About the property

Vacation on the edge of the world in isolated, clifftop house with 180 deg view

Clifftop Oceanfront House is Newly Open For Vacation Rental. We are Owners of Two Other Five Star Rentals! See Reviews of location and hospitality at VRBO #668277

Clifftop House is a spectacularly situated custom 2 bedroom, 2 story redwood house with upper and lower wraparound decks, perched on a bluff 100 ft above a rocky cove in a magnificent, private 2.5 acre oceanfront estate.

The art-filled house is located on Highway 1, in the "Banana Belt," with the sunniest weather on the coast. It was built in 1968 by our family with local architect Richard Perkins. The house faces southwest and enjoys a more than 180 degree ocean view including miles of pristine rocky shoreline, peninsulas, rocks and beaches. Stargazing, sunrise and sunset, moon rise and moon set are all spectacular. The grassy bluff in front of the house is studded with wildflowers much of the year. Stroll out in our meadow by the creek to listen to birds and see what is in bloom.

You Can Rent the Whole Compound for Up to Six People

Clifftop can accommodate up to 6 people if desired. Clifftop House itself can sleep up to 4 people. For a larger group an additional 2 people can be accommodated for a fee in the Cabin located next door. The Cabin is equipped with a full kitchen, bath and its own deck. See VRBO #668277 for the description of "Creekside Cabin" (& more photos and reviews of the site!). We do not rent the Cabin separately when Clifftop House is occupied, so whether you use one or both houses, you will have the place to yourselves! Please e mail or call for details.

We are 3.5 miles north of Anchor Bay, 7 miles south of Point Arena and 10 miles north of Gualala, all of which offer restaurants, shops, parks, and beaches. Our stretch of coast is very empty and quiet compared to Sea Ranch, Gualala or Mendocino village. But there are still lighthouses, historic sites, local craft shops, and spectacular county, state, and national parks to explore nearby. There are also fine art galleries, local music and theater in Pt. Arena and Gualala. In summer, several farmers markets offer local produce, meats, cheeses and other delicacies. If you do not feel like cooking, enjoy the variety of nearby eat-in or take-out restaurants (there is even a very good Thai place 10 minutes away!).

Our House Book provides extensive details and recommendations about where to eat, shop, nightlife, beaches and other coast attractions.

Despite its convenience to Highway 1, Clifftop is exceptionally isolated. Our very few neighbors are invisible, seldom there - or both. Despite the miles of sweeping views, generally no house lights are visible at night. Star and planet gazing are spectacular and people come here specifically take advantage of the low light pollution.

The master bedroom is downstairs with a king bed with Tempurpedic memory foam mattress, fireplace, vintage TV, and windows overlooking the bluff and ocean. Custom shades provide privacy at night and comfortable enjoyment of views during the day. The smaller bedroom has a queen bed and two walls of large windows, including a sliding glass door opening onto the large wraparound lower deck that reaches to the top of the cliffs.

The lower level has a full bath and shower.

Upstairs is an open plan living/dining area with a high vaulted ceiling, redwood paneling, tile floors, and walls of windows. A sliding glass door opens onto a spacious wraparound deck. There is a wood stove, comfortable seating area, dining area for up to 6, a 32 inch flat screen Smart cable TV with DVD player, and a full kitchen and breakfast bar. The south and west facing windows offer more than 180 degrees of views. Custom shades make sunset watching a delight. The full kitchen features a Bosch dishwasher, side by side refrigerator/freezer, a glass top electric range with oven, and a microwave.

We provide deck furniture for both the upstairs and downstairs decks, including a cushioned double chaise lounge.

Clifftop is equipped with high speed wireless internet and cable TV as well as a landline for unlimited local calling.

The house is filled with art created by our family and friends, including notable Mendocino County artists from the 60s and 70s. Most of the furniture was built by our family, friends and other local artisans. Antique, leaded and stained glass windows illuminate the stairwell.

Whales (we’ve seen at least six kinds, including Greys, Humpbacks, and Blues), seals, sea lions, and sea birds are always in view off the decks and the roar of the ocean will lull you to sleep at night and pull you out of bed in the morning, unless you decide to sleep in! The grassy bluff in front of the house is full of wildflowers and butterflies most of the year. Birds, deer, bobcats, dragonflies all enjoy the grass, creek and flowers.

The property is not landscaped. Our family has worked for 3 generations to maintain the land as high quality habitat for native plants and wildlife.

A gorgeous 1 hour drive takes you to Anderson Valley for wine and beer tasting, Mendocino Village, Hendy Woods ancient redwoods, or Van Dam Pygmy Forest. Kayak Big River near Mendocino Village or closer by, the Gualala River.

Note: the house is professionally cleaned before you arrive.

*We have another VRBO property (#492927) in San Francisco. Take a look at our reviews to see the quality of our hospitality.

We are sorry, but because of the steep cliffs and abundant wildlife, no pets or children under the age of fifteen are allowed.

Why Stay at Cliffside House?

*With rare exceptions, despite the sweeping views, no house lights are visible at night. You are alone with the ocean and the stars.

*Unlike Sea Ranch and much of the coast, there is no public access to our property. You have the waves, birds, stars, sunsets, flowers, whales, wraparound sunny decks and meadow all to yourself.

*the sheltered sunny blufftop meadow is a constantly changing display of wildflowers

*The creek and the secluded location draw diverse wildlife year round.

*We are located in the "Banana Belt", the sunniest area on the coast.

*Sea birds and marine mammals seem to love our cove (see photos). There is always a show!

What makes this house unique

We have 2.5 acres of pristine ocean front with a creek, forest, native plants and wildlife. It is right off of Highway 1, yet very secluded. Although you can see miles of coastline, no other house lights are usually visible. The creek draws wildlife, frogs and butterflies. When the ocean is still you can sometimes hear it gurgling. Whales like our place -- they often stop to feed, rest and even mate below of our deck and cliffs.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved every second of our time here. We stayed Thursday through Sunday and it was a perfect long weekend / getaway. Dan and Emily were great - they left us a great bottle of local wine and the cabin had all necessary amenities. The highlight is definitely waking up to that ocean view each morning! We will definitely be back!

If you're the kind of person who wants a respite from the world complete with total peace and quiet and stunningly beautiful ocean views from every room, this is the place for you. The house is warm and hospitable with huge windows to capture miles of coastline. The super comfortable king-size bed faces the ocean so you can lie in bed and watch the sunset. There's even a fireplace to keep you warm and cozy. You can't see another home from anywhere on the property which makes you feel very secluded. The house is filled with all the amenities you could possibly need and, while it isn't fancy, it's certainly full of charm. The owners have provided a binder with complete instructions and very helpful hints on places to eat and visit. However, if you're like me, you won't want to leave once you arrive. I have stayed on the coast with my husband since the 1970's and this, by far, is one of my very favorite places. Book your get-away soon because I think that once people discover this magical place it will be hard to reserve.
