The Fjell House:Beautiful Private Sandy Beachfront Villa /Pool
Year Purchased: 2009
Why the Owner Chose Cotton Valley Shores
We started online looking at properties in the Caribbean. We wanted to stay in the USA. Visiting St. Croix does not require a passport and you have all the safety features of staying in the USA. Also, getting to and from St. Croix is easy in that there are direct flights from Miami, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, and Charlotte. We live in Raleigh, NC and can quickly get to St. Croix and back in one day of travel. We wanted a house with a great view and a great sandy beach and we believe Fjell house is the best!! Our neighbors, Margi and Susie will gladly work with you in making travel reservations.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Being a West Indian Architectural house it is open air. That means the trade winds and breezes circulate right through the house. It has a northern exposure and that also helps keep the house cool and comfortable. It is shaded by two huge mahogany trees which helps maintain the shade. Also you see butterflies flit throughout the property and the birds in the mahogany trees will talk to you throughout the day. A birdwatcher's paradise!! The bedrooms are air-conditioned for a comfortable night's sleep. A very private sandy beach and backyard.
The history on this house is phenomenal. It was built in the 1950's by a Norwegian Sea Captain named Olsen. He obviously named it "Fjell" which in Norwegian translates to "mountain" because of the view of Buck Island appearing like a mountain out of the Caribbean blue waters. The home has been the scene for countless weddings, anniversary celebrations, family reunions, etc. over the years. Mary Simpson was the owner for over 40 years and invited countless guests to this retreat. The guest book is always a buzz to read with adventures and new discoveries by each and every guest. Mary employed Annetta to help with the house and her dog Silvia was a fixed canine companion for every guest. Even though Mary, Annetta, and Silvia are no longer at Fjell, the Land's look forward to maintaining the wonderful vacations, weddings, and family reunions for the future. You can feel the "love" in the house!!!
Owner's Map of Cotton Valley Shores
My wife and I spent our honeymoon at Caneel Bay in St. John 22 years ago. We have visited and cruised the entire Caribbean, North, South, and West in search of the perfect retirement site. We believe that we have found it with Fjell House in the East End district of St. Croix. Fjell House is a historical figure in St. Croix and was built by a Norwegian Sea Captain in the 1950's. "Fjell" is Norwegian for "mountain." It has a beautiful private sandy beach with pool overlooking the beautiful National Park, Buck Island.

It's been 40 years since we were in St. Croix and as we return several family members later with spouses and grandchildren we came together to stay at this lovely beach home. What a wonderful time we all shared and the view ... fabulous! We loved the neighbors who added such hospitality and our buddy, the friendly dog from next door, who visited us in the mornings. May all those that come after us be as blessed as we were!

Happy New Year! We had an amazing time at your home. The view is beautiful and the accommodations are great. We especially loved the Blue Water Terrace - food and service was the best on island. Point Udall, Big Beard and shopping downtown were some of the highlights of our trip!

My friends and I were so pleased with the layout, location and amenities that Fjell House Villa gave us for our April retreat week. The open West Indian concept brought light breezes into the villa as we enjoyed the amazing view of Buck Island and the ocean waters. The layout was great for informal gatherings or formal classes which we enjoyed in the Great Room. We loved the kitchen layout which helped us to prepare meals and clean up with ease. The seven of us enjoyed having our own private bath and the beds were extremely comfortable. We will be back, I'm sure! Thanks to the Lands for opening up your wonderful villa to us and to the folks at the realty company for all their help and warm welcome.

We stayed at your home in mid-January, and I just haven't gotten around to reporting to you how much we enjoyed it. It helped, of course, that the weather was perfect during our stay, but it is such a nice place to unwind and relax. It was almost too nice, if that's possible, because it was hard to get on the plane and come back to the States and go back to our normal life. It seems like everything happens in waltz time (3/4 time) on the island, and sometimes, in the middle of winter up here, that's really nice.

What a grand view. Your breath is taken away when you walk into the Fjell House. The restaurants close to the house are the very best. We loved Good Spirits and Blue Water Terrace (just across the street). We toured the island and snorkeled at Buck Island, shopped, and had great food. The island tour with Sweeny was excellent. Had a great tour and lunch in Fredricksted. The dogs next door spent much of the time with us and we loved them. We came back to 20 degree weather in Florida. Should have stayed another week.
Owner response:Thank you for your kind response to The Fjell House. Liz and I believe we have one of the most beautiful unique places on Earth to call our Southern Home. We agree that the view is breathtaking. We look forward to having you return next year. Sincerely, Herb and Liz Land

Walk into the main house and experience the view of the pool and the ocean in the background and you will need to pinch yourself to be reminded it's real. A fabulous location; a short drive to town and within walking distance to a terrific restaurant on the hill. There was always a breeze blowing through the house and the air-conditioned bedrooms made the nights extremely comfortable. A fantastic place to watch the stars. We counted 48 shooting stars during our stay. Book this place!

Our week at Fjell House was wonderful. The house stays cool because of it's open air set up. The views are breathtaking from the house to the pool to the beach. Herb and Liz were very accommodating and available to answer any questions that I had. I would recommend this villa to anyone as a perfect location for vacation on St. Croix.

"We just got back yesterday from a fabulous trip! We loved the house and thoughtful amenities Herb and Liz had ready for us: simple things like enough toilet paper, luxury bedding and the extensive kitchen gadgets. When we walked into the home for the first time, our jaws dropped at the view! The pool was wonderful too and my husband and son got a lot of use out of it. Our little granddaughter turned into a fish while we were there. We will definitely be back! One hint: do the Buck Island tour on your first day or two. It was the best snorkeling I've ever seen in my life!
