About susan huskey

We fell in love with this setting and location 28 years ago and have created a family retreat with a long list of activities available right on the property. Starvation Flats Ranch was named during the gold mining days of the mid 1800's, historic to the area. There are still mine sites you can visit locally.

Why susan huskey chose Big Bear Lake

You won't find this open forested acreage and setting elsewhere this close to all the fun activities you come to the mountains to enjoy.

What makes this house unique

Picture perfect mountain setting, hundreds of majestic pines, lots of privacy and open acreage that is yours alone to enjoy! About a mile to Snow Summit and Bear Mountain Ski Resorts and walking distance to the lake. You will feel like this is your own private retreat, yet close to many popular restaurants. Favorite activities on the property include horseshoes, basketball, volleyball, badminton, hiking through the adjacent eagle habitat, sledding, or just nestling in one of the hammocks or watching the snow fall from the living room window seat. Huge river rock fireplace adds ambiance to this lovely home. Two balconies off each upstairs bedroom as well as plenty of ground floor deck to accommodate your group. Dual barbeques (infrared and smoker) make outdoor meals a real treat. After a day on the lake or at the ski resorts, relax in the outdoor spa while stargazing.

We loved Starvation Flats!

This is a little late, but I found this place while looking for wedding locations for my now husband and me. It was beautiful, so I thought I would reach out as a possible venue! From the very beginning, Ken and Susie were a delight to work with. They were always prompt in getting back to me, so nice, and the house is amazing. It fit my bridesmaids, family and friends very easily. Everyone felt right at home. Of course, the property is amazingly beautiful. We had about 160 people out for our wedding, and all the guests kept telling us how it was the perfect location. Ken and Susie helped so much! They strung up lights and even created wooden signs for us to use.

I can't wait to come back here with my husband and remember all the wonderful memories. Thank you so much!!

Starvation Flats!

  • 5 of 5

"My girlfriends and I gathered at the 'ranch' in Big Bear Lake for our annual getaway from the hustle and bustle of life. We designed the weekend around the annual local Home Tour. Although there are many of our favorite restaurants nearby, we chose to enjoy all our meals on the wrap around decks in the forest of pine trees. The open kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our meals and plenty of seating at an oversized table for nighttime board games. It was easy to unwind from our busy days in the spacious living room by the wood burning fireplace or watch movies on the big flat screen. My favorite spot was the oversized window seat with a view of the wide open forest. We truly felt the peace and tranquility of the mountains, with the reds and yellows in the changing autumn trees. The owners were very helpful in steering us to local events and activities of interest. We all returned home renewed and refreshed, with wonderful memories, planning our return next year for an even longer stay!"

This cabin is to die for! Our family had such an amazing time there! So many outdoor activities for the entire family. Gorgeous views, very comfortable house, fireplace & outdoor spa. Conveniently located near many forested areas, hiking trails, grocery stores, and shopping areas. My nephews had such a great time playing horseshoes and volleyball. We will definitely be back!

Best Place Ever!!!

  • 5 of 5

From the moment I saw the ad for Starvation Flats Ranch, I had a good feeling about the place. It looked perfect for our retreat. We were looking for a space that could comfortably sleep at least 12 and we ended up with 16 guests who all slept super comfortably. We loved the hot tub, the star gazing, local trails, location, and the space was ideal for everyone to get exactly what they needed on their retreat. We even had room for yoga classes, spent some time at a lake nearby, and there were many local trails to choose from. The owners were a delight to work with, so sweet, caring, and easy. I would highly recommend this space to anyone who is looking to accommodate a small to medium sized group for a magical Big Bear experience.

Starvation Flats Ranch was a HOMERUN!! (my adult age 20's children told me) My daughters said the pictures do not give it justice, it is even more beautiful. We have rented many Big Bear homes over the past 20+ years, the lot is HUGE! The owner met us for our arrival, and showed us the property. (by the way first time this has ever happen, a plus) This trip included husband & myself, my 4 adult children (22-32) and , my 3 grandchildren, son in law, sisters family (5 & 21), and a 16 year old nephew. We were fortunate to have snow and the backyard became snow play area for everyone from age 9 mo. - 52. The boys went on hike on the adjacent hill next to the property. The kitchen area was very spacious and we were able to cook for 16 people. At night , the living room area became game night (something that does not occur at home), board games, pool table and card games. The bedrooms are very spacious, more then enough room for our family. Everything you need is available (towels, blankets, washer & dryer etc.). I plan these trips for 2 time and for my children & now grandchildren and to build memories HOMERUN! We will definitely be back next year.

Owner's Response: Your review brought happy tears to our eyes since it is obvious that you enjoyed the property precisely as we have for some 30 years. Couldn't help but notice your multiple use of 'family' in your review. We designed this property for our family and others like yours to enjoy. Years ago we purchased the surrounding forest so our children and grandchildren would have a safe place to play and explore. It's really special having so much open forest with majestic pine trees and wildlife to experience. We love families with all their smiling faces and children erupting with laughter and joy. Incidentally, every year we try to make a significant improvement. Last year we installed two new barbeques/smoker and this week we are installing a new family friendly hot tub/spa. Lots of snow this season. Come to Starvation Flats Ranch and see for yourself why families return year after year. Ken and Susan, owners

Great Thanksgiving Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Starvation Flats Ranch over the Thanksgiving holiday and had a wonderful time. Our group ages ranged from 6 years old to 72 years old and there was something for everyone, even the 20somethings had fun.

The home is well stocked with anything and everything you could need/want. I was a little worried because we were cooking our entire Thanksgiving dinner up there, but everything worked out great and there were plenty of pans, utensils, etc. We even set a lovely table for our group, using the "cabin-ish" designed plates. We all loved the huge table for game playing, as well as dining all together. The pool table was a hit also. The sleeping arrangements easily accommodated our group, especially the Bunk House, which has it's own private bathroom. It was very comfortable and cozy - we weren't tripping over each other, which was a huge plus.

We didn't get any snow, which was OK because it allowed us to use the horseshoe pit, dart board and the tire swing. It was an easy walk to the lake and the neighborhood itself was great to walk around. Was a short drive to the Village, where we saw the arrival of Santa and the tree lighting and there was plenty of shopping.

Susan was great to work with, and quickly answered all my questions.

I would definitely recommend this property and I can see our family returning to Starvation Flats Ranch - hopefully very soon.
