Moss Side is a dream destination for wine lovers, golfers, writers, artists, historians, sportsmen, nature enthusiasts, or anyone wanting to get away for the week or just a few days. Completely private and rural, yet situated on a main thoroughfare only a short distance from an interstate highway, you will enjoy the best of both worlds- seclusion with convenience. Located just minutes from three wineries, four golf courses and less than 30 minutes from Richmond and Williamsburg, 60 minutes from Virginia Beach and two hours from Washington D.C., Moss Side offers something for just about anyone wishing to relax or enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
Visiting Moss Side, circa 1865, is like stepping back into the middle of the 19th Century. Enjoy the peace and tranquility of an authentic planter’s home. The furnishings, decorations, and architecture tell the story of what it would have been like to live in a fine house of that period.
Completely disconnect from the daily grind and marvel at a recently renovated property outfitted with all of the conveniences that life has to offer. A true retreat, Moss Side is the perfect destination for those who desire to be surrounded by history, nature, antique furnishings and luxurious appointments. A two bedroom house that sleeps four comfortably, Moss Side is for those who appreciate history, refinement and tranquility.
An authentic, detached out building, typical of 19th century homes, boasts a state of the art gourmet kitchen disguised in old world cabinetry and furnishings. You will be amazed at the contrast between historic detail and modern culinary convenience. A true historical gem and a perfect place to host a quaint meal is the upper level period dining room, complete with exposed ceiling beams and fireplace. All 6 fireplaces throughout the house and detached out building are working gas fireplaces which enhance the old world ambiance.
Nestled on 216 rural acres in historic New Kent County, visitors will relish the exquisite countryside by taking lingering walks through the property, go bird watching, or simply have a picnic on the lawn. One can tour the historic county of New Kent, play a round or two of golf, enjoy a bottle of wine at the local wineries, or jaunt off to wonderful shopping and excellent dining in nearby Williamsburg and Richmond. Envelop yourself in the past by touring several historical churches in the area as well as the iconic James River Plantations along the Route 5 corridor in neighboring Charles City County, 20 minutes away.
Moss Side is also a good destination for special events, such as corporate meetings or retreats as well as weddings and parties. Moss Side Manor has a neighboring property, known as Moss Side Cottage, that sleeps 6 and is available for guests. Bring the entire family or office, the address is 8335 New Kent Highway, New Kent, VA 23124.
The current property owner, John Poindexter, an entreprenuer as well as a land and building preservationist, is a native Texan. He currently resides in Houston while considering New Kent, Virginia his second home.
With family roots in New Kent dating to the late 1600's, John began a property acquisition and restoration effort in 2013. By 2014 it included 2500 acres of rural property situated near Williamsburg, VA. The acquired properties are once again becoming farming acreage and managed forests, characteristic of the colonial era.
Unlike most entrepreneurs whose interest New Kent has captured, his intentions have been to protect and preserve.
The property was in extreme disrepair when purchased in 2013. With the guidance of local craftsmen and talented advisers, the property was fully revitalized to its original condition, along with a few modern conveniences. In a home that was at one time full of life and vitality, the owner desires that new memories will be created and cherished by those who visit. Moss Side, circa 1865, was one of John's first renovations. Moss Side's acres were once in the Poindexter family, from which it was purchased and operated for generations by the Christian family. The Christian family still lives in New Kent and remains close neighbors and friends. The Christian's were pleased to witness the masterful renovation and to see their beloved family homeplace restored to its original elegance.
Moss Side is a wonderful place of tranquility and retreat due to its seclusion and natural beauty. It features a natural, lush environment and direct access to 216 farm and forest acres for the enjoyment of guests. The convenient location allows access to the wineries and golf courses and the James River Plantations, and is located near Richmond and Williamsburg, as well as Hampton Roads and Northern VA/ Washington D.C.
My family stayed at Moss Side for Christmas and although I have stayed in many beautiful VRBO homes, this is the shining star! The home and kitchen have been beautifully restored and decorated. We were not only comfortable staying there, we were charmed by the furnishings. It was spotlessly clean and the highlight of the trip was dining in the dining room above the kitchen in candlelight with a roaring fire. Amy is great to work with and checked in with us to insure we had everything we needed. I did not want to cook during our vacation so Amy recommended Brenda, who is on staff and also a caterer. We were so pleased by everything she made for us especially the tortellini soup, cornbread salad, goulash and chocolate cake(which was out of this world!). My family and I love history and we felt honored to have been able to stay in such a beautifully restored historic home. We will be back!
We so enjoyed our visits to three local wineries; New Kent Winery, Saude Creek Vineyards and Gautier Vineyards. Excellent wines, beautiful views and such interesting owners. We're planning a return rendezvous in warmer weather to enjoy the outside seating area!
If this property is available when you are in the area, you definitely need to stay here. It is beautiful, historic, romantic, peaceful, comfortable. We stayed 4 nights over Thanksgiving weekend. Although the home was built circa 1870, it fills every modern need. The kitchen was perfectly fitted for us to cook a full Thanksgiving dinner. The beds were lovely with very warm and comfortable bedding. The bathrooms are beautiful. There is even wifi and satellite television. All of this in a antique-filled home with a gas fireplace in every room. I loved the maps and art on the walls depicting local history.
Whenever we return to the peninsula, it is a no- brainer that we will return to Moss Side.
As you enter Moss Side, you imagine you are back in the 1700s living in this beautifully appointed home! In the separate "back kitchen", no expense was spared for those of us who enjoy cooking in and eating in the upstairs servants quarters! The location was perfect for our sightseeing day trips to Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown (both the state reconstruction and the National Parks Service archeological sites) and the Mariner's Museum in Newport News. Amy was responsive to our needs and check in & out couldn't have been easier! We enjoyed our time here as it was perfectly set up for 2 couples and would highly recommend it for the comfort and experience of being in a museum-like atmosphere.
Step back into time with amazing modern conveniences. Moss Side Manor is truly incredible. The house and side house offered so much unique character and dimension to our stay. We brought two of our boys (16 and 9) and they loved the experience. Richmond and Colonial Williamsburg were just 30 minutes away. It is a beautiful and romantic house , which is impeccably kept as well as clean. Moss Side Manor exceeds the listing. Amy was fabulous and provided excellent communication. Thank you so much for the amazing memories.
My husband and I stayed here for a long weekend in order to get out of the city, relax, and enjoy some local history. We originally wanted to stay on the VA coast, but this ended up meeting our needs much more efficiently and enjoyably.
The house itself is beautiful, comfortable, and clean, and I could have easily spent a day or two just sitting in one of the sumptuously furnished rooms or screened porch reading. It is the perfect combination of antique decor and modern amenities. The main house has small pantries adjacent to the dining room with coffeemaker, mini-fridge, and sink, and everything else you'd need for snacks or light meals. The full kitchen is in a (very) near-by, two-story outbuilding and has more than you would need to cook and eat multi-course gourmet meal in style. I would love to revisit this property with a load of full groceries and just cook.
There are many easy trips and beautiful drives within a half-hour or so of the property; we visited Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Fort Monroe (if you have any interest in military history or the Civil War, you must go here), and the VA coast with ease. There are also many smaller, more obscure historical sites nearby that are quite fun and inexpensive (or free!) to see and visit.
The property manager was promptly communicative and helpful, going beyond what I would expect from the usual vacation rental experience. I would highly recommend this property, and we certainly plan on returning ourselves sometime in the next year.
Less than 20 minutes from Richmond International Airport, 45 minutes from Newport News Airport, and 30 minutes to Richmond Amtrack, Moss Side is conveniently located near major transportation depots.
The property is less than 30 minutes from Williamsburg/Yorktown and Richmond via I64, 1 hour from Virginia Beach, 1.75 hour from Charlottesville, and 2 hours from Washington D.C.. Enjoy local places of interest, such as the James River Plantations: Shirley, Berkley, Westover, Sherwood Forest and Evelynton Plantations on Route 5 about 20 minutes away and local wineries and golf courses just minutes away.
