Apito - an Upscale 2BR/2BA - Full A/C with Private Pool

Apito is a casually elegant home on the island of St. John located within the National Park boundaries. Completed in June of 2009, this home was built and furnished with the complete comfort and relaxation of guests in mind. Fully air conditioned, it is ecologically sensitive yet delightfully fun and upscale. Located high atop Mamey Peak at approximately 940' above sea level, it is near the geographic center of the island and less than a five minute drive to the famous North Shore beaches. As you enter Apito though its exquisitely carved entry door, you'll be greeted with extensive travertine tile work, rich mahogany and pear wood furnishings, quality finishes and oil rubbed bronze fixtures.
2 large bedrooms and fully tiled bath rooms, each with a king sized bed, pillow top mattresses and high thread count sheets insure a peaceful nights sleep. The very private pool and pool deck area offer spectacular views of Bordeaux mountain, Coral Bay, the East end of St. John and the British Virgin Islands of Norman and Peter. The Lanai (or covered porch), located off of the pool deck, offers respite from the sun and a comfortable couch to lounge, read or take a well deserved nap. The mountain breezes typically make this area many degrees cooler than the lower lying areas of Cruz and Coral Bay.
The kitchen has all of the modern conveniences. A full size dishwasher, energy efficient Liebherr refrigerator, microwave, 5-Burner, dual fuel stove and double oven and a garbage disposal (one of the few on St. John!), along with virtually every cooking utensil a gourmet cook could desire. Because we know how aggravating it is to buy every day items when you stay at a villa, Apito maintains a supply of sugar, flour, herbs, spices , and cooking oils along with dish towels, paper towels, trash bags, baggies, dish and clothes detergents, etc. so you DON'T have to spend hard earned vacation money on the simple necessities of everyday life.
Be sure to check out the web site for pictures and our Construction Blog on how Apito was conceived and constructed!

Home was as pictured..beautiful.Plusses: beautiful finishes, good supply of basic necessities including bug spray, suntan lotion, trash bags, paper towels, and laundry detergent, great view, nice amenities. Minuses: king beds rest on wooden slats that creak when you lay down and then you roll to the middle..need more sturdy platform under the mattresses. Need another side chair in living area so four adults can sit comfortably inside--suggest the owner move the matching side chair from lower suite to upstairs and get a different downstairs chair. Dumpster at corner was MIA during the week so daily drove around St John looking for a place to take trash so we could comply with request to dispose of trash daily. Couldn't find the crock pot--I could have called Alex but decided it wasn't that big a deal so not their issue. All things that can be fixed..location with view is unbeatable and near our favorite beaches..and the breeze up in the mountain kept the no-see-ums away..I managed to get home with a record low of 2 bug bites!Owner response: Thanks Heidi - We appreciate the compliments and the suggestions!

Unbelievable views. Excellent weather up on the mountain (cooler at night, no real need for AC). It is a drive (15 mins) from Cruz bay. A 4X4 vehicle really is a must to get to Apito, given the steep grade and unpaved road. The property manager was extremely friendly and helpful. We plan to go back!Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks Marc - We look forward to your return!

Apito is on the Coral Bay side of the island, which happens to be the side we love. They are so close to the North Shore Beaches and Coral Bay that this is the perfect spot. The driveway is a bit bumpy and exciting at the same time! Once you arrive at Apito, the views are breathtaking of the valley and of the sea! My family and I can't wait to get back. This was perfect for the 4 of us. My husband and myself and my kids (10 and 13). The driveway is paved and even the spots for you to turn around is paved. The owner really has thought of everything! You enter the villa and you see the kitchen, dining room and VIEW. The kitchen has everything you need. Great space and every utensil you can think of!!! We cooked a lot of meals in and didn't once think of something we needed. The family room is quite comfortable and the kids enjoyed being able to play their music in 3 locations from the Ipod. The bathroom is very spacious upstairs and so is the bedroom. My kids stayed upstairs while we were able to have more privacy downstairs. I love the dining area outside overlooking the ocean and the valley. The breezes are amazing!!! The spiral staircase down to the lower half is quite nice. The outdoor covered seating area gives you space in case of an early or afternoon shower - which rarely happened when we were there. The downstairs bedroom was very spacious and even had an extra single bed if you needed it. We loved the pool deck and how much space there was for all of us. The owners didn't leave out any details to make sure your stay was amazing! From the beach chairs, the gas grill and the collection of books and games, you won't want to go home. At least we didin't. Make sure you plan on staying at Apito, you won't regret it!Owner response: Thanks guys! We enjoyed having you stay with us and look forward to your return!

We recently returned from a stay at Apito and were so happy with our choice. From the first contact with the owner Lori, the personal service and true caring about our experience cannot be beat. I got so many nice emails and request for questions she could answer, I felt like by the time we traveled we were staying with friends. The owner's son Alex met us and showed us to the villa, showed us around and how everything worked. He also contacted us the next day to make sure everything was okay. I texted him a couple times during the stay with little questions that he responded to very quickly. The villa is immaculate and very high end. No corners cut here! We only used the upstairs bedroom as it was just us and was closer to the kitchen and living areas. However if you were traveling with another couple or maybe teenagers, the downstairs bedroom is separate enough to allow you both to have your own space, yet offers it's own special view and walk out to pool area. I was disappointed we didn't use the pool more as that was one of my main selling points, but only because the week we were there it was very breezy. It is a really nice pool area with lounge chairs and a wonderful view. We were impressed with the large tile shower in the bathroom! It is very secluded and we didn't hear any other people the whole time we were there. I think I heard a truck honk twice - just in case people were worried about road noise, that was it. We were literally about 5 minutes from the North Shore which made for easy days to the beach. We wanted to explore both sides of the island and it was a convenient location for that. I felt that if there was any problem at all during the stay, Alex would be prompt in resolving it. The A/C was wonderful at night and I'm not sure I would stay anywhere without it. Thank you Buttermore's for sharing this wonderful retreat! We had a truly memorable stay.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank you for the kind words Melanie! I know Lori really enjoyed working with you also and we're glad you had a memorable time. We also really appreciate the time you took to write such a wonderful review and look forward to your return to St John soon. -Lori and Tom

My husband and I stayed at Apito just a few weeks ago and the amazing time we had is still fresh in our thoughts. The home was beautiful and the view was just magical. St. John's has become one of our favorite spots now. Everything at Apito was just wonderful. I really appreciated all the attention to details and the lovely extra little luxury items to use during the stay. Alex was great in giving us advice on where to go from snorkeling to dining. Apito was convenient to everything. Thank you for such a spectacular trip.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

Apito was our vacation home on St John for a great 1 week vacation. We could not have imagined a more thoughtfully designed, and well executed and maintained 2 suite villa. The king suites on separate levels ensured privacy for each party. The a/c and all laundry and kitchen appliances performed perfectly, and we encountered no problems whatsoever. The owner's son was an excellent and pleasant greeter and host, providing any needed instructions and helpful pointers throughout our stay. I would recommend Apito to anyone wishing to spend a St. John vacation at a very special place.Owner response: Thanks George! We thoroughly enjoyed having you stay with us and can't wait for you guys to return!

Stayed at Apito last week with my husband and a friend. The layout of the villa was wonderful - providing private space both upstairs and down and a kitchen with all the amenities. The house was spotless and everything we needed was provided. We were greeted at at the ferry dock by Alex, who had our rental car keys in hand as we arrived very late in the day. He guided us to a local market for a quick shop for provisions and then on up the centerline road - in the dark - to the villa itself. We got a good orientation to the house and the island, with recommendations for snorkeling, eating and shopping. We greatly appreciated the check in call the next morning to see if we needed anything else. The house is just beautiful with comfortable furniture and a great eye for colors and shapes. We explored the island during the day and relaxed at the pool at the house in late afternoon and ate dinner every night on the deck. Highly recommend Apito for a wonderful stay in St. John.Owner response: Thanks Ricki - we enjoyed having you stay with us and hope to see you again soon!

Year Purchased: 2005
About: My name is Tom. Lori, my beloved wife of 26 years, and I have two boys Alex, (now age 22 and living on St. John) and Conner, age 19, although they were much younger when all of this began. My first trip to St. John was in 1978 when my parents chartered a bareboat out of Tortola for a two week vacation. Needless to say, I fell in love with the islands, and the hook was firmly set. While Lori and I have always loved the Caribbean and have traveled to several islands over the years, after the kids were born, we were not able to afford a trip back to the Virgin Islands for a long time. Our first trip to the Virgin Islands as a family finally occurred in 1997. This is the year we finally reached a station in life that allowed us to show our kids the beauty of St. John. We chartered our own boat the following year and have been returning as often as we can ever since. Over the years, we have always dreamed of owning a little piece of this rock, and that dream became a reality late in 2005.
Why Mamey Peak:
We began looking for property on St. John in 2005 and decided to purchase a lot on Mamey Peak for its stunning views, cool mountain breezes and geographically central location. We didn't want the crowded, hustle, bustle of Cruz Bay, but also didn't want to be as far out as Coral Bay or the East End. We wanted the best of all worlds and we think we found it on Mamey Peak.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Mamey Peak is a very small residential area that is surprisingly private yet easily accessible and a convenient distance from virtually any point on the island. One of our favorite things is watching the weather come toward us from the direction of Norman Island and roll through Bordeaux valley on its way to the western end of the island. The breezes make it much cooler and less oppressive than virtually any spot on the island.
