About Janel Garno

Janel, her husband Dan, and six children are from lower Michigan and have always enjoyed the outdoors, especially around water. The family had vacationed at this home numerous times before recently purchasing the home. Dan has enjoyed a lifetime of fishing and has found this location to be one of the best you can find. All of the six children prefer to play in the sand and water the entire day. Several of the children are now taking up an interest in fishing as well. While Janel grew up with one sibling, Dan has 14 siblings. Family gatherings at a lake home like this have been a highlight for the owners for many years.

Janel Garno purchased this house in 2015

Why Janel Garno chose Michigan

Having known the prior owners of this home, and having vacationed at this very site, made this home and location of special interest. In fact, the home is only about 10 years old and the Garno's vacationed in the area before the home was even built. If you enjoy the outdoors, water, swimming, fishing, sand, and great family time, this is an experience you will keep with you for a lifetime.

What makes this house unique

First of all, this large 11 acre wooded lot provides a peaceful and secluded setting. Whether you are just a couple wanting a peaceful week away, or a family with children wanting to make a little noise on the beach, you will find this location to provide a nice private setting to enjoy. One of the very unique attractions are the occasional freighters and ships from around the world that pass directly in front of the home. There are few places where this experience can be enjoyed, and this is one. Experiencing the ferry ride, staying on an island, enjoying the company of family, fishing, swimming, evenings around the campfire, and much much more make this location one of the most unique you will ever find.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Family has been traveling around Lake Superior for the last 5-years+ and our stay on Sugar Island was at the top of the list. From the moment we made our reservation we felt welcome. When we arrived was very impressed with the cabin-clean, well maintained & very spacious, pictures don’t give it the full justice it deserves. The views, unbelievable especially the ships that come through. There’s plenty to do in Sault Ste. Marie but it was hard leaving the cabin. Would recommend the Soo Locks boat tour & the Museum Ship/Valley Camp. Our children are 14 and have twins that are 10 and they had a wonderful time swimming, kayaking, camp fires and more. Would strongly recommend this cabin for anyone that wants to relax, reset and feel at home.

110% Satisfied

  • 5 of 5

We have always been 110% satisfied with this cottage rental. The place is beautiful, very clean, well furnished and just a joy to stay at. It feels more like a home than a cottage or cabin. We love the view of the water and seeing the freighters pass by. We have rented this cabin before and will continue to do so - there is everything to LOVE about this rental. You will not be disappointed !

Wonderful family cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this charming cottage for the weekend of our sons graduation from Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie. The cottage is well stocked and immaculate!! Everything about the cabin was so warm and welcoming from the fire pit that offered a great "man" hang out spot for the weekend, the perfect view of the river from almost every part of the cottage to the wonderfully comfy beds! I was a little leery of the ferry situation at first but found it to be completely manageable. We had such a wonderful and relaxing stay and the cottage is absolutely an ideal family get away spot!

Charming, cute, comfortable and cozy cabin on the river!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I loved the location on the river and the setting on the southern tip of Sugar Island. There was a handy boat launch nearby. We spent time sightseeing in our boat. The place was spotless and the furnishings were quite comfortable. It was decorated with an "up north" theme. We felt quite at home there. The deck was great for grilling and sitting out. The large windows and french doors facing the river were perfect for viewing freighters passing by. We did our grocery shopping and had lunch at Antlers in the Soo before we caught the ferry over. We enjoyed cooking and found everything we needed to make our meals. The owner was very welcoming and provided good service. We would love to stay there again and would recommend it to others.

first 2 stays were so great we arranged work schedule so we could stay on available days a 3rd time

  • 5 of 5

Our crew stayed at cabin 3 times and each time was very comfortable, accommodations were great, it just so happened fall colors were peak, so very good-all three times. My only hope is that my wife and I can come back when it's vacation time. I know we would love it.
