Gull Cottage is built of stone, with stonewalls in all the interior rooms of the villa. It resembles a picturesque chateau of the French countryside that has been infused with an elegant Caribbean essence. This is essentially a one level home, with only the third bedroom on the upper level. The living room is the center of the house, and the other rooms branch off the living room. The two master bedrooms are located on opposite sides of the living room and offer excellent privacy, with gorgeous stone baths and showers. A large office/study adjoins the west master bedroom and also serves as an extra bedroom. There is a large deck off the dining and living rooms, and a small, very sunny white sand beach lies between the deck and the sea wall. The stone sea wall was built for storm surge protection and part of the top of the wall was widened and tiled to create a cozy sunset patio. When you sit on the wall it’s much like being on a boat in the harbor, it’s really a unique spot. There is an opening in the seawall for swimming and snorkeling access to the tranquil waters of the harbor. Surrounding the villa are paved and sand walkways that weave through very lush, carefully maintained tropical gardens. The location of Gull Cottage is one of its best features, for it’s about 60 feet from the harbor. The views from Gull are superb, with sailboats floating peacefully on the palm fringed harbor in the foreground, and St. Thomas, the St. James Islands and blazing sunsets in the background. It's a short drive (5 minutes) into Cruz Bay, and it’s also a short walk (5 minutes) to the restaurants, beach, spa and shops at the Westin Resort, but Gull remains a world removed from that upscale resort. The living room has varnished mahogany floors, stone walls, mahogany French doors, antique furniture and cathedral ceilings with skylights, which all combine to create a comfortable and stylish living area. An antique armoire contains a cable TV/VCR and a stereo/cassette. There are with 3 sets of wall-mounted speakers including deck speakers. High-speed satellite Internet access is provided. The ocean front dining room has screened windows on three sides, which give this beautiful room an indoor-outdoor atmosphere. The wooden table seats 6-8, or dine on the deck five steps from the BBQ grill at a table also seating 6-8. The beautiful kitchen includes stonewalls accented by custom built mahogany cabinets. The appliances include a 4-burner gas stove, dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, garbage disposal, blender, coffeemaker, anodized commercial cookware and quality dinnerware. A gas BBQ grill, telephone and washer/dryer are also provided. The three air-conditioned bedrooms were designed to insure lovely views and maximum privacy. The romantic French countryside master bedroom on the west has a beautiful view of the harbor from the antique bed. A large private office/study with a 9' mahogany desk and a futon couch adjoins the west bedroom and can serve as a fourth bedroom for kids. The master bedroom on the east continues the French theme with handsome stonewalls, antiques and a queen wicker bed. The guest bedroom (twins) on the upper level is accessed by exterior stairs, has a private deck and is loved by older children. Each bedroom has a private tiled bath and the two lower baths have gorgeous hand cut stone showers trimmed in mahogany.

About: We’re from Florida, so unlike so many of our fellow homeowners on St. John we didn’t come here to get away from the cold and cruel miseries of a long winter. We came to St John on a vacation and we quickly realized that this is a unique and fascinating island like no other place we’ve ever been. From there it was just a matter of time before we decided that St. John would be a wonderful place to own a vacation home. We did a bit of shopping around looking at other homes, and then we looked at Gull and it was love at first sight, and our search was over.
Why Great Cruz Bay: Before we bought Gull we sat on the deck and just absorbed the sights and sounds of the harbor and were fascinated by this harbor side location. We love being at the water’s edge, and whether you swim, snorkel, kayak or paddleboard, this house offers a great location for all water sports enthusiasts. But if you never go in the water, there’s still something very special and relaxing about looking at boats floating peacefully on the water a few feet in front of you. The soft, romantic and island elegant atmosphere of this home also captured us. It really has a warmth and appeal that reminds us of homes in the French countryside, yet the harbor side location and the beach out front gives it a distinctly island flavor.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa: Having a small beach in your front yard gives Gull a unique quality that only a few homes on St. John possess. The small tiled sitting area on the beach wall is definitely a unique feature, and for morning coffee or evening sunsets it is our favorite place to sit and relax. Access to the deep water anchorages of Great Cruz Bay allows you to add boating activities to your vacation. We’ve read guest comments about being picked up from the wall and being whisked away for a day of fun on the water. Gull is one of very few homes with a spacious and comfortable home office. If you need to bring some work while you’re on vacation, you’ll love Gull’s big, private and comfortable office, equipped with high-speed satellite access. The sounds, sights and sweet aroma of the sea just outside your windows also creates an ultra romantic ambiance that is ideal for honeymooners and lovers, but this house is also perfect for families with kids.
