About susan huskey
We fell in love with this setting and location 29 years ago and have created a family retreat with a long list of activities available right on the property. Starvation Flats Ranch was named during the gold mining days of the mid 1800's, historic to the area. There are still mine sites you can visit locally.
susan huskey purchased this House in 1988
Why susan huskey chose Fox Farm
You won't find this open forested acreage and setting elsewhere this close to all the fun activities you come to the mountains to enjoy.
What makes this House unique
Picture perfect mountain setting, hundreds of majestic pines, lots of privacy and open acreage that is yours alone to enjoy! About a mile to Snow Summit and Bear Mountain Ski Resorts and walking distance to the lake. You will feel like this is your own private retreat, yet close to many popular restaurants. Favorite activities on the property include horseshoes, basketball, volleyball, badminton, hiking through the adjacent eagle habitat, sledding, or just nestling in one of the hammocks or watching the snow fall from the living room window seat. Huge river rock fireplace adds ambiance to this lovely home. Two balconies off each upstairs bedroom as well as plenty of ground floor deck to accommodate your group. Dual barbeques (infrared and smoker) make outdoor meals a real treat. After a day on the lake or at the ski resorts, relax in the outdoor spa while stargazing.

Large, yet cozy, super-stocked Big Bear rental with BEAUTIFUL LAND!
This summer, our group of 16 stayed at the Starvation Flats Ranch for the second time. It's always a pleasure to deal with Susan, the owner of the ranch. She makes you feel like family and greets you upon arrival to quickly fill you in on the home, then leaves you to enjoy your private, peaceful stay. We will go back again next summer, as the home is everything you'd want in a Big Bear vacation rental at a VERY reasonable price. It's very close to town, but also in the forest, where you feel like you are on a nature retreat due to the extremely large property and picturesque setting.
There are many things to do outdoors, such as corn hole (we had a tournament), horseshoes, volleyball, basketball, etc. I especially like the little outdoor seating groups, benches, hammocks, oversized-swing, vintage wagon, etc. The neighborhood is extremely quiet and you can mostly hear songbirds during the day and owls at night. Most of the time, it is silent outside. So much quieter than home!
Inside, the home is very well-kept, with plenty of seating (large couches and rocking chairs), more beds than you'll need, and entertainment for a large group, including flat screen TVs and a nice pool table next to a beautiful window seat. The home is much more spacious than it appears in the VRBO photos. All 16 of us could be in the living room at one time without any crowding. And for your convenience, every closet is filled with items you might need, such as extra bedding, towels, games, books, cards, videos, kitchenware, cooking utensils, silverware, condiments, spices and much, much more. Everything in the kitchen works extremely well, including the oversized professional stove and oven. It bakes four trays of enchiladas at once with room to spare. We made our meals for 16 in the house (but there are restaurants nearby), and we always had EVERY item we needed, even colanders and tongs, spatulas, utensils and supplies that many rentals overlook. Easy cooking!
At night, the large property is great for the kids to play flashlight hide and seek without entering the properties nearby. That was the main night activity this past trip, even though we have BIG kids now (junior high and high school). Great place for getting kids off their cell phones, although there is WIFI too, if you want it.
Don't forget to visit the lake and take a hike on the nearby trail. What a fun and relaxing vacation rental! You'll want to stay more nights than you book!
The cabin is so cute and cozy. My family loved it. We had a 30% chance of snow but it ended up snowing all night. We woke up to a winter wonderland. We also saw a lot of wildlife in the evening bunnies, coyotes it was a lot of fun for the kiddos. The kitchen is fully equipped and we used the gas grill. There was a TV and DVD player but we hardly used it. We had a lot of fun using the board games and cards. Mr. and Mrs. Huskey were very welcoming and were available for us if we needed them. I will definitely be staying here with my family again. Thanks for sharing your home with us!
Great location, great hosts, spacious & clean home
The Huskey's are wonderful hosts. The house & property were charming and clean, and we enjoyed every minute of our stay. The location was very nice with plenty of things to do and it's located in a nice neighborhood. We look forward to staying here again. Truly a dream stay!
We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay! We absolutely love it when another family experiences the same thrill and fun that we do. This is why we bought the lots around us so our kids would have a beautiful open forest to explore, enjoy, and stretch their imaginations. While our vegetable garden won't be producing this winter, we suggest that you bring the family up for the magic winter wonderland the ranch transitions to, once the snow falls. Looking forward to seeing you and your extended family again.
PERFECT MOUNTAIN GETAWAY!
My family and I have stayed at Starvation Flats Ranch on numerous occasions over the last decade, both summer and winter. We keep coming back because this property is the way Big Bear should be; family friendly, private, with wide open spaces. It is conveniently located to everything Big Bear has to offer: the lake, skiing, sledding, hiking, or just playing in the snow in the back yard. My children have even panned for gold in the seasonal stream that runs behind the house. While they are playing horseshoes, volleyball, basketball, or darts, I like to curl up in one of the hammocks and dive into a good book. The house is warm, inviting, and unpretentious. The property includes acreage all of which is nearly level for easy access and sprinkled with majestic pine trees.
Just learned that another bathroom has been added and the kitchen has been remodeled, including a dishwasher which I love! Yeah!
The owners, Susie & Ken, are the nicest people you will ever meet and will go out of their way to insure that your visit is what you expected.
We all look forward to getting back to our favorite mountain retreat.
Owners were very rude to me
The first night we were at the house was great, the second night was a different story all together. I received a call from the owner about the amount of cars I had on the property. We had anticipated 4 cars but some people in my group could not car pool so we had 6 cars. The owner then told me that I was in violation of the contract and threatened to evict me for going over the number of cars (the website says they have plenty of room for 8 cars and they have a sign posted on the property that says max 8 cars). After talking about the number of cars, the owner then repeatedly asked me about the number of people. I repeatedly told him that I had only 12 people, yet he felt in necessary to continue interrogating me about it. One of my guest was at the grille when enjoying an e-cig when the property manager decided to stop by (unannounced to spy on us), so the owner questioned me about this as well. He ended that part of the conversation with a vulgar comment that I really did not enjoy.
Just so everyone is aware, I contacted the owners later to express all of these comments and give them a chance to make it right prior to writing this review. During that email conversation, they decided to call me a liar about the vulgar language and made the matter worse for me.
I hope nobody else ever has to receive the same treatment I did from these people, it was very upsetting.
A small portion of your security deposit was withheld due to the poor condition the house was left in ... as itemized in our email to you ... and photographed for verification. Your contract specified the house was to be left in a clean and tidy condition as it was upon your arrival, and it was not. As such, additional cleaning fees were incurred and charged against your deposit.
As for the number of vehicles, you specified in your contract that 4 vehicles would be on the premises. Our property manager did a drive by and counted 2 additional vehicles ... which is clearly a red flag that we may be in violation of the city-imposed restrictions on the number of overnight guests ... which could lead to fines, guest eviction ... and even the loss of our license. However, because we took your word regarding the number of guests claimed, no further action was taken. The property manager also observed what appeared to be people smoking on the property which is not only a violation of our rental agreement and city required code of conduct, but also poses a serious threat to our property and that of our neighbors in this heavily forested mountain community. As such, you were called to verify that we were in compliance and there was no undue fire hazard present.
We treat all of our guests with courtesy and respect ... which partially accounts for why some 90% of our guests are return visitors and in which we take a great deal of pride.
Finally, you accused us of unfairly charging you extra tax beyond that required by the city. The city requires an 8% TOT tax and a 3% TBID tax for a total of 11% which is precisely what you were charged.
Sorry you were disappointed; we were, too.
We went with our group of 15 friends and the place was awesome. We probably could have comfortably slept about 5 more people. We went during the winter and it is VERY close to both Big Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. The owners are also very nice and responded to every question I had. Overall--such a great time at this house.
We are delighted that you and your friends had such an awesome stay at our family home ... that makes renting our property a joy to get feedback like yours! We, too, love the serenity and privacy of our little ranch nestled among the pine trees. Thanks for leaving our place in great shape and we'll look forward to seeing you again. Let is snow, let it snow, let it snow!
