This is our favorite place to stay at the Mauna Kea. Our family has spent time here for the past two years and we will stay here again in 2013. The owners and caretakers are wonderful and the home is very clean and beautifully maintained. The views of the ocean are so expansive and with the lights at Kawaihae at night our days and evenings are incredibly beautiful. Everything you need, and more, is provided at the house and its location makes the hotel and the beach just a minute or two away. The Kauna'oa beach at the Mauna Kea is, in our opinion, the most beautiful on the island and this home, with all its amenities, makes for a perfect stay in "paradise."

My family and friends have visited this house before and can not wait to return. The main house opens up to the gentle tropical breezes and the sounds of the birds in the morning. Because of the time change, we are all early risers. Everyone is anxious to get started on whatever the adventure of the day might be. For this trip it was mostly golf and beach time. The hotel has the best beach around. It is well worth the activity fee to use it. We tend to stock up at Costco and cook at the house. The BBQ is great and the kitchen has everything you need. The extra refrigerator in the garage is also helpful so one trip to Costco will last all week. The property was very clean and well maintained. The bedrooms were comfortable and cool for sleeping. The house is great for spending time with family and friends. On our last night there we were treated to a glorious sunset.

This has been by far our family's favorite vacation experience, which may explain why we have come here on six different occasions over the past 25+ years. Our first experience was with three little girls 7 and under. This year we were there with our adult children and three grandchildren. The owner has always been extremely helpful with any issues and recommendations. The home is situated high up above the Mauna Kea hotel and has an incredible 180° view of the ocean. What captures you when you walk in are the stunning views in every direction, as the home was designed to bring the outdoors in with glass doors surrounding the living and dining area. Yet with all the open space, you still have lots of privacy, as none of adjoining homes have a view into the backyard, in fact you can't even see them. The layout of the home is ideal for children of all ages, including infants. With 8 of us there plus an infant, we never lacked for space or privacy. This year our daughter and son-in-law stayed in the master bedroom with their 14 month old (a crib was provided), while my wife and I stayed in the back bedroom, which just as nice as the master. Each bedroom has separate entrances and their own bath, which gives privacy and makes it possible for four couples to use the home (though the 4th bedroom has single beds and is smaller than the other three). There is also a full bath just off the kitchen and dining area. Each of the bedrooms is air conditioned, while ceiling fans operate on the main dining and living area. We ate most of our dinners outdoors to enjoy the evening air and sunsets, but the dining room table was large enough to accommodate all of us. The kitchen is not luxurious, but fully equipped and more than adequate for informal island living. The Hotel has been remodeled after the earthquake and one has full use of the beach facilities. The beach is rated the best beach on the Big Island. We agree – you can swim 1/4 mile laps in the calm of the morning, snorkel both sides of the lagoon and see turtles, and play in the surf (which is child friendly). I vowed I'd never go to a luau, but my wife convinced me to take our granddaughters, and it was an incredible experience. For added variety, you also have full privileges at the Hapuna Beach Hotel next door, which has a spectacular infinity pool. For my money, there's nothing like waking before sunrise, pouring a cup of Kona coffee, reading a psalm and taking in the untold beauty, day after day after day.

This was the ideal place for our family vacation, with children and friends, and the grandma too. The three separate bedrooms are private suites, each with its own entrance, bathroom and lanai, so it was like having three hotel rooms, plus a house with the master bedroom suite. The pool is beautiful; we swam and played there every day, and we enjoyed dining outside on the patio watching the sunsets fade into starry nights on those beautiful summer evenings. Access to the Mauna Kea resort was a huge benefit—the nicest beach on the island, great fitness center, and the tennis center is world-class. What an exquisite location! We have stayed at this house twice, and we can’t wait to get back again. The house is comfortable and elegant, and the kitchen is well equipped. The staff were extremely helpful also. The property manager was available to answer any question. The grounds are beautiful. Everything is professionally maintained. We couldn’t be happier.

We stayed here with family and close friends and were instantly in love with the property. As is the norm on the big island, you must have a car, so we made trips into town to Costco and stocked up on food and essentials. We were able to park in the garage as well as a little area off to the side and were able to accommodate our 2 cars easily. We cooked nearly all of our meals in the large kitchen, which had absolutely everything we needed and is open to the common room which was great for conversation while cooking. There is also a gas grill for cooking burgers and steaks outside. The dining area and living room were perfect size for all 6 of us and very comfortable with nice furniture, although we spent most of our time outside. An entire wall off the living area opens up facing the pool with sliding doors (and screens) to let in the ocean breeze or sit and listen to the birds in the morning while drinking our Kona coffee. There was a nice television in the living room too for watching movies in the evening. Bedrooms have an unique configuration, great for privacy. One bedroom is located off the living room and the others are accessed from outside the common room. Each with a good sized bathroom and comfortable beds as well as their own patio. One room has 2 twin beds, which I think would be great for older kids. The pool is the gem of the home. Good sized for floating on a raft or a swim. Mornings are shaded and the afternoons were reserved for soaking up the sun. A patio umbrella was available for when we were ready to get out of the direct sunlight. We had a lot of fun watching the local geckos running around the flowering shrubs in the yard. The owners have caretakers that checked in with us a few times and made sure we had everything we needed and were available to call with even a simple question. They were so welcoming. The property is on resort grounds, so I recommend paying the resort fee to have access to their parking, fitness center, and beach chairs. The resort is beautiful and the beach and cove are stunning. Great property. I would move in if I could.

Our stay was absolutely fabulous! The house was exactly as described regarding location, appearance and amenities and was very comfortable. We loved the view, the quiet surroundings and were very impressed by the meticulous upkeep of the house and entire resort property. I will definitely recommend this to everyone I know. While we were there -- 1) We had a great tour by Mauna Kea Summit Adventures (maunakea.com) to see the telescopes and stars. Well worth the $! 2) We went on an awesome zipline adventure with Big Island Eco Adventures II 3) If you want to cook fresh fish, go to the fish market just a few miles up the road!

We arrived to find that although advertised it was air conditioned, only the bedrooms were, and the house was very hot. There was no shade outside by the pool so the afternoons were not comfortable on a warm day. The care takers were very kind and tried to make us comfortable. The biggest problem was the steep driveway that was very narrow and had a bend. They had put plastic over steel rebar sticks and one was bent inwards and made a large scratch in our rental car. It also was not lite at night and very hard to see backing up our mini vans. We loved being outside in the morning when it was cool having our coffee and in the evening when the sun was down. It has a nice view and we loved the location. Five minutes from the beach and golf course. There's one tv in the living room and one in one of the four bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms are very small and could not be called sweets. It's an older home that needs updating and the driveway fixed.

Owner response: We have had over 150 different guests stay at our home, and have never had negative comments like this review gives. Our home was designed to be ecologically friendly, and has a passive ventilation system in the dayrooms. Opening the extensive screened exterior glass windows and doors and turning on the ceiling fans, comfortably cools the dayrooms with the ocean breeze. As advertised, the bedrooms are air conditioned. There is ample turn around space between the house and the graceful driveway, which is not meant to be backed up either at night or during the day. The three master bedrooms each measure 400 square feet, and are clearly shown in the website. The house is regularly painted and upholstery replaced, as needed. We do not claim to have the most luxurious furnishings of any home at the Mauna Kea; however, this comfortable single family home is a great value compared to the other single family homes at the resort. Our mission is to provide a wonderful backdrop for extended, active groups wanting to be under one roof, and wanting to enjoy the beach, swimming, warm weather, and all the activities and sights the Big Island has to offer.
