The famous Makaha surfing beach is just down the road. Drive or hike down to the surfing beach to watch spectacular 20 feet waves in the winter or snorkel all year round at the Makaha Caverns. Makaha surfing beach is a visitor's dream beach to surf the breaks, swim and snorkel the caverns where the flora and fauna of this incredible area is home to many turtles, dolphins and all species of fish. You can even take in whale watching in season.
The Makaha area is also known as the westside and has many other neighboring beaches that offer flat stand up paddling conditions and smaller wave riding for novice surfers when Makaha is enjoying big waves for more seasoned surfers.
If hiking is on your list of things to do, Kaena Point hiking trail is a 2.5 mile trail just a few miles away that connects the westside to the north shore of Oahu. This trail is at the end of another famous westside surf beach known as Yokohama or "Yokes" for short. This is where the road ends and Kaena Point hiking trail begins. On your hiking adventure you are walking along the oceanside pathways where if on a very lucky day you could see all that Kaena has to offer...whales, dolphins, fish jumping and the rarely seen endangered monk seals basking on the sand in areas only accessed by boat. Other animals that make Kaena home are albatrosses and other bird species that make their nesting place along the pathway.
