About the property

ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING/CHILDREN/PETS - (My wife is extremely allergic to pet dander).

Designed “Just for Two”, the Burnt Mill Canyon Cottage is the most picturesque, immaculate, luxurious, spacious and secluded 1 bedroom cabin in Lake Arrowhead. It is the perfect place for a romantic getaway, anniversary, honeymoon, special occasion or just a weekend of relaxation. Established in 1922, it is nestled on a half acre lot on the lush side of Lake Arrowhead among the dogwoods, cedars, maples and pines at an elevation of 5,500 feet. Parking is easy and level - the cottage is reached by crossing a small seasonal stream on our own beautiful footbridge. It is conveniently located 3/4 of a mile south of Lake Arrowhead Village. If this cottage is booked, try our “Historic Hershey Cabin”, by typing 514845 in the VRBO/Homeaway search box.

During our recent major renovation, we installed porcelain tile floors, granite counter-tops, all new stainless appliances and a hi-tech central forced air heating system to keep you cozy. The cottage has been decorated by my wife, who is experienced in incorporating comfort and elegance in home decor. It is furnished with both modern furnishings and antiques, providing the creature comforts of modern day while maintaining the old fashioned warmth of a traditional Lake Arrowhead cottage.

The focal point of the cottage is the exquisite fireplace, faced with hand-hewn, split granite boulders. It is accented by a rustic knotty pine log mantel and artisan hand-hammered, bronze fireplace doors. The beautiful gas log fireplace ignites with the push of a button. To the side of the fireplace is a 42 inch, high definition, smart flat screen TV. (We have high speed internet/WiFi and Netflix, but do not have regular cable TV or a DVD player). What a perfect place to snuggle up by a glowing fire and watch a movie!

The "Hobbit" bathroom, downstairs, has a beautiful back splash, custom lighting and a unique sink that has been carved out of a large granite rock,. The kitchen is fully equipped with all of the amenities of home, and then some. A new washing machine and dryer are in the hallway upstairs.

The beautifully decorated bedroom suite has peaceful views of the canyon out the windows and cozy, upscale bedding on a new (2017) top rated - medium firmness - Queen Memory Foam mattress. This elegant room has a vaulted ceiling, separate sitting area and full size closet. Relax after a day of exploring by taking a shower under the rain shower head in the newly remodeled master bathroom. The bedroom also has access to an outside deck which overlooks the canyon. The cottage has a charming front porch and a large side patio where you can have breakfast, lunch or dinner while enjoying the scenery and the sounds of birds in the beautiful canyon. On a warm evening, relax in the chase lounges, sipping hot cocoa and marveling at the stars!

The cottage is situated on a very quiet road and is easy to find. It is surrounded by majestic old growth cedars (over 100 feet tall), dogwoods (that have beautiful flowers in the spring, and turn bright orange and red in the fall), pines, spruce, maples and rhododendrons. Step back in time by crossing the bridge, and notice the custom milled knotty pine siding, heavy timber moldings and beautifully crafted, massive front door. You will have arrived at one of the most picturesque cottages, in one of the quietest canyons, in Lake Arrowhead. This is exactly why the original owners built here almost a century ago!!

Lake Arrowhead is a private lake. Unlike many cabins, WE PROVIDE A PASS so you have access to hike the trails around the lake, use the two beach clubs (Memorial Day through Labor Day), and fish from the shore or use the Arrowhead Lake Association fishing dock.

The Lake Arrowhead area is a little hidden gem, with a quaint village, dinner theater (Tudor House), movie theater, wonderful local restaurants and various shopping opportunities. If you are looking for a romantic get-away, or just a place to relax and have fun, this is just the place. Lake Arrowhead celebrates all four seasons - warm summer days, fall colors, snow in the winter, and a beautiful spring.

Licensed: Permit 372-CA20150036-SUP/R 4/2019.

Our security system will be turned off prior to your arrival.

My wife and I look forward to having you as guests at the Burnt Mill Canyon Cottage!

About Paul and Janice

My wife and I were married in 1975. We love going on vacations, especially to the mountains - both of our grandparents owned cabins in either Big Bear or Crestline. We both recently retired. My wife's fields of expertise are education/teaching and interior design. I was a security consultant and I do property management on the side. We love the outdoors - hiking, kayaking, biking etc.

Paul and Janice purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Paul and Janice chose Inland Empire

(We have another Lake Arrowhead cabin - at the bottom of this page click on the "click here to see all my listing" line to see the Historic Hershey Cabin).

A year ago we purchased, and still own, use and manage, the historic “Hershey Cabin” which you will also find on VRBO/HomeAway under #514845. We liked Lake Arrowhead so much that we decided to buy and fix up another cabin up here. We looked at almost every cabin that came on the market in our price range for over 9 months, until we found the Burnt Mill Canyon Cottage. It is in a fabulous location – in Burnt Mill Canyon, Lake Arrowhead. The canyon is filled with old growth cedars and pines, in addition to the gorgeous dogwood trees with their flowers and autumn colors. When it rains or snows, it creates a seasonal creek that goes underneath our 35 ft. foot bridge. The cottage itself is like a postcard picture – just what you think a cottage should look like. The road outside the cottage is lightly traveled.

What makes this cottage unique

At way less than the price of a 400 square foot room with a parking lot view at Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa, you get your own, gorgeous, immaculate, quiet, private 1200 square foot cottage in one of the prettiest parts of Lake Arrowhead. The kitchen is equipped with all new stainless steel appliances, new dishes, glasses, pots, pans etc.

Lake Arrowhead is a private lake, and to use the lake, the beach clubs, and the lake trail, you must have a "Beach Club Membership" pass. We have the pass for your use. In addition, we have an "Adventure Pass" which allows you to park your car while you go hiking in the San Bernardino Forest. For those of you who like to hike, we have 2 books on hiking in the San Bernardino Mountains, as well as maps and other information.

Upon arrival, you will find a welcome basket including chocolates, coffee, tea etc. We have a great house keeper who keeps the cottage immaculate, and we also have a wonderful neighbor who watches out for the cottage and can help you in an emergency. Compare the Burnt Mill Canyon Cottage to any Lake Arrowhead hotels and you will see that we beat them across the board in price, privacy, size, quality and features.

Stop searching - this is the Arrowhead cabin you'll want.

  • 5 of 5

Spent a gorgeous extra long summer weekend and loved it. Have rented places that looked nice in photographs before, only to be disappointed with the quality. This cabin is obviously an owners' retreat that is shared with a select few between their visits. You can feel the quality - from the granite to the gorgeous tile floors to the custom stone work. Even a sink hand carved from a boulder onsite. Gorgeous - fully stocked kitchen, comfy furniture, secluded but very convenient location with a 3/4 mile walk to the village... we pulled in at night and the parking area lit up, then the lights on the walking bridge popped on to welcome us. The owners even thought to label the cabinets and light switches so we could find things - and put them away at the proper space - rent a lot of houses and you'll know why this is important. Stone fireplace, comfy bed, very nice shower, steam washer/dryer... Chipmunks and birds playing on the porch. SmartTV with Netflix and good wifi (Can I live here please?) But I think the interior decorating was the most memorable... Janice - you have the eye. Beautiful colors, antiques, pictures, hard and soft accents that I would have never thought to match together but they worked perfectly.

Not one negative to report. The only concern I had when booking was a lack of A/C, but I noticed finding that in Arrowhead was a rarity. I can see why... We were there in a VERY hot week during an August heatwave - the cabin (tucked in a wooded hideaway under tall cedars) never got hot and the evenings were extremely pleasant - almost chilly.

Make sure you page through the owners' picture book - a full pictorial history of the cabin throughout its lifetime along with some great history of the Lake. It was my girlfriend's first visit to California (she's from England) - my only concern is how to top it. Thank you Paul and Janice! Cheers.

First Class Resort in a Cottage Cabin - by Bob

  • 5 of 5

This is a superb Cottage Cabin to stay in. Within the first 5 minutes I said, I am going to like this. It is a nice quiet secluded cottage just right for a single or two people special get away. It is well maintained, has first class amenities with a 5 Star feel. The owners Paul and Janice have done a excellent job of presenting a first rate rental but with a homey feel. It is well decorated with historical artifacts from the early days in Lake Arrowhead like, wooden skis, snow shoes, wooden Bobsled, deer antlers, photos from the early 1920 time period but with all high end appliances. The cabin is well organized, a place for everything and everything one could need. I would rate this cabin above most nice hotels that I have stayed in. You must try it, you will be thankful you did. I know I coming back. Thanks Paul and Janice.

Owner's Response: Bob, it sounds like you had a very nice time at the Burnt Mill Canyon Cottage. Janice and I are delighted that you enjoyed the historical aspects of the cabin, as we are both history buffs. For new guests, we have a book by the front door that details the history of Lake Arrowhead and also the history of our cottage and the canyon we are located in- both in written form and in pictures. Bob - we would love to have you come again!

An impeccable graceful cottage in a serene and beautiful part of the woods

  • 5 of 5

Perfection. Exactly what I hoped to find. Quiet and peaceful. The area the cottage is in is one of the most lovely in Lake Ariwhead. Beautiful trees. Lush. A cooler micro climate. I hope to be back many times.

Idyllic Mountain Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Paul and Janice have done it again! A few years ago we enjoyed a week at the Hershey Cabin which they restored and remodeled, and recently we had a wonderful experience at Burnt Mill Canyon Cottage. Paul and Janice have a knack for locating and restoring historic Arrowhead cabins that benefit from their tender, loving care. The cottage is scrupulously clean, roomy, decorated in a rustic manner and yet far from primitive, and convenient to every point of interest in Arrowhead while still maintaining an "into the woods" atmosphere. The furnishings, kitchen equipment, and décor are equivalent to what one would find at a four-star hotel, and the patio areas upstairs and down are quiet, beautifully furnished, and induce relaxation. A notebook near the front door provides information on the history of the cottage, plus everything guests need to know to enjoy the Arrowhead area (including restaurant menus). We suggest guests examine the photos and historical artifacts displayed in the cottage, which greatly enriched our own experience. The cottage is surrounded by cedar, oak, and dogwood trees that, with the other native plants, provide a shimmering green curtain of privacy. We observed throughout the week resident chipmunks, juncos, and several Admiral varieties of butterflies. Occasional visitors, best observed with binoculars and patience, included acorn woodpeckers, flickers, creepers, jays, nuthatches, and gray squirrels. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and plan to return!

We are part of the Burnt Mill Canyon Association which is a group of about 100 home owners. The land that our homes are on was originally owned by the Forest Service and was leased to the owners. In about 1975 the land was sold to those owners who had leases, and green belts were created in between the cabins, providing for a very low density area.
