3 couples in their 50s spent an extending weekend at this cottage soaking in the last of the Autumn scenery and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. We spent a good portion of our time outside, walking along the beach and through the leaves lining the roadway. We loved the massive old trees in the backyard. The accomodations were clean and accurately portrayed in the listing. The kitchen was well supplied with cooking utensils. We loved listening to the oldies on the record player. For us there were no negatives although we did try to connect to the internet but without success (which didnt matter much to us!) The owners were very responsive to our requests. We would, without hesitation, recommend this rental to anyone looking for a place to truly get away from it all!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

All the pictures on this site accurately depict the cottage. What it cannot show is its quaintness, cleanliness, and all the amenities that are provided. The kitchen is well equipped to cook or bake any type of meal and is user friendly. It was hard to decide whether to sit on the deck and take in the beautiful view of the lake or snuggle up on the screened in porch with some coffee and a good book. The owner actually called us during our stay to make sure that everything was to our liking. We are actually are planning to rent the cottage again. Definitely recommendRecommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

What an amazing and relaxing week at the cottage. Sunday night when we arrived we began to realize exactly how lucky we were to be able to call this home for an entire week. This house has everything we imagined and more. We spent many evening on the back porch watching the sun set with the lake as the back drop. What an awesome view! The humming birds were very entertaining with their antics. We saw wildlife everywhere (something we miss tremendously having grown up in the country but don't get where we currently live). Three types of catepillars, frogs, many types of birds, deer, rabbits, woodchucks, and a day we got lucky enough to watch bald eagles "fish" at racoon park next door. We were able to make it down to the water every day and found "treasures" galore. (special rocks, shells and beach glass). One of the days we were here we made a day trip to Cleveland Zoo and when we got back Megan renamed your woods and path to the beach "The Jungle". We went to the jungle often! :) I know tomorrow when we have to leave my daughter is really going to miss being able to see the water from here. She's not the only one! Thank you for sharing your amazing special place. May God continue to bless this cottage. Love and God BlessDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Rick and Dianne: Arrived at your quaint and historic cottage on Monday. Welcomed by hummingbirds and hospitably arranged home to the delight of all in our family. Enjoyed relaxing drinks on the deck in the evenings, day trips to Presque isle and Niagra Falls were terrific. Dinner down the road at Alto Cucina was wonderful. Grilled out everyday, visited the beach to skip rocks and explore with our girls. Visited one time by a friendly skunk. We were surprised and excited that every day was different on the lake. Day 1 was rough and a bit murky. Day two was clear and breezy with waves crashing so loudly we could hear it all night. Day 3 like glass. It was terriffic. You clearly love this cottage; thanks for sharing it.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The cottage was clean, well maintained, and comfortable. The kitchen was awesome!!! It was huge and had everything we could have possibly needed! The deck out back was great! We spend most of our time out there. The beach was not great, it was very smelly. But this was mainly due to the dry summer and completely out of the control of the cottage owners. Over all, we had a lovely trip and wouldn't hesitate to recommand it to others looking for a quiet get away.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

The cottage was in excellent condition. It’s been well maintained, with modern plumbing, lighting, and amenities. The gas grill on the deck was wonderful, and we used it most of the days we were there. The view from the deck is great—you can actually see Lake Erie through a partial clearing in the woods. Privacy is excellent—the cottage sits on a very large wooded area (I won’t call it a lot because the patch of woods is very large). Access to Lake Erie can be had by a (steep at parts) trail on the property which is fine for kids and able-bodied adults, or by walking just down the road to the adjacent park (access for anyone). The hummingbirds were constantly visiting both of the feeders and were a joy to watch. There was lots of other wildlife too. There’s also a screened front porch, which is great for winding down at night before bed. The fire pit is a very short and easy walk for anyone to access. There’s a metal bench and other seating around the pit. My wife had relatives in the area with lots of kids, and we all had a blast roasting marshmallows in the fire pit. The first day we were there, the phone had some issues. The next morning the repairman quickly got it all working. Other than that, everything worked fine. The DSL speeds were not fast enough for our 14 year old son (which was just fine with us, because he ended up spending his time doing other stuff). The cottage is on well water, and the owner recommends bottled water. The nearest grocery store is around 15-20 minutes away, so plan accordingly—stop by there on the way to the cottage and grab a few things (including bottled water) so you have enough to get you through the first night and breakfast. One concern we had was the options of payment: Paypal and check (no credit cards). We no longer (and never again will) have a Paypal account. We were nervous about paying by check, but it ended up not being any problem at all. Our stay was excellent. Our security deposit was returned very promptly (refund check arrived in a week). So in the end, our concerns were about nothing. As I reflect back upon writing this review, this place was great. It’s among the top 2 places we’ve ever stayed. I can’t imagine anyone not really enjoying their stay here. It’s beautiful, secluded, peaceful, fun, relaxing, wonderful. It’s a piece of Pennsylvania history too (but it’s in such great shape, you’d never know it was as old as it is). We would highly recommend it.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

Dianne and Rick: Three sisters from Pittsburgh spent a glorious weekend at the lovely Cottage at Lake Erie. We wanted to thank you both for providing accommodations that left us wanting for nothing. We had absolutely no worries, which allowed us to relax fully and completely. The short stay at the cottage gave us the much needed opportunity to "Hoover the Brain" (an expression learned on a visit to Ireland). We thank you so much for sharing your oasis on the Great Lake. We would love to come back and spend more time there and will definitely try and make that happen.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2008
About the owner: Taken at Raccoon Creek park located next door to the cottage. The cottage is a magical spot to create wonderful memories.
Why the Owner Chose Erie:
The land has been owned by the family since the Mid 50's. After the Elmwood Home closed, there were two other owners of the surrounding property. I believe one used it to harvest timber, the other gutted what was remaining of the Elmwood home and had the buildings torn down. In the mid 50's, my grandfather, James Evans of Girard, and partners purchased 200 acres including what is now Raccoon park. The cottage was rented to Micheal Obrien, a good tenant whom they sold the cottage to. He raised his family there and lived there until sold back to the family in 1987 when he died. In 1970 the partners sold the acreage of what is now Raccoon Park and kept four 2.5 acre plots west of Raccoon Creek along the lake. Two of those 2.5 acre lots is what the cottage sits on. . It is our piece of paradise all year round and a big piece of our heart and family history.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, fires on the beach, watching incredible sunsets, visiting nearby wineries, spending quality time with family.
