Overview

About the property

Location Location Location is the best feature of this property. The beach house overlooks the pacific ocean situated 80 feet above the ocean and is the perfect getaway to disconnect for yourself or reconnect with someone special. Walk on miles of untouched beaches, fish on the famous Rogue River, enjoy watching the sunset from the dining room table, back deck, beach or picnic on large backyard lawn. Year round you may sun on the back deck reading your favorite book or looking at numerous varieties of birds, including flocks of pelicans flying by. Watch for whales while warming yourself by the wood fire stove. Look for chipmunks, squirrels and families of quail walking through the yard. This is a private little paradise.

Our favorite evening is cooking a wonderful meal using fresh local ingredients like wild salmon, tuna or crab in our kitchen that overlooks the ocean. After dinner take a walk in the temperate weather or build a bon fire in the backyard to gaze at stars and watch the ocean. The front covered porch is great for rainy romantic meals or to hang out in the hammock and watch the wildlife.

We do have a great TV with DVD player but most people visit us to disconnect from the world and be in nature. It is common to look out the bathroom window and see whales going by or hear sea lions barking below and watch osprey or even bald eagles circle over head. No telephones here.

Your own personal wine bar is a piece of driftwood on the beach, next to a bonfire watching the waves crash on the shore under the moon. You will love the Oregon coast.

Must inform owners if traveling with a pet.

About Terri-Lynn Kalhagen

My husband and I are film makers that travel the world. We met in High school in 1987. We now live mostly in Portland. We have put a lot of love into the beach house and remodeled just about everything in the home ourselves. We love the wilderness and energy of living on the ocean. Wildlife, photography, hiking, beachcombing, kayaking and fishing are some of our favorite activities in Gold Beach. It is a very friendly community.

Terri-Lynn Kalhagen purchased this house in 2001

Why Terri-Lynn Kalhagen chose Gold Beach

The location of this property is what made us move from Sacramento in 2001 to fix up this house. There is more wildlife than people and the peacefulness of the surrounding gardens and ocean are like being in paradise.

What makes this house unique

The continuous sounds of the ocean, the song birds, whales in the backyard, pelicans, seals and sea lions made us fall in love with the backyard. Even in the middle of December we find ourselves sunning on the back deck on a sunny still day. Unlike many properties on the coast, we have a magical backyard that is protected from the winds. The coastal storms are also a favorite as well as seasonal products like crab, albacore tuna and mushrooms.

Comfortable home with beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent 4 nights at this property. It is in a very quiet neighborhood--only the sound of the ocean and birds. The back yard is large, a great place to relax and enjoy the view. The near private beach a few blocks from the house is amazing. The furniture, especially the king-sized bed, was very comfortable. The location is about 5 miles from restaurants but there is a small market a couple of blocks away. The owner was very responsive and we really enjoyed our stay. Would rate 5 for the experience. The house is older with a few quirks but was clean and no issues for us--a couple and a dog.

Can't go wrong here

  • 5 of 5

This place is not fancy. But it is enormously clean, comfortable and welcoming for you and your dog. Smack dab on the coast, but alas on a high bluff so you actually have to walk (or drive) a mile to get access to the largely deserted and incredibly scenic beach. Although there are neighbors, you don't see or hear them; there is total privacy on the west-facing deck. Trails that wind from the yard to the bluff and through the forest are a special delight, especially for Fido. The house has everything you need, including a collection of crafts and activities to keep you busy should that fog roll in. Gold Beach is fun with plenty of options for eating and shopping. If the beach doesn't satisfy your walking urges, check out the Samuel Boardman Corridor to the south or the numerous trails inland. Best of all, the owner is so responsive that I made a spur-of-the-moment reservation for the next day, and everything went smoothly.

Beautiful place to stay in one of the most beautiful spots on earth

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week here in May, and had a fantastic time. The house has a gorgeous view of ocean from the large back yard, and in the northwest corner of the yard is a small, short trail to the cliffs overlooking the beach, 60 feet below. This is truly a dog friendly place; my 80 pound Goldendoodle was warmly welcomed by the owner, and enjoyed himself no end. The house is not a luxury home; but it doesn't cost as much as a luxury home either, and I am much more comfortable in a cabin than a Ritz-Carlton. It is a comfortable, quiet, well stocked retreat with a beautiful view. Bring binoculars; we saw whales from the deck. The beautiful foliage in the yard also provides a rather welcome wind break. We had one day with winds around 50mph at the beach (which was great fun), but the wind was mild on the back deck. It is located on the Oregon coast, so bring warm clothes to wear, inside and out, year round. The closest beach access is down the road a bit, and can be accessed either by walking down a quiet road or driving the 1/2 mile and parking at the access. The beach itself is beautiful, with good tide pools at the South end, which is frustratingly close to the cliffs on which the beach house sits. Gold Beach is 5 miles away. Fisherman Direct will sell you live or cooked crabs, fresh salmon, or a host of other delicacies from the sea, and the house has everything you need to cook what you bring home. Fishing guides are readily available for fishing either the ocean or the Rogue river (we caught Spring Chinook in the Rogue, which was amazing when barbecued on a Cedar Plank using the small BBQ on the back deck ). This section of the Oregon coast has some of the best hiking in the Pacific Northwest, leading to secluded beaches and stunning scenery that most people never see. The owners are super friendly, accessible if needed (we didn't) and have poured a lot of love into this place. If you are looking for a quiet, secluded, getaway in a fantastic location, this place will exceed your expectations. We will definitely be back.
