About Janel Garno

Janel, her husband Dan, and six children are from lower Michigan and have always enjoyed the outdoors, especially around water. The family had vacationed at this home numerous times before recently purchasing the home. Dan has enjoyed a lifetime of fishing and has found this location to be one of the best you can find. All of the six children prefer to play in the sand and water the entire day. Several of the children are now taking up an interest in fishing as well. While Janel grew up with one sibling, Dan has 14 siblings. Family gatherings at a lake home like this have been a highlight for the owners for many years.

Janel Garno purchased this house in 2015

Why Janel Garno chose Michigan

Having known the prior owners of this home, and having vacationed at this very site, made this home and location of special interest. In fact, the home is only about 10 years old and the Garno's vacationed in the area before the home was even built. If you enjoy the outdoors, water, swimming, fishing, sand, and great family time, this is an experience you will keep with you for a lifetime.

What makes this house unique

First of all, this large 11 acre wooded lot provides a peaceful and secluded setting. Whether you are just a couple wanting a peaceful week away, or a family with children wanting to make a little noise on the beach, you will find this location to provide a nice private setting to enjoy. One of the very unique attractions are the occasional freighters and ships from around the world that pass directly in front of the home. There are few places where this experience can be enjoyed, and this is one. Experiencing the ferry ride, staying on an island, enjoying the company of family, fishing, swimming, evenings around the campfire, and much much more make this location one of the most unique you will ever find.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Family has been traveling around Lake Superior for the last 5-years+ and our stay on Sugar Island was at the top of the list. From the moment we made our reservation we felt welcome. When we arrived was very impressed with the cabin-clean, well maintained & very spacious, pictures don’t give it the full justice it deserves. The views, unbelievable especially the ships that come through. There’s plenty to do in Sault Ste. Marie but it was hard leaving the cabin. Would recommend the Soo Locks boat tour & the Museum Ship/Valley Camp. Our children are 14 and have twins that are 10 and they had a wonderful time swimming, kayaking, camp fires and more. Would strongly recommend this cabin for anyone that wants to relax, reset and feel at home.

Great Cabin, Great Location, Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

Our family has stayed at this cabin for the last three years over the Labor Day Weekend. We love it. The cabin is very nice and accommodating. It has everything you'd need. We rent the pontoon boat as well and take rides around Neebbish Island as well as chase freighters up and down the St. Mary's river. Before our arrival, we stop at Walmart in Sault St. Marie and purchase our groceries for the weekend. There is also a corner store just 2 miles from the cabin if you need pop, milk, eggs, chips, etc. They also have a boat dock you can pull up to from the water to fill up your boat. I'd recommend this cabin to any family or couple looking for a nice quite get away with a great water view and view of the passing freighters.

Can I stay? :).

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had the most wonderful time at the cabin. The only downfall is, I didn't get much sleep watching for freighters to slip by silently in the night lit up like Christmas trees! What a memorable experience! We loved the campfire and the beach. The cabin is spacious and so comfy. Thank you for sharing your home! (And your neighbor, what a nice guy!)

Beautiful cabin in a beautiful location!

  • 5 of 5

Our recent stay at the Sugar Island cabin was fantastic! We were two families traveling together with a total of 5 kids, ranging in age from 2 1/2 to 7 years. The cabin was clean, well stocked, and completely comfortable for all 9 of us. The kitchen had everything we need, and the two refrigerators were exactly what we needed since we were on an island and couldn't run to the store regularly. It was great to have all of the amenities there so we didn't have to haul a ton of stuff with us ---- life jackets, linens, sand toys, games, etc! The location was absolutely beautiful --- gorgeous views of the channel, a wonderful beach for the little kids to play on and the older boys had endless hours of fun jumping off the dock into the water. We also rented the pontoon which was fun to be able to explore a bit and do some fishing. We had hoped that Sugar Island would have more "stuff" --- things to do/see, amenities, etc., but in the end, the seclusion was just what we needed to unplug and have a fantastic vacation!

Wonderful Family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We have 7 children, ages 23 down to 6, and this vacation spot had something for everyone. Some enjoyed fishing and kayaking, while others spent time down at the beach building sand castles. The layout of the home was perfect for our family and the views were spectacular. One of the highlights was watching the big freighters go by. We were able to spend some time in the Soo Locks and it was especially neat for us to see ships come in that we saw pass by the cabin. Bonfires and evening sunsets are very memorable. The owners are very easy to work with and always accessible. It is obvious that they put great care and thought into making their cabin a comfortable, clean place to stay. We were looking for a getaway where we could have some quality family time and detach from the chaos of life, and this was the perfect spot! Thank you.

On a scale of 1 - 10 we would give it a 20!!!! Beautiful location and the cabin is fantastic. Loved sitting on the deck watching the big ships pass on the way to the locks. Very "kid friendly" inside and out. The boys really enjoyed the large sandy beach and the kayaks. Never once did we hear "I'm bored". We all left saying "the next time we come. . ." Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us.
