Overview

About the property

a resort-style dream home with magnificent ocean view and privacy

When you walk through the front door, the Ocean view is breathtaking! Unobstructed ocean views from every room in the house! Our expansive resort style home is only 500 feet from the ocean, on a gentle slope, with 180 degree ocean views, and sunset views every day of the year! Five specious bedrooms all have balconies with an ocean view, and each room can be entered privately. The large, covered lanai provides a stunning open view from the house facing the ocean, with mahogany floors flowing from inside to outside seamlessly through 38 ft pocket sliders.

The house is a gem with its huge size, great location and top amenities. It is superbly spacious, with 4331 sq.ft plus 2000 sq. ft. of covered lanais. It is equipped with everything you can think of for a luxury vacation home, including a gourmet kitchen with professional Viking appliances and kitchen supplies, huge family room and recreation room equipped with ping-pong, pool table, foosball…, and wi-fi everywhere in the house!

The main floor has three bedrooms, along with the great room and kitchen. The ground floor has two more bedrooms, along with the recreation room. The main floor has two full baths and a half bath, and the ground floor has another two full baths and a half bath. The main floor goes out to the covered lanai with outdoor grill and dining, sitting area, which further goes out to the infinity pool and spa area. The ground floor opens to a stained concrete lanai and a large lawn, also facing the ocean, with another outdoor sitting area. The large lawn is great for light sports, and playtime with the kids.

The house is located in a private gated development. Don’t be surprised if you don’t see any neighbors during your whole stay! It is however only 4 miles from Spencer Beach, and only 10 minutes drive to Hapuna Beach State Park, one of the top white sand beaches in the world! Three minutes south of the house is the quaint, historic town of Kawaihae. There you will find restaurants, a fresh fish market, fruit, vegetable and flower market, a dive shop and catamaran cruises. It's a 20 minute drive up to the beautiful ranch town of Waimea, and 40 minutes to the airport and Kona. With only 10 minutes to Mauna Kea and Hapuna Prince Resorts, you can easily access the many resort shopping, restaurants, golf and tennis facilities.

With its deep ocean pockets, right in front of out house is about the best place on the island for whale watching. Dive boats anchor in front of the house, which is one of the favorite dive spots on the Kohala Coast. Many of our guests say it is the best snorkeling they have ever had. On the 4th of July and New Years Eve you can watch the fireworks on our lanai. And with the special location of the house, we have gorgeous and unique sunsets each night, 365 days a year.

There are many activities nearby including golf, tennis, diving, sailing, fishing, zip-lining, hiking, surfing and more. But, you may want to relax at the house and sip mai tais by the pool, play bocce ball on the lawn, have a sunset drink on the large lanai overlooking the ocean and have a BBQ on the biggest built-in viking grill you have ever seen.

The house is perfect for special celebrations, family reunions, and a couple’s retreat. It is also a great training spot for the Ironman triathalon in October. There are two beautiful outdoor showers which are convenient for rinsing off sand and dirt after a day's beach outing or biking/boating. The whole house is decorated in a Hawaiian/Indonesian resort style. Many rich hardwoods and natural materials have been used. The infinity edge pool looks like it flows into the ocean, there are lounge chairs on quartzite stone pool deck and on the lower lanai beside the lawn. The whole feel of the house is serene, open and expansive.

So if you are looking for a dream vacation home for a special celebration, vacation or reunion, this one is a gem that is hard to come by. Superb location at the gated Kohala Waterfront, on one acre of private, landscaped gardens 500 feet from the Ocean. Spectacular ocean views, beautiful house, top amenities, privacy and serenity, easy access to tourist activities without the hassle and bustle of the tourist crowds at a resort. What’s more, the whales come in so close they sound like they're playing in the swimming pool during whale season, and you see sunsets all year round. Minutes drive to the best beaches (Mauna Kea and Hapuna) on the whole island. Resort amenities, restaurants, diving, snorkeling, tennis, golf and much more. About Julie

We are a family of four living in the San Francisco Bay Area with extended family in the midwest and overseas. We fell in love with the Big Island since our first trip there together over 20 years ago. Each time we came back, we realized more and more that we wanted to have a home here. We purchased this beautiful property in June of 2014, from a couple who built their dream house in 2007 and lived here for several years before making this home a vacation rental beloved by vacationers (There were 19 five-star reviews on VRBO.)

We can't wait to vacation here at our Kohala home each year. And we like the idea of sharing our home with folks who appreciate the beauty and charm of the Big Island, who honor family values and friendship, and who want to enjoy a special vacation. Whether it is for a celebration, a family reunion, or just a well-deserved reward to yourselves, we know you will love and treasure this place, and enjoy a vacation of a lifetime.

Julie purchased this house in 2014

Why Julie chose Kohala Coast

A dream place, facing the ocean, with seasons of green, blossoms of tropical paradise. You greet the sun in the morning, and see the sunset every night. You soak up the sunshine and swim in the moonlight, with ocean breeze telling a story and sound of the waves singing a lullaby. A dream home that connects with those who have come a long way, and know just how to enjoy and cherish.

What makes this house unique

Combining the convenience of a resort with the privacy of a luxurious home, this place is ideal for a large family get-together, a small corporate retreat, or two or three families coming together for a special vacation.

One unique additional benefit of this home is that the area is the best whale watching spot, because the water is deep in front of the house the whales come in very close. They will wake you up at night, with their talking and slapping of fins sounds like a door is slamming in the house. Laying by the pool feels like you are floating in the ocean. The diving and snorkeling out front is one of the best spots off the island.

Great time! Definitely "worth it"!

  • 5 of 5

Location is great, always sunny here! Incredible sunset views. Very quiet area. The house is well appointed with EVERYTHING you'll need. Amazing infinity pool where you can relax in during the day with endless ocean views, or at night watching the stars! Game room for the kids with a pool table and ping pong table.

Don't think twice! Book this house!!!

Simply the best!

  • 5 of 5

It would be difficult to truly describe our stay without repeating words like "spectacular" multiple times. From the owner to the management company...from the view on the lanai to the location of the house. It is a long trip out the pacific from Chicago, but this experience has triggered a need to be a repeat visitor to this house! Our family of four, plus two of our close friends had a run of the house for 8 days and after many votes, we agreed that time on the lanai or the pool area rated as our favorite way to spend time. I do need to be clear, that this "favorite" covers a multitude of activities. 1 - get up early with the sunrise peaking over the mountain behind the home which allows the first activity of the day to start - whale watching (in season) or the contest to find the first dolphin pod of the day. Special tip...watch for the excursion boats screaming out to the area directly in front of the house as they are spotting the activity to make sure their paying customers see wildlife. We got to see it nearly every day! 2 - grab or grill lunch and sit around the huge table - again - watch the ocean and just enjoy as the day starts to heat up. 3 - decide to forego any activity outside the house as it becomes clear that swimming in the infinity pool with the waves crashing 500 ft away is your best option. More than enough lounge chairs and towels to make it on par with any hotel you could have visited. 4 - watch the sunset from the comfort of the "living" area. Best direct view on the day ending...I may miss this the most. 5 - head back to your lounge chairs after dinner out and see if you get luckly enough to hear a whale passing so close to shore you can hear the breathing as he gently swims past the house. We did! I have never enjoyed an experience more where I could not see the event! 6 - grab a cocktail, sit back (in the same lounge chair in #3 and #5 above) look up and be amazed at the stars and contemplate life - we could not invented a better way to close the day.

So, we basically "rinsed and repeated" the lanai experiences above for most of the trip, because the house was that spectacular. Lunches to Hawi, Kona, etc, coffee to Waimea or Mauna Laua center, a wonderful full day volcano excursion rounded out the big activities. We also hit the beach, state parks, shopping at Kona and what we agreed was the best shaved ice in the strip center just a short mile trip from the house. Looking forward to becoming a repeat guest.

Amazing house for two families!

  • 5 of 5

This house was amazing! Perfect for our two families of 4 plus a nanny who traveled with us. Everyone had their own space, and we could have even fit a few more in. Julie has everything at this house that you will need to have a delightful vacation. Our favorite part of the home was the pool covered lanai/table area. Allowed to be in the sun or the shade and get to enjoy the unbelievable view.

This part of the big island is a little bit away from things, but we really loved the setting. Could spend days at the pool or nearby beaches, and take a daily adventure to Waimea, Hawi or even a day trip to the volcanoes or Hilo. I would highly recommend staying here and I am sure we will return! Thanks Julie!

Best vacation rental ever.

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time renting this house and we booked it for a third time while still enjoying this most recent vacation! The site of the home with its view of the ocean from the lanai and pool deck just can't be beat. We saw whales every day. The sound of the birds and rustling of the palm leaves are very soothing. The privacy of this Kohala coast development makes this home very quiet--no loud neighbors (there is construction nearby but it's not bothersome at all!). The house is fully kitted-out with everything you need. We have two families of 3 (sisters+husbands+1 child each) and the grandparents. The house is very large with plenty of room to retreat from others to read quietly, or to gather around the playroom for ping pong, pool or a movie. The owners have been extremely accommodating to feedback, and the manager of the property is top notch, very responsive if we had questions come up. HIGHLY recommend. Book far in advance--this place is also reasonably priced compared to other luxury properties on the Big Island.

A Holiday in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 10 (5 couples, ages ranging from mid 20's to late 30's) had the most fabulous time staying at this villa in early February. You really can't beat the breath taking views from the lanai. We spent the majority of our time either in the hot tub, pool, or on the lanai watching for whales throughout the day. It does get a little bright and warm at sunset when the sun is hitting that side of the villa, but the lanai has screens that you can lower to help shade the area. The villa was very well-furnished and we cooked for the majority of the week. There are several good restaurants and groceries stores within a 10-15 minute drive from the property. The villa is also very well laid out. None of us ever felt like we were on top of each other, we all had our own spaces to retreat to when we felt the need, but there was also great entertainment areas, inside and out, for when we ate, hung out, or played games as a group. Also, the house is located in a gated community so it was very nice and quiet, just isolated enough. I would also recommend a trip to Hapuna Beach, which is about a 10-15 minute drive. We didn't end up going until the end of our week visit (the villa was just that fabulous that we didn't feel a great need to leave) but wished we would've made the trip earlier. Hapuna is gorgeous and never felt crowded either of the two days we went.

Our group agreed that the next time we visited the Big Island, this is the only place we would stay at. Julie and Dani were both extremely responsive and wonderful to work with throughout the whole rental process. We had no problems during our stay and cannot wait to have a future reunion with our beautiful Kohala Waterfront paradise.

Breathtaking! Spectacular! Luxury at its Finest !

  • 5 of 5

Just spent the last week of 2016 at this home; 10 adults, 3 children. It was the absolute perfect place for us, in a perfect setting—a luxury gated neighbourhood overlooking the ocean with a 180-degree view of the water. We saw humpback whales every day and a few pods of dolphins.

All 5 bedrooms had king or queen beds, good mattresses. The 2 older children (9 and 7 yrs) slept on inflatable beds that self-inflated. All BR's have overhead fans—less need to run the AC. Everything was very clean. Good laundry facilities.

The lower level has a big entertainment room—TV, foosball, ping pong, pool table; badminton & croquet equipment. The upper level is where we spent most of our time. The open concept kitchen/DR/LR opens to a huge lanai. And the lanai looks down upon the infinity pool & spa on the lower level, where there were 8 chaise loungers to sit back and tan while watching the kids frolic in the pool.

This is the best equipped home we have ever rented, by far. The only thing we didn't have was a roaster for our Christmas turkey. Here are some highlights of the way this home is equipped:

-There are 3 or 4 sets of dishes, maybe even 5…we kept finding more!

-Plenty of beverage glasses & wine glasses

-6-burner gas stove; 2 ovens; built-in griddle!

-Large toaster oven and a microwave

-Wine chiller

-3 toasters! 2 blenders!

-Huge SubZero fridge with water dispenser & ice maker; backup fridge in garage. AND a small freezer beside the BBQ

-The kitchen had plenty of mixing bowls, storage containers, serving bowls & utensils, trays, sharp knives, lettuce spinner, colander, etc

-In addition to granite countertops in the kitchen, the island has a small sink and a butcher-block top that is very convenient for food preparation.

-The Miele dishwasher had lots of capacity and ran very quietly

At one end of the lanai is a massive 5-burner BBQ. The grills were quite rusty, top & bottom, and need to be replaced. But after giving them a good cleaning and oiling, we used it repeatedly. At the other end, there are plenty of comfy lounging chairs, chaises, and a couch to sit back and read a book while you watch the whales and sunsets. In the centre is a large dining table, where we ate all our meals. 3 large shades can be lowered electrically to keep the sun out of your eyes.

Double garage; lots of beach toys; a handful of beaches within 15m drive. If you’re looking for something that’ll make your jaw drop and give you some lifetime memories, this is your place!
