About the property

2 Bedroom, 2.5 Bath Idyllic Country Retreat Only Minutes From Winery And Golf.

Moss Side Manor is private and rural, yet located near a main thoroughfare and just a short distance from Interstate 64 so you can enjoy the best of both worlds- seclusion with convenience. Three wineries and four golf courses are found within minutes and its amenities are located less than a 30 minute drive from both Richmond and Williamsburg, an hour from Virginia Beach, and two hours from Washington D.C.

A stay at Moss Side offers you a rare look into what it would be like to live in a fine home during the mid-19th century. You’ll experience peace and tranquility in an authentic planter’s home with furnishing, decorations and architecture that transport you right back to the 1860s.

If you’re ready to disconnect from the daily grind in a beautiful and historic setting (with modern conveniences to keep you comfortable), book your stay at Moss Side. We offer a memorable destination for any traveler who enjoys being surrounded by history, nature and luxury. This two bedroom house comfortably sleeps four.

As was typical in 19th century homes, Moss Side features a detached building that today boasts a gourmet kitchen. Its modern appliances were installed to maintain the illusion of the 19th century as all have been disguised in old world cabinetry. Our kitchen produces simple meals and five-star dining experiences, both of which can be enjoyed in a rustic dining room upstairs or in the formal dining room in the Manor. This historical gem features exposed ceiling beams and a working fireplace. There are a total of six fireplaces found at Moss Side, all of which are working and gas-fueled, providing ambiance without the need for old-world labor.

Why Maxine Goins chose New Kent

The current property owner, John Poindexter, an entreprenuer as well as a land and building preservationist, is a native Texan. He currently resides in Houston while considering New Kent, Virginia his second home.

With family roots in New Kent dating to the late 1600's, John began a property acquisition and restoration effort in 2013. By 2014 it included 2500 acres of rural property situated near Williamsburg, VA. The acquired properties are once again becoming farming acreage and managed forests, characteristic of the colonial era.

Unlike most entrepreneurs whose interest New Kent has captured, his intentions have been to protect and preserve.

The property was in extreme disrepair when purchased in 2013. With the guidance of local craftsmen and talented advisers, the property was fully revitalized to its original condition, along with a few modern conveniences. In a home that was at one time full of life and vitality, the owner desires that new memories will be created and cherished by those who visit. Moss Side, circa 1865, was one of John's first renovations. Moss Side's acres were once in the Poindexter family, from which it was purchased and operated for generations by the Christian family. The Christian family still lives in New Kent and remains close neighbors and friends. The Christian's were pleased to witness the masterful renovation and to see their beloved family homeplace restored to its original elegance.

What makes this house unique

Moss Side is a wonderful place of tranquility and retreat due to its seclusion and natural beauty. It features a natural, lush environment and direct access to 216 farm and forest acres for the enjoyment of guests. The convenient location allows access to the wineries and golf courses and the James River Plantations, and is located near Richmond and Williamsburg, as well as Hampton Roads and Northern VA/ Washington D.C.

Last minute stay in this beautiful mid century home. So much fun staying in an old home, beautifully decorated and had every amenity you could ever want.

Loved that the kitchen was in another building. Made for such a different experience. My kids absolutely loved it! Will stay here or in another one of the properties again!

Pam was extremely good to work with and was very accommodating!

Beautiful place and wonderful hostess

  • 5 of 5

Pamela was a gracious host; truly kind and responsive. I can't say enough great things about her! She really took care of everything for me.

As for the property itself, you would not regret a stay there. Each room is beautiful, comfortable and clean. I highly recommend Moss Manor to stay if you're in the Virginia area.

Amazing!!

  • 5 of 5

My family rented Moss Side Manor for a Celebration of Life Gathering for my father. It was the absolutely perfect spot! Brenda catered delicious food for our guests and was a tremendous help. Amy made sure all our needs were met. I particularly enjoyed my time in the amazing bathtub and cooling off on the screened porch. The gazebo was a nice touch too. We will have amazing memories of our time here.

Beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed at Moss Side for Christmas and although I have stayed in many beautiful VRBO homes, this is the shining star! The home and kitchen have been beautifully restored and decorated. We were not only comfortable staying there, we were charmed by the furnishings. It was spotlessly clean and the highlight of the trip was dining in the dining room above the kitchen in candlelight with a roaring fire. Amy is great to work with and checked in with us to insure we had everything we needed. I did not want to cook during our vacation so Amy recommended Brenda, who is on staff and also a caterer. We were so pleased by everything she made for us especially the tortellini soup, cornbread salad, goulash and chocolate cake(which was out of this world!). My family and I love history and we felt honored to have been able to stay in such a beautifully restored historic home. We will be back!

A beautifully appointed period style property with all the amenities for an elegant experience.

We so enjoyed our visits to three local wineries; New Kent Winery, Saude Creek Vineyards and Gautier Vineyards. Excellent wines, beautiful views and such interesting owners. We're planning a return rendezvous in warmer weather to enjoy the outside seating area!

We made the absolute right choice when we decided to reserve Moss Side.

If this property is available when you are in the area, you definitely need to stay here. It is beautiful, historic, romantic, peaceful, comfortable. We stayed 4 nights over Thanksgiving weekend. Although the home was built circa 1870, it fills every modern need. The kitchen was perfectly fitted for us to cook a full Thanksgiving dinner. The beds were lovely with very warm and comfortable bedding. The bathrooms are beautiful. There is even wifi and satellite television. All of this in a antique-filled home with a gas fireplace in every room. I loved the maps and art on the walls depicting local history.

Whenever we return to the peninsula, it is a no- brainer that we will return to Moss Side.
