Hello, I have been fishing the AuSable for 30 years. If your a trout fisherman like me, enjoy the famous Mason Track of the South Branch, you will love this place. We do.

Steven Loving purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Steven Loving chose Higgins Lake

This property has been in our family for 15 years. We love the AuSable River and the surrounding area. You will enjoy the great outdoors of northern Michigan, fly-fishing, and swimming in the river.....if your up for it. : )

What makes this cabin unique

Fish out your back door. Take a walk up stream and fish down to the cabin. Enjoy the dock for cocktails and the large wrap around porch with a view of the river. If you have beginners they can practice their skills on the pond before hitting the stream.

Beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

A true fisherman's experience on the banks of the unique south branch of the Ausable. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend in the river and are sure to be back! The cabin was very well appointed and clean. The grounds were exceptional, including the large pond filled with Bluegills. Perfect for a relaxing fly fishing experience.

Owner was quick to respond to request. Arrival instructions were clear and accurate. Home was clean and well equipped for our needs.

Location on the river provided sounds of the water and sights that awed children and adults.

Information for activities and local attractions were perfect for our stay

Great stay/will definitely be coming back!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here 3 nights with some friends for a weekend of fly fishing and relaxation. What a gem! Clean, up to date and great location for kayaking, golf and fishing. Easy access to the S. Branch, main stream and North Branch. Highly recommend the wade downstream from the Canoe Harbor Fishing Access trail. Owners were accommodating and provided good instructions. Will definitely be coming back!

Great time

  • 5 of 5

Our time there was great. Very peaceful, everything you would need is there. You can tell they care everything is clean and in its place. For me that is everything. We enjoyed walks in the woods picking huckleberries. There is even a pond with blue gills which made our grandsons first time fishing great! The place to go if you enjoy peace and quiet but close to things to do.

Delightful time!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time here, and hopefully not our last. The cabin seems brand new and very nicely furnished. I'm probably repeating what everyone else has said, but it bears repeating!

If you are a fly fisherman, I don't think you could find a better spot! You literally can walk across the nicely maintained yard, out onto the river-side deck and down a few stairs, and you are in the river! If you don't fish, you can sit on the nice benches and relax as you watch the river go by.

If you like to hike or just take a short walk in the woods, you're in luck too. There is a very well maintained and blazed trail a short walk from the cabin, complete with periodic map stations that let you know where you are and where you can go from there. Northern Michigan forest scenery at its finest (complete with wild blueberries!).

We also took a couple of trips on the river, once in kayaks and once on tubes. The part of the river that we went on, starting in Roscommon (We used Campbell's canoe livery--very nice people, very helpful), was easy for us to navigate (two mid-fifties adults and a 15 and 10 year old, with very little experience).

Lots of neat birds (heard a whip-poor-will a couple of times), a fawn outside the kitchen window one morning, and, I suspect, a lot of other wildlife to see.

You could easily stay and cook at the cabin, as the kitchen is complete (including dishwasher), but we went into Grayling and ate at three different restaurants. The food was good at all three (Gray Rock, Ray's, and Spike's), and so was the service.

So, to close out this long-winded review, I'd give them 6 stars if I could, but since 5 is the limit, I'll have to go with that. We had a delightful time!

Clean, comfortable, and right on the river!

  • 5 of 5

Could not be more perfect for a fly fisher! So many little details like a place to hang waders, rod holders, and a fly tying desk. Enjoyed walking out to the river and sitting on the benches, and sunning on the dock. Beautifully landscaped and generously appointed inside. We also enjoyed hiking to the campground and picking wild blueberries. Appreciated the wi-fi as cell coverage was scarce. Would definitely stay here again!

Owner's Response: Marianne - We are so pleased that you and your crew enjoyed the property as much as we do. It is a special place. Regarding cell coverage Verizon works great, then Sprint, then AT&T. For the latter two, there is an internal antenna next to the fly-tieing table for guests to use that works well. I have/use Sprint with few issues. We hope you will come see us again!
