Why Stephen and Carol Huber chose Lyme
Lyme, Connecticut is known for it's unspoiled rural beauty. Uncas Lake is nestled in thousands of acres of state forest and Lyme conservation land. The access driveway to the cottage is a 3/4 mile long private gravel lane. People often comment that they feel like they are on a small undeveloped lake in the middle of Maine, even though they are just 10 min. from I-95. You can't find a more centrally located, pleasant, private, tranquil, place to relax and/or explore the Connecticut River valley, Long Island Sound, and the many attractions between New York City and Boston.
What makes this House unique
You will return home filled with wonderful memories of exploring New England, sunbathing on the dock, boating and swimming in the crystal clean waters of Uncas Lake, and candlelight dinners on the screened porch with friends and family.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Quiet, relaxing, beautiful!
Our family had a wonderful time at Laurel Cottage. The quiet setting made us feel like we were miles away from it all, just what we needed for a vacation. The lake is calm, clear and refreshing. Only non-motorized boats are allowed on the lake which make swimming, wading, and boating so much more relaxing. This house is perfect for lakeside fun. We used the canoe, kayak and paddle boat which were provided with the house, to explore around the lake. There is plenty of reading material and board games. We didn't even turn on the tv! And plenty of room for six. We didn't feel like we were on top of each other and could get a little quiet time from one another. The kitchen is fully equipped. We enjoyed being able to BBQ, make our own breakfast and other meals. One of the best spots in the house is the screened porch. Big enough for all of us to sit and enjoy a meal, and a great place to relax and take in the beautiful scenery. Overall, a pleasant and memorable vacation. Hope to be back soon!
Three weeks of beautiful views, crystal clear lake and QUIET!
Just last week we finished a three week stay in this home on Uncas Lake. We could not have been more pleased, in any way, with our stay. Once you have arrived here you will be surprised to realize you are still in Connecticut. The rugged landscape on the drive in puts you in any part of Maine, Vermont or New Hampshire you want to be in. It is absolutely beautiful.
Upon our arrival we found the house to be extremely clean and ready for guests. The large screened in porch is where you will find yourself most of the day if you are not out canoeing, kayaking or sailing on the lake. It offers great views of the lake in an outdoor setting insect free. We found ourselves taking most of our meals on this great porch.
This location is unique due to the fact that most of the land surrounding the lake is part of the Nehantic State Forest. Due to this fact the lake is quite sparsely populated and because there are no motors of any kind allowed on the lake it is very very quiet and relaxing.
Our hosts, Carol and Steve could not possibly be any more welcoming and gracious. They were extremely quick to respond to any questions we had or any need that arose. You would be hard pressed to find better hosts.
You could not possibly be disappointed with a vacation here. And lest I forget, if you like to fish you will be very happy to find yourself on one of the best fishing lakes in the state.
Very relaxing and peaceful
Our stay here was everything we hoped it would be. We had no "plans" for the week other than to enjoy our location. We did just that! Other than short drives to hiking trails, we had no need to leave this house. The view is absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed evenings on the deck listening to nature's sounds while playing games, reading books, doing puzzles, or simply just sitting there. The lake is clean. We enjoyed swimming, fishing, sun bathing, rowing in the canoe. Steve & Carol are super nice people.
Very quite and private spot on a very clean pond.
Stayed for a week and enjoyed ourselves the whole time. Plenty to do at camp or short drives to attractions.
A lovely, quiet hideaway, on a pristine lake!
This was just what we were looking for! The house is spacious and airy, with a fabulous screened-in porch. Since it is set so far back from all roads, and is positioned in a declivity, there were no road sounds, indeed, no noise of civilization whatsoever! It was incredibly peaceful. And the water was WONDERFUL! Clean and clear and deep! And warm as well! The swimming was excellent! We swam and boated every day, with enormous enjoyment.
We had lots of great bird sightings - kingfishers, tanagers, hawks, cormorant, and the best - a night heron!! The waterlilies and other water plants were varied and fascinating as well. We did not get a chance to do any fishing, but saw many happy fishermen on the lake. I think this spot is ideal for anyone who enjoys fishing, birdwatching, or immersion in nature of any sort.
We had a wonderful week here - comfortable both in the house and on the water. We hope to be able to do this again!
Not what we expected
The property was clean and the owners are quite friendly and took care of some minor concerns very quickly. A few things to note of importance is that this home is not air conditioned. There are 2 window units (1 in master bed, 1 in upstairs bed). Our stay was during an epic heat wave and these units were not what we expected to have as a home listed with air conditioning. Also, the two upstairs bedrooms have mattresses that have seen better decades. We actually used several comforters to cushion ourselves from the springs. There are no window coverings for the living area and outside patio which would have helped tremendously during the aforementioned heat wave. The pathway to the lake is long and all stairs, so just be aware of this with elderly or young kids. For some reason, we did not get directions from the owners before our trip and Waze had a hard time finding it, namely because of the mile long driveway.
We would like to thank our guests for their review. We hope your stay was pleasant in spite of your unfulfilled expectations. A few comments, the heat wave was unusual but prudent use of the floor standing fans with the AC units has always been more than adequate in the past. Because the house is located in the woods, on a lake with incredible views, and no one around, we have chosen to celebrate the view and not have shades in the great room. We will consider your suggestion for window coverings and look into the mattresses upstairs even though this is the only time they have been mentioned. GPS has not been a problem in the past, but we now also provide directions. The house is about 30 feet above the dock. Many of our guests have returned multiple times and currently 7 weeks in 2017 are booked by returning guests.
Tucked into the hillside above the serene waters of crystal-clear Uncas Lake, this comfortable cottage is surrounded by its own wooded grounds with private lake frontage. Guests can enjoy the canoe provided, fishing, swimming, wildlife and tranquility (no motor boats are allowed on the lake). You may spot otters, beavers and ospreys diving for fish in the calm waters, deer in the woods and wild turkey from the balcony or one of the two decks. Inside the spacious cottage are cedar-paneled walls, cathedral ceilings and a office/library with books and games. Enjoy beautiful lake views from almost every room and the large screened porch.
