Map & Owner's Profile

Why the Owner Chose Erie
The land has been owned by the family since the Mid 50's. After the Elmwood Home closed, there were two other owners of the surrounding property. I believe one used it to harvest timber, the other gutted what was remaining of the Elmwood home and had the buildings torn down. In the mid 50's, my grandfather, James Evans of Girard, and partners purchased 200 acres including what is now Raccoon park. The cottage was rented to Micheal Obrien, a good tenant whom they sold the cottage to. He raised his family there and lived there until sold back to the family in 1987 when he died. In 1970 the partners sold the acreage of what is now Raccoon Park and kept four 2.5 acre plots west of Raccoon Creek along the lake. Two of those 2.5 acre lots is what the cottage sits on. . It is our piece of paradise all year round and a big piece of our heart and family history.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, fires on the beach, watching incredible sunsets, visiting nearby wineries, spending quality time with family.

Thanks, Rick, for the refund. During our stay, we commented often how even when the weather was so miserable, we were very comfortable at your cottage. The minister at church on Sunday said, "Welcome to dreary Erie." And that about summed the weather up. But, we had a great weekend, despite the rain. We would have loved to sit or eat on the deck, but that was not to be for those few days. We were glad to have the warmth and comforts of home. You did a great job renovating! It was interesting to read and see the photos. Our guys are into construction, one is a home builder, so there were many discussions on how your restorations included the little details that updated things and still, for example, used the original window trim, that type of thing. Having wireless internet certainly helped ease the fact that we couldn't often go outside. We were very happy to have that convenience. We did go to the lake a few times and got soakers from the waves which were quite high even with our 'muckers' on. Thanks for that suggestion. All in all, it was a very positive experience. Your emails, suggestions, websites, facebook page, etc., all helped us greatly. You are doing a great job at promoting a great place and we will be recommending it to others! Thank you

We had such a great time visiting with family, swimming, exploring the beach, playing on the lawn and going for walks. The house had everything we needed and more. It was so comfy and welcoming. We practically lived on the deck w/ the humming birds, cooking out almost every meal. Our 8yr old son begs to go back almost every day. Thanks so much!
Owner response:What a smart 8 year old! Thanks for sharing your experience. We are so happy to hear of the good times had by our guests.

The cottage was everything the owners said it would be. Well equipped, clean, and a great spot to relax. The hummingbirds were fun to watch and we also saw herons and bald eagles. The deck is a wonderful place to gather with friends and family. Convenient to Sheldon Calvary Camp in Conneaut (as well as other camps in the area)!
Owner response:We are glad our descriptions are accurate. The eagle population seems to be continually growing and the deck is wonderful at all times of day. We are so glad these renters had such a nice time.

This was my first time to Lake Erie and I challenge someone to improve on my trip. The cottage was nestled in the woods, with an amazing view from the back deck. It exceeded my expectations with an ample size bathroom and the most comfortable bed I have slept in in years. It had a nice size kitchen and plenty of lounge room in the living room. The screened in porch was nice to read in and had a very nice size table to play games. It was very clean and I felt as if I were in a home instead of a rental. We went kayaking and saw a pair of bald eagles hunting and flying over head, it was awesome to see these birds in action. I highly recommend taking a short stroll to Raccoon Park to have a picnic and play at the park. At sunset it is a must to walk down the path to the water, make a fire, and roast some s'mores. It is a great time! Great place!
Owner response:It sounds like these renters took in some of the good stuff. How great!

Rick and Dianne, The weather wasn't what we hoped for, but you certainly can't be faulted for that! And we still had a great time! We definitely plan to come back and we will take you up on your generous offer when we do. I really appreciate it. I loved your cottage and the lake. We had a camper at Camp Judson (just down the road from your cottage) and I grew up vacationing in that area. It was awesome to go back and spend time together there. We enjoyed the fireplace and loved listening to the old albums on the turntable! You have really kept the place up nice and everything worked great. I really can't think of anything you could add or change to make it better. We had everything we needed for a comfortable, relaxing stay. Valerie really enjoyed reading the book you put together with the history of the cottage. We have 5 teenage kids in our house and Valerie just finished her doctorate in nursing so we have been very busy that past 2 years. She graduated last Saturday and this was our get away to relax and celebrate and we had a great time! Thank you so much. I don't know when we will have a chance to get away again, but when we do, we will certainly see if your cottage is available. Thank you for the quick processing of our deposit too. I will watch for it in the mail. Thank you and God Bless!

Hello Rick, Just wanted to say thank you for letting us stay at your cottage. You have an amazing place there. The weather was perfect and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was difficult, however, explaining to our 2 year old this morning that we couldn't go down to the beach and play. We hope to visit again soon!

Dianne & Rick: Thank you for the prompt return of the deposit. As for the stay at your cottage, it was great. There was nothing that we did not expect when we arrived. The house was clean and orderly and the bed comfortable. Everything worked as described. We are really glad you did take down some trees to see the lake from the kitchen and the bedroom. Outstanding view. We went down to the beach several times to walk and relax. We also had a fire in the one fire pit closer to the house and we could look up and see the stars through the tress. That was great. We can not think of any thing that you could do better. Thanks again for renting us your cottage. Michael
