Cruz Bay house description
CONGRATULATIONS FOR HAVING DISCOVERED ST JOHN.
Now let us introduce you to INNSTEAD, our private family home.
Located only 1/2 mile from downtown Cruz Bay, it nestles high on a hillside and thus offers wonderful views over Pillsbury Sound, St Thomas and the outer islands. St John boasts of 17 sandy beaches all within a 5 minute to a half hour drive.
Innstead has two bedrooms, both with their own bathrooms. The Master Bedroom (queen) Suite is on the first level, the NEWLY REFURBISHED Studio Suite (king or twins, ) has its own private patio and entrance. It also has views of the bays and hills of St Thomas. Since this large room has table, chairs, and small refrigerator, the arrangement offers privacy for a second couple or makes a perfect studio apartment for your children or grandchildren to have their own place.
The house comes fully equipped and you need only to bring your personal items and clothing. Since the island lifestyle is very casual, shorts and a t-shirt will be appropriate everywhere.
This makes travel easier.
From the back-entry porch you step into a fully equipped NEWLY RENOVATED, galley kitchen. (new stainless gas stove, 2 new refrigerators and a new wall with storage and work counter) There is a small breakfast area at the end of the kitchen, but we mostly use it as a computer station. The house has WiFi and a docking station.
The dining area with its 8 foot teak table is on one end of a large covered and secluded balcony that extends the width of the house. This end of the balcony is surrounded by the branches of a Banyan tree. Little yellow Banana Quits and Hummingbirds entertain you with their antics at the feeders and birdbath. The remainder of this spacious area has lounge chairs and tables where the views of the sail boats and cruise ships plying the waters of Pillsbury Sound are a constant source of interest. It is here on this wonderful porch that you will want to gather every evening after a busy day of activities or just sun-soaking and hanging in the water. Here you can experience the spectacular sunsets as they light up the outer islands, and smile as you watch the distant lights of St Thomas come on. As the sun goes down, the night-blooming flowers along the railings open and their fragrance is picked up by the the cooling Trade Winds, filling the air with sweetness. About that time the tiny tree frogs start their symphony and you realize you are hungry.
With several small supermarkets a short distance away (an advantage of living closer to town) you may choose to grill something, or pick up dishes from a gourmet deli or bring home the best BBQ from Joe's. If it is to be a night out, the choices are numerous: from an up-beat cafe on the water to a 4-star dining experience in an old stone villa. Our Guest Book will give you specifics on many restaurants and you may add a new one that is a favorite of yours.
For those of you who have programs you do not want to miss, the living room has cable TV and DVDs are available to rent down town.
Surrounded by beaches, water activities are a primary focus. Snorkeling is good everywhere. The deeper waters that have coral shoals or cliffs along the sides of the beaches, offer the widest variety of fish and other aquatic wildlife. But even on the beaches with pure white sand, silver angel fish and the unique needle fish that swim just under the surface, are beautiful to watch. The shiny schools of 'minnows' attract the pelicans and it is a joy to see these awkward looking birds soar and dive. One of the most interesting trips is to join an outing on a large catamaran that will take a group of people up the Sir Frances Drake Channel to special snorkeling locations. They do an excellent job and the excursion will be memorable. Fishing trips are also easy to arrange.
The National Park Service at Cinnamon Bay has rentals of almost anything you could wish for with para-sailing, sea kayaking, paddle-boarding and surfing to name only a few of the opportunities. They also sponsor hikes and other outings. Annaberg, a restored 17th century Sugar Mill, is open year round and it features interesting events during high season. There are many old ruins that have yet to be excavated and they are great fun to explore on your own.
One certainly cannot omit the shopping. Beautiful jewelry stores abound in Cruz Bay along with fine clothing, local crafts and famous spice shops, loaded with gifts to take home.
PERSONAL COMMENTS ABOUT INNSTEAD and ST JOHN.
We discovered this special island in 1987 and were captivated.
We bought the house in 1993 and we return whenever we can get away. When we cannot be there we are happy to share it with guests, many of whom return year after year. They tell us it is the best value on the island.
Come winter, who in the north doesn't yearn for sand, sun and the warm Caribbean waters? We also think that spring, summer and fall are special in their own ways. Innstead is a perfect spot that one or two couples or a family could make their personal place, while discovering the marvels of a Caribbean vacation on an island that has so many sandy beaches and superb snorkeling locations.
St John has a laid-back atmosphere with a gentle and more courteous way of life. In 1955 Laurence Rockefeller donated 75% of the island to the Federal Government for a National Park. This has ensured the preservation of its natural amenities. Wild donkeys, ancestors of the work animals from the time of the sugar mills, roam freely and goats keep the ball fields open for childrens soccer games and adult's softball and Frisbee tournaments. These fields also host local Fish Frys, the proceeds of which support programs like the Children's Steel Drum Band. If you are fortunate enough to have one available, try not to miss it.
With so much to choose from, a vacation on St John is a perfect way to have memorable experiences in one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean.
We would be pleased to rent INNSTEAD to you as your special island home to return to after a glorious day in the sun.

" Hi Mary! We love, love, love it here! This is our favorite vacation rental by far; we love your beautiful little home. We have already snorkeled three different beaches/reefs, hiked into Brown Bay and explored some extensive hidden-by-the-jungle ruins, and explored some places to eat we had not gone to before. It's already been a perfect get away and we have so much time left! Thank you for opening your home to strangers; we appreciate every minute here."

Interesting Restaurants and Relaxing Time
We decided to have Amy's birthday dinner at Miss Lucy's in Coral Bay. We had a table right on the water and the food was delicious. We ate at Fatty Crab twice. It was very different, but very good. We had a wonderful, relaxing time at Innstead, thank you for sharing your home. We already miss the porch and the wonderful colors of the Caribbean.

Living on the Deck
Thanks, Mary We really loved staying in your lovely home and of course, did most of our living on the deck. I especially liked having my early morning coffee watching the antics of the Bananaquits. Mary Anne expedially loved Soloman Beach as we had it to ourseoves most mornings for an hour or two. Also, tell Viky thanks for us as she was very gracious and very helpful. We will definitely recommend Innstead to anyuone who inquires about places to stay or about our time on St John Cheers

Lovely HomeGuest comment entered by owner
I just want to say we enjoyed our stay at your lovely home on St John. We spent every minute we could on the porch enjoying the view as well as the various birds, frogs iguanas chickens and one fery large (and obviously lost) crab. Vicky is a gem and she took very good care of us. She even called several times during our stay to check in. The funny thing was that we were never there when she called and only discovered her messages on the machine the day before we left.

Great Location! Close enough to the convenience of downtown, yet your spot is secluded enough, giving us all the privacy we would want. We explored the island and the beaches each day and then came back to enjoy the setting sun on Cruz Bay. We wanted for nothing: seems like you thought of everything from the sell-stocked and efficient kitchen to the comfortable homey touches throughout. Great photo ops with views and vistas everywhere we ventured on the island. Not to mention those we captured right from your back porch. A wonderful and memorable vacation spot!vacation

A Dream Week
A Dream Week
We returned to Innstead where we had first stayed more than a decade ago. We found this little villa just as beautiful with some upgrading adding to its charm. You just can't beat the beautiful balcony view and setting, the sound and sight of native birds and lush vegetation surrounding the house. The sunsets are amazing. The experience of clean, comfortable and convenient quarters where you could walk to downtown Cruz Bay just added to the overall experience of this amazing place St. John Virgin Islands. Innstead is a wonderful place for one or two couples who want to have privacy yet share the same house or for a family wanting a private home to return to following a day at one of the Islands snorkeling beaches or from hiking on the national park trails. Thanks for a delightful week.

About the owner: High school sweethearts, Jerry and I have been married for 56 years. We have 2 boys and 5 grandchildren. You can just imagine how wonderful it is when we can all get together at Innstead. Jerry was educated as a physicist and Mary as a medical microbiologist, but we both have had several different careers. ending up in the family furniture manufacturing business We both love the outdoors and have enjoyed backpacking with our boys and then their children. We have a very little island on a lake in southern NH. It is an old fishing camp, but Jerry built a bunk house for the grand kids and their friends. It is primitive, but we like to spend as much time there in the summers as our busy lifestyles allow. In retirement Jerry has become very serious about wood carving and not only produces and exhibits, but is a director and the Treasurer of the 500 plus member New England Wood Carvers club.. Mary manages Innstead, the Camp and a variety of flower and vegetable gardens.. .
Why the Owner Chose Cruz Bay:
The water has always been an attraction for us both and finding St John was an epiphany vacation. We knew we would come back. We end the New England summer, which we draw out through the foliage season, when we close up camp. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to then be able to extend the warm weather by stepping into a new summer in St John. Hardy New Englanders we are happy to come home for the Holidays. We think winter here in New England is special. Mary loves to snowshoe. And the burning season starts in January where we clean up last year's brush. And it is a good excuse to get outside.
