HOME OF THE HULA MOON in PUAKO

Stately and serene, HULA MOON sits on one of the most beautiful oceanfront properties in Puako. Each bedroom has a perfect ocean view. Located near the end of the road, you will enjoy year-round sunsets and privacy.

Puako has fresh clean air, blue skies and probably the best weather on the Big Island.

By the way, we do not allow weddings or any events at our home so please don't ask for an exception to this rule. Thanks!

We also have a 90 day cancellation policy. Please see my contract attached under rates. Tax ID # is: W25465279-01. TA-152-401-5104-01

As you enter through the gates, lush tropical plantings enhance the large courtyard swimming pool and generous lanai. The pool is usually between 78 and 88 degrees depending on the season. Designed so that every room has a magnificent view of the ocean, you will love the open and airy feeling of this 5000 square foot contemporary home.

We do not have Air Conditioning but the house is designed to catch the ocean breezes and all rooms have ceiling and floor fans.

HULA MOON was designed for gracious living in a relaxed atmosphere. Including the covered lanais you have almost 7000 square feet of indoor/outdoor living space. The two-story Great Room is very inviting with wonderful views of the ocean. The beautiful oceanside lanai has a dining table for 8, seating for an additional 10 guests, and a built-in wet bar.

Enjoy watching the humpback whales in season, spinner dolphins and green sea turtles from everywhere in the house. The Puako reef offers some of the best snorkeling and walk-in scuba diving on the Big Island.

We have four large bedrooms located at opposite ends of the house for maximum privacy. The Kona and Kohala suites are on the main floor and both have stunning ocean views and doors that open onto the lanai. Each suite has been beautifully appointed with brand new King mattresses and linens. Both have large bathrooms with a separate dressing area and a large open-air shower filled with tropical plants. These were remodeled in 2017.

The two spacious upstairs bedrooms have expansive ocean views and a private lanai that runs the length of the house. The Aloha suite has a new King bed and a punee (Hawaiian day bed) for relaxing. The Turtle suite has new Twin beds (that can be made into a KING Bed) and a daybed . The Turtle suite is a great room choice for the kids or for parents with a couple of children. Of course, it is also perfect for a couple or for several friends to share. Both upstairs bedrooms have private bathrooms with large walk-in showers. The bathrooms were completely remodeled in late 2015.

Each bedroom has a TV/DVD player, There are 5 televisions with premium cable channels throughout the house. The office TV is only for viewing DVD movies and we have a large selection in the Living room cabinets.

There are ceiling fans, portable fans and louvered windows in every room. If you leave the louvers and screened doors open it remains cool and comfortable and every bed has a blanket plus a quilt or comforter which guests often need at night.

If you have business to attend to, we have a great Wi-Fi connection, and several work stations. The upstairs double office has a printer that you are welcome to use. There is paper and spare ink in the drawer. There is a punee (Hawaiian lounging bed) for relaxing. This can sleep an adult but let us know well in advance if this is needed.

Daily housekeeping, private yoga lessons, in-home massage, kayak rentals, and more can be arranged through our concierge. Just ask and we will do our best to help you make the arrangements for your perfect Puako experience!

About Gail (owner) Niki Christian (manager)

I came to Puako 30 years ago. The homes are larger now, but the community retains its laid-back friendly atmosphere. There is something magical about the Big Island and if you spend a little while in Puako you will feel the 'mana' and aloha spirit of this special location.

Gail (owner) Niki Christian (manager) purchased this estate in 2010

Why Gail (owner) Niki Christian (manager) chose Puako

This is a beautiful home. Every bedroom and living space has a fabulous ocean view and we have excellent cross ventilation throughout. The pool area is protected so it is warm and sunny. We are not located near a public beach access so our house is very private and more secure.

What makes this estate unique

Puako has the finest sunny and dry climate year round. The reef is healthy and wonderful.

Our home was built so that every bedroom has a gorgeous ocean view. The home is perfect for four couples or for a large family group. There is almost 7000 sq. ft. of indoor/outdoor living so you can always find a private place to relax. We enjoy year-round sunsets and quiet friendly neighbors.

We swim in front of the house with manta rays, and dolphins, and buy fresh fish directly from the fishermen at the nearby harbor. We get freshly baked bread and organic produce at the Waimea farmers' market and buy orchid plants and fresh papayas from a woman down the road.

Home of the Hula Moon will be your own private paradise during your visit to the Big Island. Join our ohana of happy guests.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We agree with all of the other comments in this book- a very special place in paradise! Just perfect for us and our two grandsons. Lots of magic in and around your lovely home. Best wishes to you-

Best Vacation Ever!

  • 5 of 5

I honestly cannot imagine a better spot for our vacation. It is just a little slice of heaven. The green sea turtles, the peace and quiet, the GORGEOUS house, the perfectly appointed kitchen, Niki's help with everything under the sun, all of it was simply perfect. Our family of 7 (ages 10 to 73) all voted this our favorite spot on earth. We had a hard time motivating to go sight seeing because it was just so beautiful and relaxing on the back porch of Hula Moon. For those of you considering a resort - we did the price comparison - for 2 suites at the closest resort (Fairmont Orchid) - you pay more per night than for this perfect, private home! And you don't get privacy or the concierge service that Hula Moon gives you! We snorkeled, waded in the water while sea turtles gracefully swam by, enjoyed nightly dinners of fresh fish on the porch, watched the most beautiful sunsets you can imagine, traveled up to Waimea for shopping, horse-back riding, scenic views, etc. Went down into Kona for a fishing and snorkel charter. Traveled over to Pololu Valley for a hike to a black sand beach that was breathtaking. But mostly we turned off our phones and computers and read good old fashioned books (like with real paper and everything!) on the porch.

A few tips: Don't bother bringing water shoes - hula moon has every size and the kind you need. Stop at the grocery stores in Kona or get groceries delivered and plan to eat meals in. The BBQ place in Waimea (The fish and the hog) is excellent and a great choice to pick up and bring home if you don't want to cook. Manta Adventures is an amazing charter and the nicest people (say hi to Captain Bill for us!). If you walk down to the beach access just to the north of the house there is a little lagoon formed by the lava rocks that is a great snorkel spot.

Gail - thank you for opening your home for us. We feel incredibly lucky to have found this place. We sincerely hope to be back soon!

Home of the Hula Moon is an exceptional house!

  • 5 of 5

Home of the Hula Moon has the Pacific Ocean on one side and a wonderfully refreshing swimming pool on the other side, the best of both worlds! Its location in the small community of Puako is ideal, close to several shopping areas and resorts. The house itself is in many ways a small art museum with original paintings and many Hawaiian artifacts resulting in a speedy immersion into the aloha lifestyle . It's kitchen and pantry are extremely well equipped. The 4 bedroom suites accommodated our extended family very well and provided much appreciated private space for all. Beach 69 was a favorite destination, as were exploring the reefs, the various farmer's markets, restaurants in Waimea, horseback riding in the Waipio Valley, paddle boarding , bicycling and so much more. We were grateful that the volcano's effects did not reach the area. We all came back with healthy tans, having captured the aloha spirit!

Dream come true --

  • 5 of 5

There isn't one thing we could find to not love our stay at Hula Moon. Our entire family (5 adults and 4 college-age grandkids) visited Hawaii for the first time. We LOVED our home. We would sitesee during the day but were always eager to get back to be by the pool and/or watch the turtles oceanside. It was great waking in the morning, sitting on the back deck watching the tide come in and drinking a cup of coffee. The home itself was very comfortable with high-end decor. It was located on a quiet road on a secluded lot. The grandkids enjoyed their getaway on the upper deck to read and/or be on their phones! We wouldn't hesitate to go back to Hula Moon. We are so grateful that Gail makes it available for others, like us, to enjoy. The memories will be with us forever.

Beautiful property!

  • 5 of 5

This home is beautiful with an amazing front and backyard. Very family friendly with the layout of 4 master suites. Everyone had their space, but most of the time we were all together in all the different options of common areas. The pool was great for the kids and the view from the lanai was so serene and private. Would definitely recommend this home to anyone looking for a relaxing stay on the big island. We didn’t really leave because everything we needed was right at the house, whales and turtles included!! Thanks for the wonderful family vacation!

This was the best vacation property we have ever rented!

  • 5 of 5

Over the past 40 years we have visited Hawaii many times with both family and friends. We have almost always rented prime ocean front properties. The Hula Moon is clearly the best we have stayed in. It is in pristine condition, constructed with the finest materials and equipped with the most complete accessories we have ever seen. No shoes are allowed inside the house and it deserves it! We were a party of 4 couples aged from 20 to 66. At the end of our 7 days at Hula Moon we were sad to say goodbye to both Hawaii and this great home. We all want to come back to both. The home has 4 spacious bedroom suites & baths (2 up & 2 down), all with ocean views and sliding doors to covered decks. The showers for the two downstairs suites are amazing (the size of a small living room)! All the bedrooms are well separated from each other which provides excellent private space. There is even an ocean view office if you need it. The front entry is a gated courtyard with a beautiful pool. The back of the home overlooks the ocean with distant views of Maui. It is not on a sandy beach but just 5 minutes away is Hapuna Beach which is one of the best beaches we have ever encountered and is all white sand with waves for the entire family young to old and without any rocks. The home has tons of snorkel equipment and boogie boards. Everyday we saw and walked among lots of turtles which climb out of the water and sleep just 20 yards from the back yard. Super peaceful place. We cooked at home almost every night and tried to find something the kitchen didn't have to work with. Didn't happen! It's got everything. The big resorts are just 5 to 10 minutes away if you need to go out. A nice little market that carries essentials is just down the street from the house. Aloha!

Puako is quite possibly the sunniest spot on the Big Island. Blessed with a dry climate and pristine water, Puako remains a top destination for travellers seeking a perfect beach location. The Puako reef is alive with fish, green sea turtles, eagle and manta rays, dolphins, and whales during the winter season. Early Polynesians considered it a spot with strong 'mana' or spirit, and carved numerous petroglyphs in the fields near our home. Surfers love the winter surf at nearby Paniau, a five minute walk from our home, and children will love the tide pools where the sea turtles rest each evening. Puako is a family neighborhood which was originally homesteaded in the 1950's. The Aloha Spirit is strong and you will love being part of this small friendly community. Puako is a short 25 minute drive north of the KONA Airport. Exclusive resorts with spas, restaurants, tennis and golf courses are a 10 minute drive from Puako. Relax or do everything!

Other Activities: Walk-in scuba diving is a 5 minute walk from our home.

Great snorkeling on the Puako Reef.

Hiking trails.

Lovely sandy beaches nearby.

Yoga/massage/spa services nearby.

Golf: Beautiful golf courses at the Mauna Kea and Mauna Lani and other nearby resorts that are a ten minute drive from here.
