Humphrey's Hideaway is a charming three bedroom cabin located in the lush, gorgeous Hickory Nut Gorge in the small, quiet community of Bat Cave. The property is perfectly situated in the ideal central location to enjoy a variety of destinations and activities in the region. It is located just minutes from must-see Chimney Rock and Lake Lure and less than 20 miles from Asheville, Black Mountain and downtown Hendersonville. There are more activities and restaurants to enjoy than you will have time to do! One of the best things about this property the ABUNDANCE of things to do within a few miles, combined with a home that makes you feel like you are at a luxurious retreat. This beautiful cabin has a flowing waterfall that cascades beside it and a river flowing in front. Enjoy breathtaking views and stunning water sounds from the numerous decks of this amazing, unique property. A large bar on the back deck overlooks the river, providing gorgeous views and mesmerizing water sounds. A large stone fire pit sits across from the waterfall deck, which is a guest favorite; perfect for making S'mores for the family or for enjoying a romantic evening with a glass of wine by the waterfall. The abundance of ferns, wildflowers and birds will make you feel like you are in an enchanted forest! Very few rental homes offer such a central location combined with a lavishly furnished home on a lush mountainside with a river and waterfall to come home to enjoy. Not to mention a children's room FULL of so many games, toys, movies, books, art supplies, etc. that will entertain themselves for hours, allowing parents time alone to relax..which is a guest favorite!

This is not your average vacation rental home! We spent over 5 years trying to make this the most comfortable, well stocked, and enjoyable vacation rental you have experienced. And that is exactly what we always hear back from our guests! This home is that is appointed with everything you could want, from high quality furnishings (Tempurpedic bed in master bedroom, for example) to the wonderful stocked children's room mentioned above. On top of all traditional supplies we provide everything from paper products, soap, shampoo, laundry supplies, fully stocked coffee bar with Keurig coffee maker as well as the K-cups themselves. We also have a pack-n-play, high chair, swing and stroller for your young children. You will be very surprised at just how comfortable your stay will be here, and how lightly you can pack since we provide so much for you.

Enjoy tons of hiking, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, fishing, dining out, zip lining, horseback riding, golfing, antiquing, riding on a pontoon boat, riding motorcycles or bicycles, gem mining or winery touring within minutes from this centrally located home. When you book with us, We provide you with an extensive list of local attractions/web links based on our personal experiences and raving reviews from guests, and have many maps/flyers at the cabin providing an easy way to help you create an agenda an amazing vacation! We stock our materials from the Chamber of Commerce/Visitor's Center, saving you a trip there.

Do you like hiking as much as we do?? You wouldn't believe how many hiking trails there are in this area, including the many off the Blue Ridge Parkway, whose countless views are so breathtaking you will think it was worth the trip here in itself. Have you heard of DuPont State Forest and its amazing waterfalls, as seen in the Hunger Games? Pisgah National Forest? The natural Sliding Rock? Skinny Dip Falls? Look them up! You will make incredible family memories at these spectacular locations. You can do them all from here. And PLEASE look up Asheville, Lake Lure, Hendersonville, Black Mountain, Brevard, etc. before visiting. There are so many things to do! The surrounding areas are ALL wonderful.

Several miles down the road towards Asheville on Hwy 74 (let me point out that this gorgeous section of road is a NC Scenic Bypass), lies Hickory Nut Gap Farms. You can get local grass fed beef & seasonal vegetables. They also have a barn play area for kids and a horse farm if you enjoy riding. Go several miles further and you are in Fairview, where you can visit a local creamery if you love fresh cheese, or a country Amish store. A few miles further puts you in Asheville... Where there is more to do than you will ever have time to do! Some world famous Asheville destinations include the Grove Park Inn and Spa (groveparkinn.com) or the Vanderbilt family's breathtaking Biltmore Estate (biltmore.com). We have lived here 5 years now, and are still exploring new restaurants and activities. If you had traveled a few miles in the opposite direction on Hwy 74, there is Chimney Rock state park, which is amazing! A mile further and you are in Lake Lure (http://www.townoflakelure.com/town-parks-recreation.php), with a waterpark and gorgeous sandy beach, also offering boat rentals. This is a must see stop if you visit this area, especially if you have children. Or cut across on Hwy 64 (only a few miles back) and you will head into Hendersonville, another great little town. During apple harvest there are orchards everywhere, many offering activities for families to enjoy. Downtown Hendersonville has many wonderful shops and restaurants to enjoy, along with the Flat Rock Playhouse nearby

Here is a fascinating bit of history regarding the property... As told by locals who knew him personally, Humphrey Bogart's uncle used to own this property, and Humphrey used to visit during the summers when he was a boy. Miss Ollie, who lives up the street, notes that his uncle had a penchant for the bottle and locals referred to this place as Stagger Hill. You might be able to guess why! The original cabin has been replaced with the current home, but remnants of the old fireplace still remain and have been incorporated into the fireplace you can now enjoy in the master bedroom.

If our cabin is booked, or if you need additional accommodations for a larger party, we recommend two great properties owned by our neighbor that also feature a waterfall just a few miles away in Gerton.

About Melissa Scott

That's me, the owner, with my adorable son Cole. Hence the huge smile on my face. I am a Special Education teacher, lover of life and nature, and most importantly...a mother who is supremely dedicated to that adorable blonde boy.

Melissa Scott purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Melissa Scott chose Smoky Mountains

What?? I only have 2000 words to encapsulate why THIS property is so amazing?

My son and I relocated to this area several years ago when I took a local teaching position. I started looking at local homes with the intent of buying a home in downtown Asheville and capitalizing on the seemingly endless exciting opportunities it offered. But then... I fell madly in LOVE. With THIS HOME!!!

When I first saw this place, I was blown away. I couldn't BELIEVE I was lucky enough to find this breathtaking mountain cottage perched on the side of the mountain, surrounded by water, AND in such close proximity to Asheville, Hendersonville, Lake Lure and Chimney Rock.

Let me backtrack and tell you JUST how enchanting this location was; I was willing to put in a full asking price offer within hours of seeing the home, and it was in SHAMBLES! It was a dilapidated shell at that point; a foreclosure that had been gutted. No plumbing, electrical, flooring. No kitchen. Nothing. But it was IN THIS MAGICAL SPOT! We were surrounded by trees, birds, wildflowers, a trickling waterfall, and a rushing river. It felt like no place I had ever visited. I knew that I had so much love in my heart for this place that I could make it into a dream home. It would be worth the tremendous amount of hard work and suffering that lied ahead. So...we moved in. We put mattresses on the floor and camped out indoors while we worked. Our bathroom was the woods. Our shower was the river. We went to bed when it was dark because we had no electricity. This was our life for several months, but we didn't even care! We loved this setting so much it was worth it. Over the next 5 years, with much love and attention to detail, we made this place into the beautiful place you now see.

We hope you will enjoy the magic of this place as much as we have, while we now spend some time in our city condo. We are so happy to share our home with you!

Our experience at Humphrey's Hideaway was pure perfection!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had not been on a vacation in a couple of years! My heart is devoted to the montains. Being in and around them rejuvenates my mind, body and spirit. I focused our search near the Blue Ridge Mountains. I have always loved Asheville and surrounding areas. I must have spent hours purusing through rental property after rental property, looking for that one special place; a place that was perfect. I am really particular in what I want: unique, tastefully decorated, comfortable and cozy, fully accomodating, mountainous location near places to see and activities to partake in. I know that perfectionism isn't actually attainable, but we managed to find it anyway at Humphrey's Hideaway. Melissa and Cole's cabin is more than that. It's a home. As soon as you arrive, you feel you are at home, not just a guest in somebody else's. We were grateful to have the opportunity to bring our two small dogs with us (their first road trip). There are an abundance of things to do in this area. Our favorites were just travelling the Parkway in our new Jeep Wranger (tops off); walking around Ashevile; visiting Chimney Rock, and just relaxing at the cabin. It was perfection! We got home three days ago. I'm ready to go back!!

Great stay!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is as charming as it appears in the pictures and the location is great. Really a great, relaxing stay and Melissa made sure that everything was taken care of. I've already recommended the cabin to a friend! Make sure you bring supplies for S'mores.

Lovely, charming and very accomodating

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time at Humphrey's Hideaway! The property is in a perfect location for day trips, but the home is so charming that we didn't want to venture out every day. Melissa and Cole have created a truly special home and we are delighted that they chose to share it. We enjoyed our stay so much that we've already booked again!

Pretty house!

  • 4 of 5

We loved the house but the access was daunting. Lots of steps. (Not great for older folks). Really great once you get up there. Pet friendly which was wonderful. Cute back yard. No place on the property to walk the dogs though and the street below is pretty busy. I would say the home is great for families with kids. Lots to explore.
