About Ruth Altes

We moved to the beautiful and special area here in Mt. Shasta full time about 2 years ago from Sonoma County. We have been travelling to this area for the past 7 years when we purchased the chalet for our use as a vacation home. We knew the area was special and was the place we wanted to raise our two young boys so we built a new house and opened up our wonderful chalet for others to enjoy.

Ruth Altes purchased this chalet in 2006

Why Ruth Altes chose Mount Shasta

This house is situated on the side of the mountain that we love. We love the landscape and the weather on this side of the mountain, it is typically cooler in the summer and we are fortunate to get our fair share of snow. We don't get the wind that the more western side of Mt. Shasta area gets and we typically get the same snow fall that the ski park enjoys at their base. We are not in the city, have few neighbors and have the mountain as our back yard. We ride our quads, snowmobiles, bikes, horses, and even hike right from the property. We are close enough to town and all of the lakes, streams and rivers that we also enjoy all of the water sports and fishing. We remodeled the house when we bought it in 2006, so it has unique features and has a great layout to accommodate many people.

Beautiful location, incredible cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Chalet, it is such a warm, cozy cabin. The decor is incredible, the kitchen is filled with everything you need, and the wood stove keeps the cabin nice and warm. We couldn't have asked for better!

Great house- uncomfortable beds- no streaming music/movies allowed

  • 3 of 5

Over all the house is great. We had 4 families stay together for 3 nights. The main level has the kitchen, living room, dining room and one bedroom/bathroom. The upstairs has 3 more bedrooms and a bathroom. The main and upper floors is where the 4 couples spent the night. Each morning we would all wake up and complain about how old/bad/uncomfortable the beds are. The one on the main floor is slopped so you roll together. The one upstairs at the end of the hall is 20 years old and left me hurting for a week after we got home. None provided a comfortable night's rest.

Down stairs was the children's lair and it was wonderful! The two bed nooks were the most comfortable place to sleep in the whole house! All the kids (6) slept down there and were happy.

If there mattresses were replaced, I would stay at this home in a heart beat. Nice location and good layout of home.

The other oddity/disappointment is that the home uses a dish or something so they do not want you streaming any music or movies. For us, that was a pretty big deal. We came up in the winter and there was zero snow. It would have been nice to let the kiddos stream some movies with hot cocoa at night. Not sure if there are other options for internet in the area, maybe the owner is stuck with this set up.

Owner's Response: Thank you Jessica for the feedback. The house stays rented through out the year and so we rely on our guests to let us know if something that we aren't aware of needs attention. We have not had anyone complaints of the bed situation, but we will definitely look into it. I know we try and upgrade mattresses as well as linens, etc regularly so I will definitely be looking to upgrade. As for the dish, unfortunately in this remote area we just don't have any other options, this house is not located in town and therefore dish is our only option and we have purchased the largest package that there is. I wish we had a different solution but that is all we can get here in Mt. Shasta. It is typically not a problem especially since most people utilize the movies supplied in the house or bring their own CD's. My apologies for the inability to stream movies. Thank you very much for your input we really appreciate it!

Great house with lots of beds, we had 9 adults and 1 two year old and it was very comfortable. We loved how close it's located to the center and the mountain itself. We also enjoyed walking and exploring around the property, thank you for the awesome family trip!

Perfect Family Reunion!

  • 5 of 5

Ruth's chalet was the ideal setting for our 16-person family reunion for ages 4-70! Four generations of us sat on the porch, made breakfast together, and spent our days at McCloud Falls and Lake Siskiou. Mid-September was lovely weather, not crowded at all. The chalet was so cozy, we didn't want to leave it, and made our dinners there instead of going out. Ruth is attentive and accessible. We were lucky to rent the chalet -- it books quickly. We are keeping this chalet in mind for a potential return, for sure!
