The King's Cottage - ~A~ Very Quiet Northwoods Retreat

Bedrooms 2
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

In a time when many vacation places are over-built and overcrowded, The King's Cottage offers the perfect retreat amid the quiet of the beautiful North Woods. The King's Cottage is built on 80 wooded acres crossed by nature trails and enclosing two spring-fed lakes. The modern, wood-paneled cabin sleeps four comfortably in its two bedrooms, but the party can be larger if a couple of you want to camp on the campsite beside the smaller lake.

There is enough right on the property to fill your day. If you have brought some reading matter you may just feel like relaxing in the rocking chairs on the screened porch. You may want to fish for bluegill and bass from a rowboat on the smaller lake, or from a canoe on the larger one. You may want to walk through the woods or sit quietly on the overlook bench. Keep your eyes open for wildlife - deer, coyote, red fox, beaver, and bear, as well as grouse and many other kinds of birds, call this home! In the winter there's cross-country skiing.

Off the property, half a mile's walk will take you to Bearskin Creek for trout fishing, or the Bearskin Bike Trail. The Pinewood Country Club, with its eighteen-hole golf course and Dinner Theatre, is two miles away. The shops and restaurants of Minocqua, Tomahawk and Rhinelander are about 15 miles away in various directions. As one of our satisfied guests put it, 'This is a great place to get away from it all and still be able to get back.

The property is located equidistant from Minocqua, Rhinelander and Tomahawk. It abuts the Bearskin

State Bike Trail. It is near the American Legend State Forest and Willow Flowage(over 6000 acre Canadian wilderness like lake with nearly 100 miles of sand beach and wooded shoreline).

Very wilderness

  • 4 of 5

I went for peace and quiet and got it. I enjoyed hiking the trails. The front lake was real beautiful in the morning and listening to nature. I couldn't find the back lake at first, but did after I called Frank. It too was beautiful. The cabin was nice and cozy.

Small, rustic and delightful

  • 5 of 5

My wife, myself, our 9 year old granddaughter and 95 pound Golden Doodle spent four nights at King's Cottage and had a great time. For my granddaughter, the main attraction was the lake which is only about one-quarter mile from the cottage. A little cold but she overcame that in minutes. She is an excellent swimmer (there is no beach or place to wade) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Wally, our dog, isn't really a swimmer and would have preferred a beach for wading. There are places to walk nearby, particularly the DNR trail that is about one-half mile away. Everyone had a great time. I should make it clear that this is a small cottage without a great deal of room. However, it was certainly big enough for us and we plan on a return trip at some point reasonably soon.

Amazing with a small glitch

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay! The cabin was cozy and clean. The location could not have been more perfect! Richard was very helpful and navigated us to the 2nd lake over the phone as we had issues finding it (city folls). The only small complaint we have is the pier at the lake. It is falling apart and it was pretty unsafe. The thing would literally lift when someone would try to get out of the lake. Overall we would absolutely return! Thank you So much!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review. I talked to my maintenance man and he indicated that all but he last 20 feet of the pier has been replaced with a new pier. He has been working around guests(we have been busy and he does not want to disturb them). The final 20 feet will be installed soon. Best wishes! Richard

Rustic, quiet getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Four of us stayed in the cottage and two others joined us camping. Overall, we had a great 3 nights at this property! If you're looking for rustic and quiet and plan to spend the majority of your time outdoors, I'd highly recommend this cottage. The cottage was big enough to provide beds, a small kitchen and bathroom yet kept us outdoors most of the time because of the size, which is exactly what we wanted. The amenities such as the row boat, canoe, firepit, grill and lakes were an added bonus!

Secluded cabin but property is overgrown and hard to thoroughly enjoy

  • 3 of 5

While we really enjoyed our stay here, we felt like the description and pictures do not match its current state. One of the main reasons we rented this place was because of the lake view/access and the hiking trails. One of the pictures in this rental post shows that we can see the lake from where top of the hill where the firepit, however, we could not. Also, to get to the front lake, the trail is severely overgrown and very narrow with lots of poison ivy and the dock when you get closer needs a lot of repair. It is actually quiet dangerous, especially if you have kids as its mostly just pallets set on top of the old dock boards. We also couldn't find the back lake or any trails other than the main "road" that leads towards the back of the property.

The cabin itself worked well for the two of us and our dogs. I think if the property was cleaned up and maintained, I would definitely consider coming back and recommending it to friends, however, in its current state, I would not.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. I am glad you enjoyed the cottage. I am sorry you did not find the 80 acres to your liking. I believe that the pictures accurately reflect the woods and lakes. I am sorry you were unable to find the back lake nor the lookout bench views depicted in the photos. Both are quite spectacular. Due to high water this spring, we did lay some pallets on top of the pier to the front lake to keep our guests feet dry. We have purchased a new pier which is being installed. There is NO poison ivy on the trails. I have a degree in biology and can assure you that you misidentified a different plant. If the property seemed overgrown to you, I apologize. We consciously chose to keep it in its natural state, and try to reach a delicate balance, between cutting down hundred year old trees and opening up the view from the cottage. It has become on issue of friendly debate among our guests over the years. The cottage is not for everyone. If you want a Montana log home, mowed yard and paved hiking trails, this cottage is not for you. It is a cabin in the woods. But to those who want to enjoy its natural beauty and diversity of plants and animals, seclusion and quiet, it offers a hard to find northwoods wilderness experience. Best wishes, Richard

Great Get Away

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing the cabin with us. The cabin offers everything that is "needed" and more! Netflix came in handy at night. Would be nice to have local news...the radio helped with that.

The dogs loved running the land and drinking from the lakes (they are not swimmers). They were exhausted every night. Nice trails! We seen birds, turkey and deer. Ticks were abundant too! Check yourself and your pups!

I would suggest a new broom to help clean thoroughly. The hot and cold handles on the kitchen sink are switched around too, this was fine once we figured it out :)

Overall a great get away!

Thank you!!

The wilderness setting of our property offers artists and photographers an unparralel viewing experience. You will see pristene lakes that are still in their natural state. Few of these lakes still exist today in northern Wisconsin. Wildwood Wildlife Park is a great place to bring the entire family! Kids will enjoy looking and learning about a variety of animals. They even have a petting zoo! This park is located 2 miles west of Minocqua on Highway 70. Holiday Acres boasts 3 go cart tracks, miniature golf, pony rides and horseback riding! It is located at 7994 Hwy 51 S. in Minocqua. for reservations call (715) 356-4400. The Pinewood golf course is conveniently located 2 miles to the northwest of our property. The willow flowage and American Legion Forest are both located within 6 miles of our property.
