About Jan J Witherspoon

The cabin was a dream or ours for many years, and we broke ground in 2007 to build Bear Creek. During construction, a friendly bear was seen many times at the creek watching as the construction progressed, so we named the cabin "Bear Creek". There is no better place to come and relax after working in the city. Bring your CD music and play your favorite mountain tunes! My personal favorite is watching the sunrise with a hot cup of coffee on the back porch. At night you will enjoy the mountain sounds, tree frogs and katydids will sing you to sleep. "The stars shine brighter at night at Bear Creek!"

Thanksgiving 2017

  • 5 of 5

My wife, two teenage boys, dog and I stayed here for Thanksgiving week 2017. Plenty of room for all of us. Loved the gas fireplace and the day bed on the back porch. Taking a midday nap on the back porch when it's 45 degrees out was awesome. Enjoyed being able to take our dog for walks on the acreage and being able to walk the on property stream. Didn't see the bear, but had a few deer make a trip through the yard. We travelled quite a bit while staying here, found restaurants, breweries, and grocery stores all within a 30 to 40 minute drive.

Overall, a very nice place to stay. Decorated well, comfortable beds, everything was clean. Thanks Jan for making your home available to us.

Secluded cabin in the woods

  • 4 of 5

After reading previous reviews, my husband and I were excited to have found a cabin close to where we wanted to hike to waterfalls and ride our motorcycle. We knew the cabin was about a 20 minute drive from Brevard, which was fine but not conducive to a quick drive back into town for supper. The road to the cabin is well maintained but a twisty one. The back deck provides a peaceful spot and you feel like you are at tree level with a good view of the forest. It is very close to DuPont Forest and other great drives out of Brevard, such as the Blue Ridge Prkwy.

We were there when tropical storm Alberto came thru and for days it was very humid. Yes the cabin is at a higher elevation, but with only having a window air conditioning in the master bed there were several evenings that were a little uncomfortable. Plus the A/C had a mustiness to it. There were no screens on the windows on the back deck and the screen door would not close, leaving large gaps which allowed bugs to get into the cabin. So we had to leave the door closed which prevented any air flow to help cool the cabin.

Another inconvenience was the master bedroom closet door and the bathroom cabinet door were both locked, which meant leaving clothes strewn on chairs as the dresser had a musty smell, plus no storage for bathroom items. We were there for 10 days so the lack of closet space was an issue. Did appreciate having a washer/dryer to use.

Last issue is the cleanliness of the cabin. I did not use the master tub as there was a white residue around the bottom of the tub which I assumed was from it not being cleaned from a previous renter. The windows had not been cleaned for awhile due to the amount of dead bugs and dirt on and around them. There were several lights that needed bulbs replaced which is not a big deal, but just goes to show the cabin needs a little attention.

We also live in a wooded area, so understand the challenge of keeping a residence clean with an onslaught of pollen and insects, but we don't rent out our home to travellers. We expected the cabin shown in the beautiful pictures presented by the owners, but were a little disappointed.

Wonderful place to stay with a family; owner always available to answer questions

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay very much despite all the rain. Indeed, the spacious porch with a view of the forest was a blessing and we were able to enjoy our dinners outside despite all the rain. The cabin is fairly close to many hikes we wanted to do (and did in our rain gear).

Even better than expected

  • 5 of 5

The only thing you'll need to get once you get there is groceries. All pots, pans, silverware, accessories are provided and we cooked a lot while we were there. 15 min to any hiking trail you could imagine. One morning, we actually saw a bear in the back yard...but it ran off before we could get. Picture of it. The house makes you feel as is you are "home" and not just staying in someone's rental. I'll only recommend this place to people wanting to stay in the area.

Nice cabin

  • 4 of 5

Pros-The Bear Creek cabin is adorable and peaceful. It is decorated nicely and we found nearly everything we could need in the kitchen. The porch was a nice place to sit and watch the hummingbirds, especially in the morning. The bed in the master bedroom is very comfortable. The sitting area upstairs is a nice place to curl up and read a book. Jan was very responsive to our needs when we had a problem. She sent over her repairman who was a very nice gentleman. My children had a blast playing in the woods near the creek. We found lots of creatures and the water was ice cold. I think this cabin would be even better in the winter when you could light up the fire place or have a fire out in the fire pit. The location is perfect and close to so many fun things.

Cons- The listing says the cabin has air conditioning. It wasn't until we got there and realized that the cabin only had a window unit in the master bedroom that we went back to the listing and realized that you only see that part of the description when you hover over the word air conditioning. I think this is the fault of VRBO, not the owner. Jan had her repairman bring us another window unit for the living room. I think it was exceptionally warm the week we were there. Although we were able to cool down stairs with both units, the upstairs remained warm. We purchased a fan and that made it ok so that you could sleep up there. I did not feel that my deposit was returned in a timely manner and had to email and call to get it returned 5 days after check-out.

Overall- This is a nice cabin and it would be 100% fabulous in the fall or winter. My family had great fun hunting the animal shapes in the pebbles in the shower. Great location as well.

Places to see- Pretty Place (Symmes Chapel), Graffitti Rock ( It has another name but if you ask people will tell you where it is), Table Rock, Dupont State Forest, Sliding Rock in the Pisgah National Forest, Chimney Rock.

Brevard, NC is 20 mins Away and Pisgah Forest is 25 mins away. The Pisgah National Forest is a land of mile-high peaks, cascading waterfalls, and heavily forested slopes. Comprised of over 500,000 acres, the Pisgah is primarily a hardwood forest with whitewater rivers, waterfalls and hundreds of miles of trails. This national forest is home of the first tract of land purchased under the Weeks Act of 1911 which led to the creation of the national forests in the eastern United States. It is also home of the first school of forestry in the United States, now preserved at the Cradle of Forestry in America historic site, and boasts two of the first designated wilderness areas in the east. The Pisgah, Grandfather and Appalachian Ranger Districts are scattered along the eastern edge of the mountains of western North Carolina and offer visitors a variety of opportunities for outdoor recreation and enjoying the natural beauty of the mountains.
