Just picture yourself enjoying a large private sandy beach with shallow water. You get wonderful views of the massive shipping freighters that are making their way from Lake Erie to the Detroit River. Sounds wonderful... doesn't it? You bet it is. And a surprise when you arrive! A bottle of wine from one of the local wineries and a cheese platter ready to welcome you. The cottage is in an exclusive neighbourhood just outside of the lovely, historical town of Amherstburg. In fact, this stretch of beach is the only large surface beach in the town's area. The rest of the coastline is made to up of breakwalls. The freighters pass along Lake Erie and into the channels that guide them to the Detroit River. They are starting their bend into the river right in front of the cottage. That is why you get such a wonderful view of their passage. You will be dozing off or playing on the beach and the subtle sound of "chug-chug" will catch your attention. Yep - a magnificent freighter going by. It never gets old! The historical town of Amherstburg is just 5 minutes away. There you will find Fort Malden, the ferry to Boblo Island, the Splash Pad, grocery stores, department stores, boutiques, banks, restaurants and pubs. Lots to see and do. The cottage is located very near to the Southwestern Ontario Winery route. Maps and information about the wineries along this route are made available at the cottage for your convenience. Also, Essex County is known for its wonderful produce that is locally grown in its fields or greenhouses. Fresh and easily accessible for you. Birders literally flock to this area. Here you will find some of the best areas for birding. There are two bedrooms in the cottage - one with a queen bed and one with two twin beds. All the mattresses, pillows, bedding, towels are brand new. There is also a new Aero automatic mattress that increases the sleeping capacity to five. The laundry facility has a washer, dryer and laundry tub. The kitchen is fully stocked with all of the baking and cooking utensils that you would need, Spices and some essentials are also stocked. Bedding and towels for indoor use are provided. Any blankets or towels for the beach are yours to bring. The cottage has its very own bonfire pit in the yard for your enjoyment. What makes this Cottage unique
The large sandy beach with the shallow water provides a safe and wonderful destination for your family. The historical town of Amherstburg hosts events every weekend. And the Wine Route. Well..... there's always something fabulous to do every day!
Bright, clean and comfortable
We were lucky to find this cottage on short notice after a flood drove us out of a nearby creek-front VRBO. We should have booked this one in the first place. It has every convenience you could want, is in a good location and (unlike the creek-front place) is clean as a whistle.
Great spot for birders. There's a trail at the end of the lane that runs along the lake. We spotted dozens of species.
End of summer stay! An unexpected nice touch by our host Barb providing wine, cheese and fruit tray on our arrival. Facilities clean, short drive to all amenities meeting our expectations. We (and our little Biton) enjoyed our stay.
Cosy and clean quaint cottage! A lovely qetaway!
This was the cleanest cottage we have ever stayed in. It was cosy and quaint! The wine and cheese tray was a nice surprise! You really need to only bring your groceries. Amherstburg was such a pretty town! The waterside ice cream shop is worth a stop for sure. If your kids play Pokemon then they will love walking around the town! I imagine the autumn and winter are glorious! Great visit and Barb is a very thoughtful hostess! Thank you for allowing us to use your lovely cottage.
Outstanding cottage, relaxing vacation, perfect hostess!
My family had an outstanding time at the lake! Barbara was a top notch hostess, helping us get to know the area, and providing a perfectly accommodating stay. The house was like a home away from home. It was quiet, comfortable, and had everything you need in the kitchen and the bedrooms. The lake and beach were wonderful.
We highly recommend!
Beautiful cottage, wonderful host
Sandy Shores was a beautifully kept little cottage that was clean with modern beach decor. I have to say Barb really thinks of everything. The only thing we had to go out and get was the main groceries for our meals. We really enjoyed our time here. Barb was an amazing host. Very welcoming and helpful in providing information about the area. The wine and cheese tray was a yummy surprise when we arrived after a long drive. The water at the beach is warm and my daughter and her friend had a blast playing in the waves. Barb provides water toys and sand toys which was a nice touch. I would warn that it is a bit rough for little ones, and I suggest bringing water shoes to get past the rocks at the shore. However, once you're about 10 feet out it's a sandy bottom and you can walk out forever. Beautiful sunsets from the shore and Barb provides ample seating. We will definitly be coming back.
On a side note if you'd like to eat out we suggest Ricardos Italian restaurant. The food was amazing, the best Italian we've ever had. There is also a little ice cream shop right across from the water in downtown Amherstburg. You can walk across the street and their seating where you can enjoy your ice cream and watch the sunset.
Great time lakeside!
We very much enjoyed our stay at Sandy Shores! Adorable cabin, just enough space for two adults and two kids. Well stocked kitchen, comfy beds, warm blankets everywhere and very cozy. We stayed during a cold snap Dec/Jan and the cabin was kept cozy, though be sure to bring warm slippers/socks in winter (we were warned). Also greatly appreciated our surprise welcome gift of sparkling wine and cheese platter! Very hospitable hosts and would definitely stay again.
So close to the historic town of Amherstburg where you will find Fort Malden, the ferry to Boblo Island, many restaurants and pubs. You're also just a short 2 minute drive to the Wine Route where you can visit, sample and purchase some of the most delicious locally produced wines.
