100' Prime Lakefront - rustic cottage w/dock, boats (sandy lake bottom not muck)"""

Bedrooms 2
Space 900 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

2 BR/1 BA w/great lake frontage

Enjoy one of Michigan's finest all-sports lakes in a secluded setting, with undeveloped lots on either side (effectively 300' of private lake frontage). Our rustic/retro cottage doesn't have many modern fancy upgrades (which helps us keep our rates low), so what you're getting is a great lakefront experience. Included at no extra charge is the use of our 14' aluminum fishing boat w/6HP outboard Johnson motor & plenty of gas, 14' Sunfish sailboat, (1) 12' kayak, (1) 10' kayak, & (3) 8' plastic lake kayaks. (Note: this is just 1 of about 5 "Bear Lake"s in the state of Michigan; ours is the one in Manistee County, Bear Lake Village, south of Traverse City and north of Manistee, on U.S. 31.)

About Kevin Mallison

We love our vacation cottage at Bear Lake, but rent it out when we're not using it to help pay the high property taxes.

Kevin Mallison purchased this cottage in 1960

Why Kevin Mallison chose Bear Lake

One of the best features of this secluded lakefront property is the lengthy shallow, sandy shoreline. This makes swimming and splashing around in the lake so much more fun than some lakes with weedy/mucky bottoms, or those that are too deep near shore to wade out and have fun with floaty toys and inflatables. Ideal for families with younger children, but fun for adults too. Also, Bear Lake water temps are so much warmer than Lake Michigan! Warm enough in June to get into the water, and sometimes as warm as bathtub water by Labor Day! Our spring/fall guests come because of our low rates those times of year, and for a quiet scenic getaway. October is popular when the leaves start to turn, because the area is beautiful when the fall colors arrive!

Outdoor campfire pit close to the lake shore; firewood is provided at no extra charge. Picnic table with nice view of Lake, including some lawnchairs. Because we don't have a washer/dryer onsite, linens & towels can be provided upon request and for an additional charge, but most guests bring their own. To keep our rates as low as possible, we give guests the option to clean the cottage themselves (later 2P checkout, with our supplies and equipment), or pay a $45 fee to hire our optional cleaning service (earlier 10A checkout to allow staff time to clean). The $45 fee will be deducted from your damage deposit unless otherwise instructed. For fastest assistance/response, call/text 304-290-9043 (C). We will try to answer immediately or get back to you soon afterwards.

Wonderful place to relax and relax some more

We had a wonderful few weeks of cottage life with a marvelous view of lake and sky and many cozy fires to cuddle up to. This is a perfect get away to enjoy nature and space and we did and would come back and do it again! Thank you Kevin!

If you like the outdoors.

My husband and I enjoyed our time at the Juniper Cottage. Very peaceful and quiet. We enjoyed fishing and taking a boat ride at sunset every day. My first time to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, fun, fun, fun. The kayaks were fun!! We had a bonfire every night and star gazing was amazing. I think we'll be back.

A pretty little getaway

  • 5 of 5

We purposely chose the "pre-season" in early May, as we were looking for some peace and quiet. It was beautiful -- we were the only ones on the lake and enjoyed kayaking and just relaxing. Regular visits by bufflehead and merganser ducks and were especially nice. Kevin was pleasant to work with and the cabin was comfortable and quiet. Just what we had hoped for.

great cottage!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage has a great outdoor area, great views, nice dock, cute bonfire pit (and the owner supplied wood!). The lake is beautiful... clear with a sandy bottom, and it is shallow for a good distance out. The cottage was clean, and very spacious. The owner was great to deal with. He was very prompt to respond, and he was very helpful and friendly. And he quickly refunded the security deposit after we left. We went up to the cottage for a weekend getaway and to golf at Arcadia Bluffs. The drive from the cottage to the golf course was easy and quick. We didn't get to use any of the boats included with the rental due to the weather. They all looked like they were in good shape, wish we could have used them. I would definitely recommend this rental. It is a great deal for what you get!

Owner's Response: We do try to provide helpful concierge service so you're not left fending for yourself and trying to figure out stuff on your own. We also try to keep our cell phone handy 24/7 so our assistance is usually a quick phone call or text away for any questions/concerns you may have during your stay.

Owner needs to personally speak with all renters before reservation is confirmed. Since this is our vacation home, call us to discuss rental arrangements. We're offering a no-frills, low-cost vacation option which will appeal to those who want an outdoorsy getaway. (It is not a modern facility, but instead has rustic charm including knotty pine and cedar tongue & groove paneling, and a natural wood-burning fireplace.) The cottage is furnished and includes kitchen dishes, pots, pans, etc. To keep costs low, however, our posted rental rates do not include linens, towels or maid service (which many of our guests provide themselves). There is no laundry facility on-site, but we can provide a clean starter set of basic towels and linens for an additional $45 fee if you don't want to bring your own. You have the option to clean the cottage before you leave, or pay a $45 cleaning fee for us to hire a cleaning service. During our prime season (mid-June to mid-September), we rent only by the week, Saturday to Saturday. Before and after our prime season, we don't have those restrictions, but then a 3-night minimum is required. Our cottage is closed from Thanksgiving until mid-April because it is not insulated and would be difficult to heat during extremely cold weather. Other details can be discussed when you call us. We do check email, but call for faster response: 304-290-9043 (C).
