Thanks for your interest in Sensational View! We bought this property in July 2015 and then lost the cabin just a year later in the November 28 fire. We hired a Knoxville architect to design the best home we could put on this lot. We wanted the feeling of towering over everything while being immersed in the panoramic mountain and city view. We finally got to see the framed house on December 11, and it is nothing short of astounding. Check out the drone video I took that day! (Click through the pictures and you will find it at the end.) The construction crew said they've been building in Gatlinburg for decades, and this view beats them all. Day views of the mountains, night views of the city lights. High, wide and unobstructed. Read on for details about the house and rebuild progress. We hope to open by sometime in July 2018.
ANNOUNCING EMBRACING VIEW!!! We purchased a second cabin in the Smokies in Aug 2017 because it has the best panoramic mountain views imaginable. Guests have already given it 19 consecutive 5-star reviews! Embracing View is the country counterpart to Sensational View. It is one of the rare places where you can see mountain sunrises and sunsets from opposite sides of the cabin. With beauty and blissful solitude, guests say they want to stay forever. Check it out here: https://www.vrbo.com/1145993
Current status: We started taking bookings for August 2018 and beyond, and have already had many bookings come in. (Thank you, everyone!) We are holding off on July at this point to be sure the house will be ready.
The NEW Sensational View is 3,061 square feet, five bedrooms, five bathrooms, and sleeps up to 23, with 19 guests in bedrooms and two sofa beds in the common areas.
The first floor and specifically bedroom two are designed to be very accessible. Many of our past guests have been interested in easy access for elderly family members (we have elderly family members too). This is important to us! Entering the cabin requires going up one step. Then the whole first floor (inside and deck) are flat. Bedroom 2 has a shower with a bench and three grab rails, plus a shower head you can mount or hold in hand. There are also grab bars next to the toilet.
The first floor has a great room including the kitchen, dining room, and family room. Our housekeepers already crafted another beautiful 12 foot dining table just like we had in the last house. The whole room has views toward Gatlinburg and the mountains with a wall of windows. This room will have a 70" TV.
All five bedrooms have attached bathrooms. The master suite on the first floor has a large bathroom with shower and separate tub. It has great views and direct access to the deck and hot tub. This and all bedrooms will have 49" TVs.
The second floor has a large game room, designed as a balcony overlooking the great room and the view. It will have a pool table, foosball table, cocktail arcade, and 65" TV. Bedrooms 3 (four guests and big views) and 4 (seven guests) are on opposite sides of the game room. A wraparound deck connects the bedrooms outside and offers not only amazing views of the city and mountains but also a neat perspective looking back into the house. (Thanks to our architect for convincing us this was a good idea. We were skeptical but it's awesome! We are starting to refer to it as the "catwalk.")
Bedroom five is the penthouse - a bedroom/bathroom suite with a king bed and sleep sofa, wet bar, refrigerator, microwave, and seating area perched high above everything. It has a wall of windows 16 ft wide for the best panoramic view of Gatlinburg and the Smokies anywhere. If there is a better suite in town, we would seriously like to see it! There will be a 65" TV over the wet bar, but you may never notice it because of the view. :)
Milestones to date:
January 2017: lot cleared of all debris
February: architectural plans finished
May: got zoning approval for the new, larger home
June: all lots on our street are now cleared of debris and natural ground cover is growing back
July: building permit issued, started retaining walls, lots of hardwood trees are sprouting new growth, all damaged trees are now removed and the view is very open and jaw dropping (the excavation crew was impressed)
August-September: Final grading completed, foundation footers poured and inspected
October: Foundation completed, Framing began Oct 25
December: Framing inspection passed Dec 19. Windows and patio doors installed
January 2018: Started HVAC, plumbing. Prepped outside of house for final surface installation. Changed slope and width of driveway to make it easier to enter from street.
February: Completed roofing, siding, HVAC, plumbing, sprinkler system, electrical. Designed kitchen and wet bar in penthouse. Our housekeepers James & Maria finished crafting the new 12 foot dining room table using wood reclaimed from the same barn as our last table. Hooray!
March: We will be in town to inspect the home March 18. Walls and finishing work will then begin. We will post new photos after our visit.
Here are details on the new sleeping arrangements:
Master Bedroom: King (sleeps 2)
Bedroom 2: Queen (sleeps 2) - note that the shower has a bench, three grab bars, and a shower head that can be mounted or handheld; the chair height toilet has two grab bars
Great room: Queen sleep sofa with memory foam mattress (sleeps 2)
Bedroom 3: Two queens (sleeps 4)
Bedroom 4: Full over full bunk and triple bunk (sleeps up to 7 or separate beds for up to 5)
Game room: Queen sleep sofa with memory foam mattress (sleeps 2)
Penthouse: King and queen sleep sofa (sleeps 4)
The old Sensational View cabin that we lost in the fire had 42 five star reviews. Though it was an older cabin that didn't really take advantage of the view, the location and view are so amazing that guests still loved it. (In comparison, the new home is spectacular - much more spacious and with decks, windows, and patio doors designed to bring the views to you inside and out.)
What should you expect? Here are a few reviews from guests at the old cabin.
"This property had it all. You couldn't ask for a better central location and the view is in the name, Sensational! ... You can tell that the owners take pride in their mountain getaway and it shows throughout the entire guest experience. I would highly recommend this property and we will definitely stay here again!" - Nov 2016
"The cabin is very comfortable and quiet. It feels like it is a million miles away with the privacy and that gorgeous view but you are so close to town and everything you need. ... This cabin truly met every need and want we had. We didn't have to drive forever through winding roads to get to it yet we had the privacy and view we love. No one wanted to leave!! We will definitely be coming back again very soon!!" - Oct 2016
"The location is so spot on. It is secluded, yet Gatlinburg is 5 minutes OR LESS, Pigeon Forge is less 15 minutes or less. The view is awesome and you can see the city lights, yet still get that nice "away from everything" feeling." - Sep 2016
"This was our first trip to the Smoky Mountains and I can't imagine a better place to stay. It was awesome. The owners were easy to contact and everything was ready to go upon arrival. The view was Sensational. It was hard to leave the deck, especially at night. And the location is perfect, in my opinion. It feels like you are secluded, but Gatlinburg is just minutes away." - Jul 2016
"The Sensational View Cabin is everything the owners claim it to be and provides a perfect setting for priceless memories." - Jul 2016
"We got here at night and walked over to the big windows and were breathless by the view. It was the lights of the city of Gatlinburg. It is worth staying here for just the view." - Nov 2015

About Jay and Amy Hopman
Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, we started visiting Gatlinburg at a young age and have continued to visit almost every year for the past 40 years. We have hiked to most waterfalls and many peaks in the Smoky Mountains and find it is the best place to visit for nature and family activities. Amy is a biologist and science teacher and loves the wildlife in the Smokies. You can usually find her peaking under a rock or downed tree in the park.
Jay and Amy Hopman purchased this Cabin in 2015
Why Jay and Amy Hopman chose Gatlinburg
In the 1980s our family stayed several times in a cabin that had a great view of the mountains. I remember sitting on the deck seeing the lights from the city shine upward. This cabin is similar except that the view is even better! In fact, it is the best view we've seen of the city nestled in the mountains with the National Park in the background. The layout of the cabin is perfect for family reunions, and we host a lot of three generation vacations. We never get tired of hearing how much families enjoy the cabin and their time together.
What makes this Cabin unique
Many cabins with views are at the end of long, windy drives and have little parking available. This cabin is just 1 mile or about 4 minutes from the main Parkway in Gatlinburg and easily handle 6 cars off street! It's easy and fast to get to and is minutes from a supermarket, the community center (with swimming, bowling, and other activities), and provides quick access to everything from the National Park to Pigeon Forge. You can get to groceries, hardware, the arts and crafts loop, and some restaurants from here without driving through city traffic.

Our family decided to stay at Sensational View to celebrate Thanksgiving. Upon arrival we were amazed by the cleanliness and beauty of the cabin. Likewise, we were in awe of the day and evening view of downtown Gatlinburg. Our hosts were very attentive when we would email them any request. Also, the amenities, close proximity to town, and entertainment (air hockey, arcade, and hot tub) kept the family entertained for hours. I would recommend staying here any time you are vacationing in town. I am hoping my family and I can visit again and stay at Sensational View.
Hi Jennifer, Your family was a delight to host. We loved seeing the pictures of your family having Thanksgiving Dinner around our big table. Little did we know you would be our last guests before the Gatlinburg fire. Thank heaven you and so many others left town before the disaster and are safely home. We hope you will come visit again when we have a newer, bigger, and better cabin. We would love to host you.---Jay & Amy
Best view and location...cozy, felt like home!
This property had it all. You couldn't ask for a better central location and the view is in the name, Sensational! My husband and I travel to Gatlinburg every year, and this year decided to bring the entire family. The owners made the booking process simple. They were extremely welcoming and helpful, sending us area info and responding promptly. The welcome packet was very informative and the directions were easy to follow. The cabin itself had something for everyone to do and kept us occupied when we just wanted to stay in and relax. We had family air hockey tournaments and nothing beats playing the arcade games for a trip down memory lane. The décor was super cozy and we felt right at home. The beds are very soft and comfy, the cabin super clean. You can tell that the owners take pride in their mountain getaway and it shows throughout the entire guest experience. I would highly recommend this property and we will definitely stay here again!
Jennifer, Thank you for the kind review. I know you work in the hospitality industry so this means a lot coming from you. Ironically I see this review post just after the Gatlinburg fire and the cabin is gone. But we will be rebuilding as soon as we can. We are starting a custom design that makes the view feel integrated into the whole cabin instead of just a few windows. Can't wait to begin hosting again. We'll see you then!---Jay & Amy
We absolutely loved staying in Sensational View. Just after arriving we were welcomed, as we looked out the window at the view, by a huge, beautiful black bear walking up the ridge. It was truly AMAZING!! Our kids were so excited and thrilled to see him and watch him so close!! He was beautiful but not nearly as interested in us as we were him as he passed by quickly. Hahahaha!!! Jay is great and the communication with him is by far the best we've had in all the years we have been coming to Gatlinburg. He helped us in any and every way he possibly could and always responded immediately to any questions we had. His family has done an amazing job with this cabins interior since they bought it. The cabin is very comfortable and quiet. It feels like it is a million miles away with the privacy and that gorgeous view but you are so close to town and everything you need. We slept amazing because the beds were so comfortable!! Our large family has always struggled to find a cabin that has the number of beds we need plus room to relax, watch TV or play games and still feel like we are all together. This cabin truly met every need and want we had. We didn't have to drive forever through winding roads to get to it yet we had the privacy and view we love. No one wanted to leave!! We will definitely be coming back again very soon!!
Hi Tammy, thanks so much for the wonderful review. We're glad the bear was there to welcome you... it's part of an agreement we have with him. ;) It means a lot to us when folks from Tennessee who come to Gatlinburg all the time say how much they like our cabin. We look forward to having you all back next time! ---Jay & Amy
As if it could get better!
Our second experience with the Cabins and the owners was even better than the first. And the first was an unbelievable experience. The upgrades made to the cabin this year were amazing. The kitchen and Bathrooms made me want to go home and remodel mine. Sorry Jay, might steal some of your ideas. We can’t wait to plan our next trip and be able enjoy the view and this cabin again.
Nice to have you back, Nanette and family. Your comment made us laugh because we have been discussing that our master bathroom at our full time home is looking very 80's. Funny that the bathrooms at the cabin are a lot nicer than the one we use every day. (It probably won't be that way for long now that we're talking about it.) ---Jay & Amy
Sensational describes more than the view
This is a sensational cabin in many ways. Some 40 years ago, we lived up on a nearby mountain overlooking Gatlinburg. This felt like coming home, except this cabin was much larger. This cabin has amazing views by day and night. Its location is definitely in bear country where bears frequent and we spotted one our first evening in the driveway and by the deck. Kids screaming "it's a bear" seemed to scare it back off to the woods quickly. The accommodations were fantastic with plenty of hotel-like amenities and extra personal and at-home feeling touches to make our anniversary trip very special. Microwave popcorn and hot chocolate and tea hit the spot on cool evenings. It was close to attractions we took the grandkids to see and arts community we have missed. Easy to run to nearby grocery for supplies also. Despite a family tragedy prior to trip preventing everyone from coming, we had a sensational time and will definitely come back!
Vickie, we're so glad you could spend your anniversary here. It was really cool knowing that you used to live nearby and were back to visit. We do hope you will come back and stay a little longer next time! Thanks for the kind review. ---Jay & Amy
BEST CABIN in Gatlinburg!!!
We had 11 guests and this cabin accommodated us extremely well. The owner is communicative, friendly, and concerned that you experience the best. The cabin has great amenities: new appliances (including washer/dryer), game room, TVs in every bedroom, hot tub, WONDERFUL view like the name suggests, convenient location, nice flow, and comfortable beds. The location, as mentioned, is so spot on. It is secluded, yet Gatlinburg is 5 minutes OR LESS, Pigeon Forge is less 15 minutes or less. The view is awesome and you can see the city lights, yet still get that nice "away from everything" feeling. It is very quiet and woodsy around the grounds. The place is very well maintained and very clean. The driveway is large enough that we had 4 cars without problem (which sometimes is a problem at other mountainside cabins) We had everything we needed to set the backdrop for a great time. Our group will be using this place again, and we have yet to do that because we hadn't found a place we enjoyed this much. If you are looking at a cabin for a family or small/medium group, then look no further.
Thank you, Libby, Matt and crew so much for this review! It means a lot to us when folks who have stayed in many other cabins year after year say that ours stacks up so well. We look forward to hosting you next year for the annual LeConte hiking trip! ---Jay & Amy
