions to heart and hope you can return! Just know that a 100 year old home, including many in the area, has limitations to be expected...

Greathome, convenient area.

  • 4 of 5

Hello. We had a great stay. I trust you will find everything in order. Your home is beautiful, we loved the charm. We also rented another house a few blocks west to accommodate the rest of our family. My only comment would be to consider adding a few mirrors in the bedrooms to ease the getting ready process. We purchased extension cords and left one, this made it easier to place the fans. Overall great stay.

Kind regards,

Lisa Collins

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments and we're so glad you enjoyed your stay! Two of the three adult bedrooms have mirrors and we'll consider where we can add more. There are extension cords in the linen closet and thank you for leaving another!

Beautiful Home!

  • 4 of 5

Our family loved staying here. It was spacious, clean and had everything you could ask for. The outdoor patio area and fire pit was adorable. The Kitchen had everything necessary and the bathrooms were very nice.

Our only complaint was not being able to open windows in the LR/Dining area. It was very hard to cool down the house. If we were able to open up a few windows in each of these rooms we could get some cross ventilation which would allow the place to cool down much better. Or if ceiling fans were installed in these rooms this would help - the kitchen ceiling fan made a big difference keeping cool while working in the kitchen. All things considered a wonderful place to stay!

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay and found our home spacious! Yes, it's been unusually warm in Northern MI. The dining room windows do open, as do the foyer windows next to the living room, but it can be tricky when the temps are unusually high as they were.Central air is a planned enhancement in the coming year!

Manistee and nearby towns have something for everyone in the family. There are so many beach/water, fishing and boating activities on Lake Michigan of course, but also on nearby inland lakes.

There's great scenery, a historic downtown and River Walk, house tours, incredible Victorian architecture, and live theater at The Ramsdell. Be sure to see a first run movie at the renovated historic Vogue Theater--they also show 35 cent Saturday children's matinees too.

Favorite fun dining is House of Flavors, special dining at the Blue Fish, pub/bar is TJ's, coffee at Goody's and Outpost. Several other casual restaurants and pubs are within walking distance of the house.

You can walk practically anywhere, everything is close and the town is very safe. Within a few blocks of the house are a skate park and several playgrounds.

A variety of shopping is available from upscale specialty shops and boutiques to antiques and thrift stores. Be sure to stop by the Daybreak Art Gallery too.

The Little River Casino is very nice for gaming and also great restaurants. Douglass Valley Winery and Orchard is minutes away, they also have live music in the summer. Summer is extra special with a weekly farmer's market in town and free music concerts on the river and at the 1st Street Beach. We love both the 1st Street and 5th Avenue Beaches and all they offer.

There are several 18 hole golf courses nearby and one a few blocks from the house. Other cool things for the family are lots of local festivals, mini golf, and laser tag.

And in the winter you won't want to miss the fabulous Victorian Sleighbell Festival where the whole town celebrates with a variety of activities including a parade downtown and horses pulling a sleigh with the town square Christmas tree!

That's just in our little town! Within about an hour driving you have Sleeping Bear National Park and Sand Dunes, two ski resorts, and an Amusement Park--Michigan Adventure, plus many many other small towns with their own unique attractions and local flavor.

Of course Lake Michigan is a huge draw with its gorgeous coastline! Go just a little further north and see Traverse City, further south and ride the sand dunes in your own dune buggy...and stop in the fun little towns along the way.

We could go on and on because we discover great new things to do each time we visit!
