This home is very special to us. It was built in 1935, and stayed in the same family until we were blessed to be able to purchase it in 2003. It took us 2 1/2 years of major renovation to restore it to it's original charm. It offers the cozy comfort of an old home, but with all the new and modern conveniences. Tucked away on 5 acres, the setting is serene and peaceful. An 800 square foot front porch invites you to view the panoramic view of the majestic Blue Ridge mountains, while listening to the stream cascading beside the house. Inside , the home has a large living room with an oversized stone wood/burning fireplace. The kitchen has stainless appliances which includes a gas 5 burner stove. Since I love to cook, it is well equipped with cooking utensils. The dining room is my favorite room--it has a wood/burning fireplace and a library filled with a wide variety of wonderful books. There is a bedroom downstairs with a trundle bed--which can sleep two. Off the bedroom is a playroom--great for kids, and playing cards and games. Upstairs are three bedrooms, two of which I consider master suites. They both have a private sitting room off the bedroom. One has it's own private bath, the other has a private bath which can be shared with the third bedroom. This master has a wood/burning fireplace and a balcony with the beautiful mountains to look at. Each master has a queen size bed, the third bedroom has two queen size beds. All three baths have a tiled shower, along with heated tiled floors. One bath upstairs has a separate tub.
This home is a very private retreat, but is just three miles from Black Mountain with an incredible grocery store, fun restaurants and great shopping (one being a Don Caster outlet)-WOW-can you get some fabulous deals on these beautiful clothes. Fifteen miles to the west is Asheville, which of course has the Biltmore, but it also has the most wonderful spa at the Grove Park Inn. Spending a day at the spa, and then coming back to the quietness of this home is so very special. You owe it to yourself to enjoy this mountain retreat--you will not be disappointed.

Great place. Exactly as described and very suitable for our big family. Very woodsy location but only minutes from the town of Black Mtn. Big front porch was good for gathering and barbecuing. Easy to get to from I 40. Hiking trails were close and doable by all. Likely a good place in summer with the creek next to the property and lots of rhododendron. We will go back. If you go, don't miss a short trip to Pisgah Brewing only 8 minutes away.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

Our family truly enjoyed this mountain retreat. The weather was just warming up and we didn't take advantage of the front porch quite as much since we were hiking most every day, all day. The hiking trails on the grounds of the assembly were nice. Catawba Falls was the best hike of all...beautiful falls and mildly challenging trails and then some more challenging sections at the top. This house was a great place for our children and our dog. We found it to be very comfortable and enjoyed our stay very much! The house was definitely well-stocked as compared to prior rentals; the owners seemed to anticipate what families would need, but would be least likely to travel with! Black Mountain is one of our favorite destinations. Plan a dinner at The Red Rocker Inn and save room for their Bumble Pie, or if you like a lighter meal, The Dark Street Deli is fantastic. Fresh Pizza and Pasta has wonderful food too, including gluten-free pizza and a fantastic veggie pizza. Kilwins for ice cream or fudge is a must as are some of the wonderful coffee shops. Take a hike in Montreat, too, if you have time, as the views of the Seven Sisters are beautiful! Lake Tomahawk Park is a fun place to take a good walk after lunch and has a nice playground for young children. We can't wait to be back next year, or maybe sooner!Recommended for: Pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

What a great place to be with all the children and grandchildren. We appreciated the fact that the house had a lived-in feel and was not so perfect that we could not relax. While there, we found ourselves thinking about when we could come again. We enjoyed hiking the trails on the assembly grounds and spent a morning hiking up to Catawba Falls and also some time in Black Mountain. The location worked well for all of us and also NC extended family who were able share a dinner with us. Since we have a piano player in the family, we were had fun around the baby grand and the grandchildren enjoyed all the toys and puzzles. Could the porch have been more perfect for early morning coffee, a cookout or late evening s'mores around the fireplace? Waking up to beautiful sunrise views and the sound of the stream outside was enough to spoil us. Enjoyed the updated kitchen and bathrooms - my only recommendation would be to add some good kitchen cutlery. While there, I kept wondering about the story behind the house and its relation to the assembly - would loved to have seen a history about the house available for visitors.Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, families with young children.

This home is wonderful; my family and I (8 in all, plus 2 dogs) stayed comfortably. The house is so rustic, but yet updated. It is very cozy; not at all like a "stripped down rental." We felt as if we were staying at a relatives home; it was fantastic! We decided to make this a yearly trip. Already looking forward to the next time!Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Kimberly and Justin: I am so appreciative of your comments concerning my home. It is heart warming to know other guest enjoy my home as much as I do. I hope you have an opportunity to return to Black Mountain and my home. Enjoy the upcoming summer. Regards, Susan

We've stayed here twice so far and thoroughly enjoyed our stay both times. The house has great character and is in a great location to Black Mountain. It's not hard to get to, but still feels very private and has a great view. Even the bedrooms have an amazing view. This is a great pet-friendly option with privacy and nice separate spaces (& priv bathrooms and even a private deck) for each couple or family staying there. The covered porch is absolutely amazing... weather permitting, we found ourselves wanting to spend most of our time there. As rustic as the rest of the house is, the kitchen and bathrooms have been updated well including radiant floor heat, dishwasher, nice counter tops, etc. Loved it and will likely be staying there again soon!Recommended for: Pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Jason: I apologize for being so late in responding to your review of my home. You and your family are always welcome and I hope to see you next year. Regards, Susan

We loved our weekend stay at this awesome property. The location is perfect for activities in Black Mountain but remote enough to really allow you to relax and unwind. There are many places to hike and nice paved roads that provide walking trails even in the rain. The house was perfect for our group of 8 adults. It is large and well furnished and very comfortable. We particularly loved the porch (especially on that rainy day!).Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Barbara I am so glad you enjoyed your visit. The views of Blue Ridge Mountains from the porch can be awesome at this time of the year. I hope you have the opportunity to come back to Black Mountain next year. Best regards, Susan

Thanks again for letting us use your home. The place was beautiful and very clean. Property location was tucked away and hidden. Porch was the best part of the home with amazing views. Overall, the place is extremely spacious with plenty of rooms, many of which we did not utilize. We have no complaints whatsover and look forward to being back.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

Hidden property close to the town of Black Mountain offered a great family retreat. Lots of room for everyone, including the dogs. The cabin is upscale yet rustic, the best of both worlds. We will definitely return, and can't wait to sit on the porch again with a cup of coffee and enjoy the mountain views.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Lisa: I apologize for being late in getting a response back to you. I am thrilled you enjoyed my house. I look forward to having you visit with me again and having a cup of coffee on the porch. Susan

We stayed over a long weekend and wished we'd reserved it longer. A lot of rentals cram as many beds as possible into various rooms - not here. The beds/bathrooms are realistically proportionate, great care has been taken to make this home appealing to adults yet safe/easy for pets and children. The home is well-kept, very clean, but very inviting - spatial, yet cozy. You feel as though you're in the middle of nowhere, but conveniences and 'civilization' are close by. Rental terms are easy and the view is fantastic. I could have stayed on the porch 24/7. Thank you, Susan, for making this weekend so special - we will be back!Recommended for: Pet owners, girls getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: I so appreciate your positive comments---I have strived to fine tune the responsability of keeping my home in perfect condition. I was encourged to put my home on VRBO by some friends, and finally did it in June of 2010. Nedless to say, there were some issues that had to be addressed and changes made. But I now have my "team" who makes sure everything is in perfect condition each time a guest stays at my home. I am glad to hear from each of you that my home was both inviting and relaxing. Thank you for taking the time to send a review in writing, and you are welcome to go back at any time---Susan

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2003
Why the Owner Chose Black Mountain:
This area is my "heaven on earth"--I grew up on the assembly grounds where this home is located. Since my parents were friends of the owners of the house, I would go and sit on the front porch while my parents visited. I always loved the wonderful old home--never thinking it would ever be available. But, it did become available, and my husband, John and I were fortunate to be able to purchase it. My childhood "dream home"!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
I love the solitude, but yet it's not isolated from amenities. I love to take long walks on the assembly grounds, and hike the mountain trails located on the grounds. The house is perfect for entertaining large groups of friends and family. Last year we had our first annual family reunion there, and it was a very relaxing and incredibly wonderful time.
