This is to introduce you to the immediate area at the foot of our hill and greater St. Maarten nearby.
The best supermarket on the island and perhaps in all of the Caribbean is Grande Marche back at Bush Rd.; you passed it on the way in from the airport. New Fresh Market is closer and nice. Check out the selection of Dutch cheeses.
Nearer the house is the Food Club on Illedge Rd. Go back to Bishops Hill Rd. and left on to Illedge. Its about 1/2 mile up on left. You passed it on the way to the house. (about 2.5 miles) Its a great quick place to shop for most groceries etc. without going back to town. Tip the bag boys.
Mom and Pop's is a convienence store on the Dutch side dock at Oyster Pond. Take a right at the bottom of the hill and a left about 1/4 mile later toward the harbor. Its opposite Mr. Busby's Beach Bar. Its a really nice little store and especially good for early morning coffee and croissants. Opens at 7 am.
At the bottom of the hill, you can go essentially straight to the French side. There is a small grocery and bakery just over the hill; has basics, baguettes and croissants til about 9pm. Euros and $
Mr. Busby’s Beach Bar is on the Dutch side and on Dawn Beach; breakfast ,lunch and dinner.
On the dock opposite, The Big Fish is a very nice restaurant for seafood.
French side: Just over hill into France there are several nice places: Le Planteur; very nice patio dining overlooking Oyster Pond with good food. Captain Oliver's is visible from the house and is a fun eatery on the dock. On the same dock, The Dinghy Dock has the 'best ribs' on the island. Just over the hill into France and beyond the road to Captain Oliver’s is the best French food this side of Grand Case; L’Oasis. It’s opposite the small grocery.
Westin Hotel is about a mile down the road; a right at the bottom of the hill. There is a casino, bar and outdoor restaurant overlooking the water. Sunday Brunch is huge !
On the Dutch side everyone uses US dollars. On the French side, the currency is the Euro, although some establishments accept dollars. Exchange rates differ from place to place. Credit card charges on the French attach an exchange rate plus a service charge.
There is a free ATM at the Westin Hotel; just inside the front door.
There are 37 beaches on St. Maarten and all beaches have public access. The closest beach to our house is Dawn Beach at the bottom of our hill to the East. Park at or near Mr. Busby's beach bar. Public access is through a grassy walkway o the right, or just walk through the restaurant. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available here for a small fee as at most beaches.
Orient Beach is visible from the house due north. It is about two miles away along the coast road. It’s an excellent beach and despite rumors most people keep their suits on. Lots of water activities here from parasailing, snorkeling, windsurfing, crystal clear turquoise water and dozens of eateries.
For a private spot find Guana Bay Beach, long white and unspoiled. Worth the hunt. There is a small beach bar there. Extraordinary Beaches are found across the island at Long Bay, Prune bay and Baie Rouge.
Mullet Bay golf office: 011 599 - 545-2850. They are open every day from 7 AM. Reservations must be made at least 2 weeks in advance. Fees are $80 green fee for 18 holes; $40 for a cart ($20 if shared); $30 for clubs.
Year Purchased: 2007
About: The photo is our family at Thanksgiving. We have much to be thankful for. We have spent Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving in St. Maarten as a group.
Why Oyster Pond: This property looks like a villa on Lake Como or Corfu that was picked up and placed on a mountainside in the Caribbean. Its heaven.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa: Grand views and tropical privacy make this property unique. On the property you can find mangoes, bananas, passion fruit, star fruit, papaya and canips. Welcome to the Caribbean.
The kitchen is well equipped and there is a grill the size of a Buick. All marble countertops (from France) make dining in a delight. Eat by the pool or on the veranda or in formal dining room. Each bedroom has AC but rarely needed in winter season as winds cool off the hillside.
