My family of five (kids ages 11,9,5) enjoyed staying at the Coconut Hill Cottage--and yes, you do have coconuts there on the premises which are fun. The home itself is clean, well-equipped, with gorgeous views and a nice private pool. Please note that I was surprised that the upstairs and the downstairs of the cottage were accessed only by outside stairs (no inside access). I guess this is fairly common in Caribbean homes, but it was not really an ideal set-up for sleeping arrangements for our family. My main advice, however, on this lovely cottage is to realize that this it is up a SUPER steep hill/mountain overlooking Coral Bay (that's why it has such beautiful views!). Think the streets of San Francisco and you get the gist. And the streets are narrow and a honestly, a little scary to drive on. I held on for dear life each time we made our way up and down the mountain to our cottage. The place is also very remote. There is a small grocery store and a couple restaurants that we went to at the bottom of the hill in Coral Bay--they were fine. However, some of Coral Bay looked like wasteland, and we daily drove past an open dump on our way to/from the North Shore beaches. We essentially didn't venture out once we got home from a day at the beach because of limited dining options and my personal fear of driving up/down the mountain at night. I'm obviously a little wimpy in this regard--I admit it--but next time, I will stay at a place closer to Cruz Bay because it's closer to shopping, dining and I don't have to drive so far (or high) to get where I want to go. Sue was great and very responsive to requests and questions. We never got to meet her because they were away at the time we visited, but her neighbor was great and accommodating. St. John is a wonderful island and it has some of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. My favorites were Maho Bay and Trunk Bay. We will be back soon, I hope!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.

My wife and I stayed at Coconut Hill Cottage for our honeymoon and had the best vacation of our life. First of all, the pictures on this site do not do the cottage justice. I could have spent the entire 10 days we were there just sitting on the couch on the screened in porch. The view is incredible and blew away our expectations. The cottage was well equipped and had everything we needed (beach towels, movies, cookware, etc...). We slept in both the loft (our favorite) and in the master bedroom. The beds were extremely comfortable and we slept like babies. The cottage is secluded and very peaceful. The pool area is great to relax and read. The grill works well and we saved some money by having several dinners at the house. Bob and Sue are fantastic hosts and had great recommendations on restaurants and activities. We spent the majority of our vacation exploring the island and beaches. No pictures will ever do this island justice. It is the most beautiful place I have ever visited. Coral bay is awesome and has some great placed to eat and drink (I am off rum for a while:)) We will be back and would love to stay in this cottage. May even bring some friends next time. Thank you Bob and Sue for a wonderful honeymoon and a vacation we will never forget!! The MillersDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Our family had a memorable Christmas holiday at Coconut Hill. The listing description was very accurate, although I think that the photos did not truely capture the amazing views from the lovely screened in porch area. We really loved the cottage, it was comfortable and tastefully appointed, and we enjoyed exploring the island and the beaches. Snorkeling was great; our family saw sea turtles, barracuda, needlefish, Nassau grouper, and many rays. Watching the pelicans dive at Lameshur Bay was so much fun. I'd recommend a sunset sail aboard the Blacksails catamaran Kekoa, so enjoyable. The owners were helpful suggesting restaurants that we might try. We particularly liked Sunday brunch at Miss Lucy's and dinner at Skinny Legs. St. John is a beautiful place to visit, and Coconut Hill Cottage is a perfect place to stay while you're on the island!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

The Cottage on Coconut Hill turned out to be a perfect match for our family of five (two adults, boys ages 13, 17 and 19). Sue and Bob were great hosts, willing to offer advice when needed, but also allowing us privacy. The views are incredible, and one of our challenges was pulling ourselves away each morning to begin exploring the island. We were also impressed with how well-equipped the cottage was. In addition to having nice appliances and dinnerware, the cottage comes with everything one needs to make a great beach excursion – chairs, towels, noodles for snorkeling, two coolers, etc. etc. We packed the car once and were set for the week. The layout of the cottage is a bit different than we’re used to in the states in that it is necessary to walk outside to go from floor to floor, but that’s part of the charm and fairly common in the islands. The bedrooms were well appointed, the mattresses and pillows comfortable. The cottage is also tastefully decorated and really adds to the relaxing vacation feel. I really don’t have any “cons” to report, but do believe that future renters should be aware of two facts. The drive to the cottage is rather harrowing for first-time visitors. We had arranged to rent a 4WD vehicle for our trip, but none were available when we arrived on St. Thomas. Our minivan struggled to ascend to the cottage on dry pavement. I’m not sure it would have made it following a rain. Secondly, be advised that – like everywhere on the island – it is necessary to conserve water. So, for example, there is only one source of drinkable water in the cottage, and renters are encouraged to minimize water usage in a variety of means. It only makes sense, but if you’re used to simply drinking from the tap, or flushing the toilet after each use, it requires some adjustment. I strongly recommend The Cottage on Coconut Hill and have no doubt we will stay here again if/when we return to STJ.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My husband and I spent a week at Coconut Hill for our honeymoon this past October. Though it that is supposed to be smack-dab in the middle of the rainy season, while we were there it mostly only rained at night. Every day was just gorgeous. We arrived just as the sun had gone down and unpacked in the twilight and settled ourselves into the loft to sleep that first night. The view we woke up to the next morning was simply breathtaking! I had to pinch myself to make sure I hadn't died and gone to heaven. Coral Bay is an adorable village. The locals are warm and welcoming, and every sign for every DIP in the road has been "defaced" in a most charming and whimsical way (e.g. "Stinky Donkey DIP," "Skinny DIP!," "DIPhthong," etc.). Back to the cottage, though -- it was nicely supplied with cookware, dinnerware, and utensils, and the only thing we were missing were the correct filters for the coffee maker, but we managed to make do. Owners Sue and Bob were extremely helpful to us when we discovered, shortly after our arrival, that several items had been stolen from our cooler by thieves at TSA. They very kindly picked up our list of missing items for us when they went on their next shopping trip to St. Thomas -- something we never would have asked or expected them to do! -- and probably saved us a good bit of money by buying what we needed there rather than in St. John where groceries are a bit pricier. It was quite humid the night we arrived and the day we left, but the fans and the swimming pool kept us more than adequately cool. I think we only slept with the air conditioning on in the downstairs bedroom once. The rest of the time there was almost always a nice breeze and the fans kept the air cool. It definitely feels like summer there *all the time*, which was nice! All in all we could not have picked a lovelier or more perfect spot for a romantic and memorable honeymoon.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

The best family vacation yet! We have rented many vacation properties and we can easily say that Sue and Bob were the most gracious hosts we have ever met, helping us choose all the best restaurants and mapping out all of our beach adventures with us. The house was imaculate and beautifully appointed with modern kitchen, 3 beautiful bathrooms and the most amazing screened in porch we have ever sat in. Sitting on the couch and breathing in the crisp, clean air was like luxury camping! We could hear all the sounds of the jungle without any worries of mosquitos or other pests touching us. And we never turned the A/C on. I highly recommend this vacation rental. It was perfect for a family of 5. Would love to go back next year!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our first visit to Coconut Hill was the week before Christmas 2011 along with our adult children as a family getaway. Sue and Bob were fantastic providing all the inside information on the island. The pictures do not do justice to the views. We snorkeled each day and then returned to sleepy Coral Bay for drinks and a bite to eat. There was plenty of room so everyone could have privacy if they wanted. We spent most of our time in the huge screened porch or the deck by the pool. We enjoyed our stay so much that my wife and I returned for our 35th anniversary this June. Coral Bay was even more quiet in the off season and the privacy of Coconut Hill, you cannot see any other homes, was appreciated. The pool was the perfect temperature, so when we were not snorkeling we were in the pool. Even slept out by the pool one night. For a couple the cottage is a great romantic getaway. Our daughter is strongly considering it for her honeymoon. We give Coconut Hill our highest recommendation and look forward to visiting againRecommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Wow, what a trip! St. John is such a beautiful island and Coconut Hill Cottage is the icing on the cake. Fantastic location with incredible views. Impeccably clean, well stocked kitchen with high end appliances, beautiful furnishings in every room, comfortable beds, an incredible loft, great bathrooms (soap and shampoo provided - nice touch), pool and patio to enjoy and the best screened in porch that you will find! The owners, Bob and Susan, have thought of everything and you can tell that they put a lot of effort into maintaining this rental. It truly was a joy to stay there. We love staying in Coral Bay and enjoying a quieter side of the island. Still easy access to all of the spectacular beaches, great restaurants (love Shipwrecked!), grocery store minutes away, and the fun of seeing all the donkeys, chickens and goats, oh my! Treat yourself and visit St. John and spoil yourself and stay at Coconut Hill! We can't wait for our next visit.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
