About Dan Heard

Kelly and I are happily married with 4 kids and have spent many happy summers in Rocky Mountain National Park – going back to 1993. We usually stayed at the YMCA and we would often dream of having a cabin right on the property there.

Dan Heard purchased this house in 2014

Why Dan Heard chose Front Range

This cabin’s property shares the Wind River, and we border the YMCA property, so we’ve achieved our dream. This home is also special to us because within 10 minutes you can hike right into the Park without getting in your car. The back of the cabin, especially the master bedroom balcony, gives a nice view of Mt Ypsilon.

What makes this house unique

Getting in and out year-round is achieved because we are on Highway 66, also called Tunnel Road, but this is not a “through” road – it ends about 500 yards past our property, so the traffic is minimal.

Such a beautiful setting, well-suited for 3 families.

We loved the house, inside and out! It was well-supplied with everything we needed as a family of 12, ranging from 1 great-grandma (thank you for the ramp), 2 grandparents, 4 parents, and 5 children from high school to preschool/toddler. The kitchen was incredible! We found everything we needed to prepare and serve meals, with plenty of dishes and flatware for our large group. Our one disappointment was that the description read "six bedrooms" which we took to mean 6 rooms with doors that closed. We had presumed each family would have an adult bedroom and a children's bedroom on every level. The open loft was not conducive to sleeping arrangements for either young family. We had to split families up, which was unfortunate. It worked out, but an accurate floor plan, that we could study ahead of time, would have been very helpful. Overall, we loved the sunroom, the views from the rocking chairs on the decks (more chairs please?), the wildlife and wildflowers, the convenient access to town as well as to RMNP. The layout of the house allowed us time together and time apart. We had a wonderful Rocky Mountain family summer vacation at Rivendell!

A Wonderful Week at Rivendell

  • 5 of 5

Our family group enjoyed our stay at Rivendell. We appreciated the quiet area as we watched deer graze on the yard and saw elk just down the road. The view from the upper deck is spectacular and is a restful place to lounge if you need a get-away from the rest of the group. The lower patio and the sunroom also have great views of the mountains. The kitchen is well supplied for larger groups and we appreciated the dishwasher. Having an extra refrigerator on the lower level was great for extra storage for our group. We appreciated the proximity to RMNP and Estes Park as well. This home has great spaces for kids and adults to gather: the loft, the great room, and the sunroom. Our beds and bedrooms were comfortable and we appreciated having 4 bathrooms for our group. Steve responded very quickly when we had questions. We highly recommend this home for your stay. We would have loved more outdoor seating on the wrap around porch.

Excellent retreat, close to RMNP

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here while hosting a retreat with 3 guests. The property was better than expected. Kitchen is well stocked with enough plates, wine glasses, flatware, and serving ware for a large group. This house would work well for 2-3 families.

Here are the only negatives I have about this house:

- We had to bring our own firewood

- The driveway might not be passable for a 2wd car in winter, and there is no where else to park

- When we arrived, the wifi info given to us through VRBO did not have the correct password. There is no cell reception at the house, and since we couldn't access the wifi, I had to drive back into Estes Park to call the owner to get correct wifi info.

- The rooms were too warm when we arrived, even though the thermostats were below 60.

Despite all of the above, we would happily stay at Rivendell again!

Owner's Response: Thanks for choosing our home. Should you choose to return please not we have a landline phone in the house for guest use. We also have the driveway snow plowed when the house is in use. The wifi password is in the guest binder. Please come again.

Prefect Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 13 people, ranging from 91 to 20 months. The youngest being the only one under 22. The house worked our great for all of us. We were able to enjoy meals together. People could have quiet time if they wished. We enjoyed the mule deer and elk that came into the yard and surrounding areas. We all enjoyed time outside, walking, sledding and just playing in the snow. There are different areas in the house so you can have games in one area, quiet activities in another and still have a place for just viewing the outside. We loved the big back room with the electric stove. The house is well stocked with everything you could possibly need. Very well maintained. We all thought we would stay here again. Worked out fantastic. Thank you for sharing!!!

Beautiful Place!

  • 5 of 5

This home was absolutely wonderful! We love the decor and the feeling of home. There is a space in the back that had a fireplace and it was great for us to gather around. There was plenty of space for a larger group and was furnished well in the kitchen. Definitely recommend!
