About susan huskey

We fell in love with this setting and location 28 years ago and have created a family retreat with a long list of activities available right on the property. Starvation Flats Ranch was named during the gold mining days of the mid 1800's, historic to the area. There are still mine sites you can visit locally.

susan huskey purchased this house in 1988

Why susan huskey chose Big Bear Lake

You won't find this open forested acreage and setting elsewhere this close to all the fun activities you come to the mountains to enjoy.

What makes this house unique

Picture perfect mountain setting, hundreds of majestic pines, lots of privacy and open acreage that is yours alone to enjoy! About a mile to Snow Summit and Bear Mountain Ski Resorts and walking distance to the lake. You will feel like this is your own private retreat, yet close to many popular restaurants. Favorite activities on the property include horseshoes, basketball, volleyball, badminton, hiking through the adjacent eagle habitat, sledding, or just nestling in one of the hammocks or watching the snow fall from the living room window seat. Huge river rock fireplace adds ambiance to this lovely home. Two balconies off each upstairs bedroom as well as plenty of ground floor deck to accommodate your group. Dual barbeques (infrared and smoker) make outdoor meals a real treat. After a day on the lake or at the ski resorts, relax in the outdoor spa while stargazing.

Owners were very rude to me

  • 1 of 5

The first night we were at the house was great, the second night was a different story all together. I received a call from the owner about the amount of cars I had on the property. We had anticipated 4 cars but some people in my group could not car pool so we had 6 cars. The owner then told me that I was in violation of the contract and threatened to evict me for going over the number of cars (the website says they have plenty of room for 8 cars and they have a sign posted on the property that says max 8 cars). After talking about the number of cars, the owner then repeatedly asked me about the number of people. I repeatedly told him that I had only 12 people, yet he felt in necessary to continue interrogating me about it. One of my guest was at the grille when enjoying an e-cig when the property manager decided to stop by (unannounced to spy on us), so the owner questioned me about this as well. He ended that part of the conversation with a vulgar comment that I really did not enjoy.

Just so everyone is aware, I contacted the owners later to express all of these comments and give them a chance to make it right prior to writing this review. During that email conversation, they decided to call me a liar about the vulgar language and made the matter worse for me.

I hope nobody else ever has to receive the same treatment I did from these people, it was very upsetting.

Owner's Response: A small portion of your security deposit was withheld due to the poor condition the house was left in ... as itemized in our email to you ... and photographed for verification. Your contract specified the house was to be left in a clean and tidy condition as it was upon your arrival, and it was not. As such, additional cleaning fees were incurred and charged against your deposit. As for the number of vehicles, you specified in your contract that 4 vehicles would be on the premises. Our property manager did a drive by and counted 2 additional vehicles ... which is clearly a red flag that we may be in violation of the city-imposed restrictions on the number of overnight guests ... which could lead to fines, guest eviction ... and even the loss of our license. However, because we took your word regarding the number of guests claimed, no further action was taken. The property manager also observed what appeared to be people smoking on the property which is not only a violation of our rental agreement and city required code of conduct, but also poses a serious threat to our property and that of our neighbors in this heavily forested mountain community. As such, you were called to verify that we were in compliance and there was no undue fire hazard present. We treat all of our guests with courtesy and respect ... which partially accounts for why some 90% of our guests are return visitors and in which we take a great deal of pride. Finally, you accused us of unfairly charging you extra tax beyond that required by the city. The city requires an 8% TOT tax and a 3% TBID tax for a total of 11% which is precisely what you were charged. Sorry you were disappointed; we were, too.

Great Place

  • 5 of 5

We went with our group of 15 friends and the place was awesome. We probably could have comfortably slept about 5 more people. We went during the winter and it is VERY close to both Big Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. The owners are also very nice and responded to every question I had. Overall--such a great time at this house.

Owner's Response: We are delighted that you and your friends had such an awesome stay at our family home ... that makes renting our property a joy to get feedback like yours! We, too, love the serenity and privacy of our little ranch nestled among the pine trees. Thanks for leaving our place in great shape and we'll look forward to seeing you again. Let is snow, let it snow, let it snow!

I have never stayed at a place like this. It had everything for our entire family to be able to relax and enjoy being together. My 5 kids (and 3 spouses) and 5 of my 6 grandkids joined my husband and I up there for a memorable weekend.

The house was ready for our arrival with everything we needed, from the spa heated to the driveway plowed. Between enjoying the spa in the snow, the pool table, and the board games available to us, we didn't even need to go into town, the cabin had it all. The cabin was close enough to the town that a couple of my kids went into town for a few extra supplies and to walk around for a bit, but most of us just stayed there enjoying ourselves there at the cabin.

They even had snow shovels so my son-in-law was able to build a snow ramp for our sleds right in the front yard.

The swing was sturdy enough for even the adults to use and glide through the flakes of snow.

The cabin was warm enough for all of us, from my 1 year old grandson to my husband and I (in our late 50s).

The Huskey's were available to answer any questions and we felt we had any support we needed.

I'm looking forward to going back again

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay. This is exactly how we intend our home to be experienced. This is our family home where we raised our children. The privacy and the setting are truly amazing which is partially the result of our acquiring the adjacent acreage. Everything about this property lends itself to an authentic Big Bear getaway. Big Bear is truly a year-round resort with spectacular skiing and snowboarding in the winter, boating, fishing, and hiking in the summer, fall colors, and spring flowers. We are so blessed to be surrounded by such natural beauty.

We loved Starvation Flats!

  • 5 of 5

This is a little late, but I found this place while looking for wedding locations for my now husband and me. It was beautiful, so I thought I would reach out as a possible venue! From the very beginning, Ken and Susie were a delight to work with. They were always prompt in getting back to me, so nice, and the house is amazing. It fit my bridesmaids, family and friends very easily. Everyone felt right at home. Of course, the property is amazingly beautiful. We had about 160 people out for our wedding, and all the guests kept telling us how it was the perfect location. Ken and Susie helped so much! They strung up lights and even created wooden signs for us to use.

I can't wait to come back here with my husband and remember all the wonderful memories. Thank you so much!!

Starvation Flats!

  • 5 of 5

"My girlfriends and I gathered at the 'ranch' in Big Bear Lake for our annual getaway from the hustle and bustle of life. We designed the weekend around the annual local Home Tour. Although there are many of our favorite restaurants nearby, we chose to enjoy all our meals on the wrap around decks in the forest of pine trees. The open kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our meals and plenty of seating at an oversized table for nighttime board games. It was easy to unwind from our busy days in the spacious living room by the wood burning fireplace or watch movies on the big flat screen. My favorite spot was the oversized window seat with a view of the wide open forest. We truly felt the peace and tranquility of the mountains, with the reds and yellows in the changing autumn trees. The owners were very helpful in steering us to local events and activities of interest. We all returned home renewed and refreshed, with wonderful memories, planning our return next year for an even longer stay!"
