If you prefer, curl up with a book or magazine or pick a game or DVD available for a variety of ages. WiFi and cable TV available. Combined living and dining area, FULLY equipped kitchen as well as full-sized laundry facilities. Larger bedroom features a small dresser, closet and a queen-sized bed with a memory foam topper. Railway Rest is located just outside the town limits in a quiet and peaceful setting. A vacant field and forested area are adjacent and to the rear of the property allowing guests privacy. Listen to the sound of Mill Creek across the street and enjoy fishing from its banks in town.
Your personal vehicle or bicycle is needed for travel to and from town, or possibly to Black Mountain for the more adventurous cyclist - think Point Lookout Trail! Taxi service is available in Marion. The closest airport is Asheville Regional, approximately 45 minutes. Greenville/Spartanburg or Charlotte are alternates and are approximately 1.5 and 2 hours away, respectively.

About David and Margaret
My wife and I live and work in western NC. We're not natives, but have adopted the area as home. We love it here in the Blue Ridge Mountains - what's not to love? Working in tourism for years and living in the area gives my wife a unique perspective - she knows where "the locals go" as well as the visitors! We can't wait to share our home and all the area offers with you!
David and Margaret purchased this House in 2014
Why David and Margaret chose Old Fort
This property is near our home, so we are very accessible to our guests, if necessary. We also love the area and fell in love with the simplicity of this home. It's very quiet and peaceful, even though it's so convenient to so many area activities.
What makes this House unique
The property is quaint and cozy. Hike up the hill behind the house, cycle up to various mountain bike trails - Point Lookout, Kitsuma and Heartbreak Ridge or sit on the porch swing and watch a train chug up the mountain.

Great for a working weekend
I stayed at Railway Rest while in the area for work. It was very relaxing to retreat to this cute cabin in the town of Old Fort. The location is perfect, you can hear water flowing from the nearby creek and trains pass several times a day, making for a nice view. Many great sites are just down the street. The cabin had everything we needed to be warm and comfy. Perfect place for two friends or co workers to stay together.
Thanks very much! We're glad you found our home to be a relaxing retreat for you and that it worked out to be convenient for all you wanted to do in the area.
Home away from home
I would definitely recommend! Went up for a girls weekend and Margaret met us at the house and was so helpful in suggesting places to eat and things to do in the area. The house felt so comfortable - tastefully decorated and the kitchen was stocked with all of the basics. The breakfast bread was delicious. Catawba falls and Andrew's geyser are very close and the Biltmore house is only about 20 minutes away.
Railway Rest is perfect for a girls weekend and we're so glad you enjoyed yours! We're always happy to help with suggestions about area attractions, restaurants, etc. So many of these are so close - we're glad you were able to visit Catawba Falls and Andrews Geyser. So many more await your next visit! Come again soon!
my family and i had a wonderful time at the railway rest. we spent 10 glorious days in the area, exploring gem mines, waterfalls, lake james, the blueridge parkway, black mountain, asheville, and many other wonderful places. the house was such a nice place to come back to in the evenings. we were able to cook and enjoy our breakfasts and dinners outside, along with a glass or two of wine (but old fort itself is dry, so make sure you pick up your adult beverages in neighboring marion before arrival). margaret and david were very accommodating with some extra items i requested and they had delicious goodies waiting upon our arrival. i would definitely recommend staying here!
We're so happy you and your family enjoyed your stay and were able to travel around, visit so many different places in the area and think of Railway Rest as your home base. Thanks again for staying with us. Come back any time!
Great place to stay close to Pisgah trails
The property makes a great home base for exploring Pisgah and the nearby trails. Easy bike access to Kitsuma, Heartbreak Ridge, etc. The property is clean and well appointed with everything you need if you want to cook and stay in. Black Mtn is a ten minute drive and has plenty of restaurant options. The hosts were great to communicate with and stocked the kitchen with breakfast items and coffee.
Thanks for the sweet review and the suggestions for future cyclists - we plan to look into those in the future!
