1804 Old Stage sits on 11 acres, but is just minutes from town. Peaceful and private, the back deck overlooks a glade of Douglas Fir trees. The meadow on the North side of the house is great for kids, pets, sketching, lounging, star gazing or hitting golf balls. Pets are welcome. We have a three doghouse kennel as well as loads of room for horses and trailers, tents, mountain bikes, etceteras. Pull out our giant hammock to enjoy reading and napping under the sun. The deck has an enormous old-school barbeque and produces large amounts of delectable grilled cuisine.

The house is full of antiques and artifacts. It is cozy, comfy and lived-in. This house is not for you if you want a pristine, new and sterile environment. This house is for you if you love homes with personality, history and casual elegance. Charmingly intimate, the house is perfect for a honeymoon or romantic get-away, yet also fabulous for entertaining and parties. Formal dining room, fully equipped kitchen, including a vintage commercial waffle-maker, tons of festive, antique table linens make for a good time. The master bedroom is very large, features a king bed and opens out on to the deck. The three remaining bedrooms each have twin beds. The kitchen is spacious, bright and sunny, my favorite room in the house. The dining room also serves as a quiet office/reading room and can accommodate an inflatable mattress for extra guests.

A few miles South is the Mt. Shasta Resort featuring world class golf, tennis, spa and terrific restaurant. Just opposite the resort is Lake Siskiyou, which has camping facilities and a great beach for swimming. The lovely downtown is a three minute drive or an invigorating walk away. The Mt. Shasta Ski Park is a quick 10-15 minute drive and offers spectacular skiing and snowboarding. The ski park is open year round with events and concerts during the summer. All the surrounding towns are full of amazing history and fun to explore. The incredible Stewart Mineral Springs is just up the freeway. Mt. Shasta and the surrounding area is a mountain climber and hiker's dream-come-true. It is also a mecca for sportsmen, with outstanding fishing and hunting. The nature conservancy at the McCloud Reservoir is world-famous for its catch-and-release fly fishing, as are the areas many rivers and lakes. Lava tubes, obsidian mountains, ice caves and other natural oddities abound. Ashland, Oregon's Shakespeare festival is less than one hour away. If you are a pilot, the Dunsmuir Airport is just four miles from the house, and the Weed Airport, with extended runway, is just 8 miles from the house. Contact us for airport pick-up.

Things to be aware of: Our house is old and fragile and takes some special care. It is full of family history and unique things. Admire and use them! We are happy to share this fabulous place with people who will enjoy and respect it. We only have one bathroom which is connected to a septic system. Moderate water use for a large group is a must not to overload the septic tank. As with any house, supervision of small children is important. Please contact us for additional information and photos!

We were a group of 5 women commuting to a retreat which was less than 10 minutes away...so the location was perfect for us. The owner was a jewel to deal with regarding the business transaction - and her property manager a godsend the day we realized we left the key on the counter and locked ourselves out! I walked over, got the key and it was resolved in less than 10 minutes. With 5 of us, we thought only one bath may be an issue, but it was fine. I love the living room - super cozy and begging for you to sit down and read or have some great conversation. The rooms upstairs are really sweet, a great place to land at the end of the day. The masterbed is really comfortable - and if the weather would've been nicer - the access to the deck more a positive. It was quite cold the weekend we were were there. It truly did feel like we were coming home to grandma's house! Almost to a fault - the house is quite packed with - well, stuff...all the closets and drawers have things in them, we did feel like we were staying in someone's home...because we were! The up-side to this, if you need something, you will probabaly find it. My son met me there and spent the night and went through drawers and played detective, reporting back to me the kind of people that owned it! Also - I had an illusion that because the 11 acres were mentioned, that it would feel more secluded...yet there are other buildings on the 11 acres (2 homes + others) and the house is right on Old Stage Coach Rd. BUT - the place was great, our gathering happens yearly and I would certainly go back.

Millions of stars. All the emenities I needed were available. The town is close and the people are great. Hiking and surrounding lakes were like my own private area. I can't wait to go back next year. Thanks Doretta and Jim for making your house available to me.

Funky, but charming for sure. Quiet and rural yet minutes from town. We spent alot of time in the hammock in the shade or under the stars. A great home base, close to the lakes and hiking and small town shopping for the wife and lots of room for the dog, he loved it too. We had a great time just lounging and using the great bar b que. We can't wait to come back next summer or even this winter for the snow. Not sure what the other review was about, we got our full Paypal deposit back in a couple days. If you want a private, affordable, relaxing mountain time this is the place.

This house really felt like a home to me and my family which made our country experience all that more special. This vacation turned out to be truly relaxing (exactly what the doctor ordered) and will definitely be one of those family memories that my kids will never forget! Thank you, Doretta, for allowing us into your special country home. Who knew that being so close to nature would be so healing? I look forward to making this into a tradition and I highly recommend your property to anyone needing a getaway!

Had a terrific experinece in this darling house. The location was so beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. The collection of artifacts and old books kept us adults intruiged for hours while the kids loved the hammock on the lawn and racing around the field. Barbeques on the deck each night with star gazing afterward. A doe and two fawn strolled through the yard every evening. We will definately return.

First of all, I tried to get an hold of the owner for 1 week before our renting date and I couldn't get an hold of them. They were not picking up their phones or answering their email. I had to wait for a day before the night we were supposed to get there, for them to send me all the information concerning the house, where the keys were located... Another bad thing about them is that they said that the refundable security deposit was just in case something was broken but it was a lie. We cleaned the house when we left and it was even cleaner than before we got there, however, the owner did not refund us our security deposit. She kept the deposit saying that we left the house without cleaning anything (not even the dishes) which was a total lie because we brought our own dishes. I can't believe how dishonest these people are. The house was definitely not worth it. I go to Shasta Lake a couple of time every summer and always rent a house/ cabin there, however, this was the worse house and experience ever. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM. The house was old and dirty, owners are unprofessional and not trustworthy.

Owner response: A response to this renter whom we all remember...and to those who read this review; I have know my house keeper for over twenty years, love and trust him. His version of events are not the same as yours. Your initial email to me after your departure stated that you loved the house and would rent it again. It was not until we decided to withold a portion of the cleaning/security deposit to compensate my housekeeper for the additional work that you become angry and made up such a terrible story. Doretta

We had a family reunion at this house and loved it. It had plenty of room for all 10 of us (with the kids in sleeping bags in the living room). Everyone was comfortable. Our dogs were delighted with the fenced yard. All the linens and bedding were lovely and Doretta is most generous in sharing them with guests. We had a minor problem with the toilet backing up and perhaps one bathroom for such a large place is asking a lot but Doretta's plumber is close by and easily available. It is convenient to town and 10 miles away is Castle Lake, a treasure of a warm, beautiful mountain lake. Doretta, the owner, was warm, enthusiastic, generous and completely available. I can't think of a better place for a casual, relaxed family vacation.

About the owner: Bay Area Business, Mt. Shasta soul. We both run our own businesses. Love San Francisco and life here, but escape to glorious Mt. Shasta or Southern Thailand for decompression!

Why the Owner Chose Mount Shasta:
My family has had a home in Mt Shasta since 1910. My great Aunt was City Clerk and Notary public in the 1920's. There are five of us in the charming local cemetery. I have Mt. Shasta City in my blood. My father was an avid fly fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman, my mother loved hiking and painting, us kids loved everything about this incredible area, especially the Lemurians!

The Unique Benefits at this House:
One of the Seven Spiritual Wonders of the World, Mt. Shasta itself has a truly magical aura. The air, water and even the 'vibes' of this area are restful and healing. That aside, there is truly no place as spectacular and as fun! It is a recreational paradise in all seasons. It is also a creative muse to artists of all kinds. Amazing!
