Caunes Minervois house description
Caunes Minervois is situated in the vineyards of the Aude Valley at the base of the Montaigne Noir, an hour from the sea. Caunes is 20 Kilometers from Carcassonne (a medieval walled city). Caunes was once a walled medieval village that has managed to maintain its historic architectural beauty without becoming touristy. Its 7th century abbey is near to the house in the center of the village. The village has all of the amenities (grocery stores, prize winning butcher, deli, bakeries, pharmacy, cafe bars and restaurants). Buses connect the village to Carcassonne which has a colorful market 3 times a week.
The house is three-stories tall and has a facade dating from the 17th century. The house is traditional in design (thick walls, high beamed ceilings, and shuttered windows). It has a large modern kitchen with a fireplace and French doors leading out to the courtyard, a large living room (with 2 French doors facing the courtyard), the tiled master bathroom has a shower, bidet, toilet, and sink. It also has a sliding glass door which goes out to large covered balcony (which faces the abbey). The second bathroom has a bathtub, stylish vanity/lavabo, and toilet. There is also a WC (half bath) on the ground floor. The 3 bedrooms have a choice of beds -- queen, double, and 2 twin beds. The courtyard has a table with an umbrella (seating for 6) and a barbecue. The house is simply decorated with antiques of the region and art work from trips abroad.
"We had a wonderful time. We really appreciated the tasteful way your house is decorated, and it is so immense!"
"Everything was great! Thanks so much for the use of the house and all the help you provided before we arrived. Everything was as you said..... Our children went up to the little store each morning to pick up the milk and croissants while the folks slept-in."
"We'd love to come back some time, for a longer stay."

Centerpiece for a memorable vacation
Centerpiece for a memorable vacation
My wife and i spent two weeks in Caunes-Minervois during June 2012. She attended a painting workshop and I toured the Middle Ages! The village is absolutely authentic and perfect, with stone houses, narrow streets, a grocery store, a bakery (baguettes and croissants!), a hotel and a B&B, fountains, flowers, a river, several nice restaurants and cafes, and friendly neighbors. Peals from the bell tower regularly honor time or announce ceremonial gatherings. In the middle of this other worldly environment, literally a stone's throw from the landmark medieval abbey, is the home of our congenial hosts, perfectly sited and comfortably and tastefully furnished to guarantee a happy and memorable stay in the Minervois. The house offers all the amenities we needed for quiet times or for entertaining visiting friends and family. We appreciated the well equipped kitchen, spacious dining and living areas, lunches on the outside terrace, and the convenience of a washer and dryer. The countryside offers innumerable opportunities for exploration and discovery. It is dotted with many small villages, each unique, often with noteworthy architectural and historic sites or a fine restaurant, and all surrounded by lovely vineyards producing wonderful wines. There are also fine hikes into the hills above Caunes, traversing ancient trails and visiting quarries famous for their special brown marble. Does this sound too good to be true? It's actually all there, including the home of the Wolffs. We will definitely stay there when we return next year!

We stayed at the house in Caunes for a week in June. It is very comfortable, clean and has enough room for a family or two couples. The washer & dryer were a definite plus. It is nicely located to the Abbey and visitors center. We had a wonderful dinner at the Hotel D"Alibert and another memorable one in Citou. Caunes is situated nicely for day trips to Trebes, Lagrasse, Lastours, Carcassone, Homps, Narbonne and the limousis caves. The french countryside was so beautiful it made our day trips even more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend the apartment to anyone looking to stay in southern France. We rented a car at the train station in Carcassone.

Comfortable house in great locale
Comfortable house in great locale
I have stayed in the this house every years since 2000. I am returning this year (2011). I have found the house easy to access, with a fully functional kitchen, comfortable beds, and lots of space for six people. It is simple, unpretentious and easy to care for. The patio provides adequate space for various meals al fresco. The barbecue has served me well all these years. When we are not out at favourite restaurants, we are always using the barbecue. The village, Caunes, where the house is located is a perfect hide-away from the main tourist bustle but is only twenty minutes from Carcassonne and all its charms including an excellent market three times a week, several good restaurants and, the piece-de-resistance, the citadelle on the hill south of town. Caunes is also only forty to forty-five minutes from the Mediterranean. The whole region is stuffed with incredible, unspoiled treasures to explore. After all these years I still discover new things every year. The village is also a treasure itself. It has all the amenities and services a house stay requires. There are restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries, butcher shop, artisan shops, wineries, a cafe, a bank with aTM, a pharmacy, an ancient quarry where they dig up stunning red and grey marble, hairdressers, a newsstand, souvenirs, a post office, several doctors, and very friendly neighbours. Be sure to say "Bonjour" when you pass them in the streets. It even features a restored abbey established by a writ from Charlemagne In fact, the town itself is a delight to explore.

Manager response: Ian is wonderful - over the years we have have exchanged many emails and talked on the phone. Even though we've never met him in person, we feel we know him. He understands the essence of what the region has to offer. His ideas of what to see and do in the Minvervois pepper our guest book.
Step Back in Time
Step Back in Time
My husband, a close friend and I have recently returned from two wonderful weeks in Caunes-Minervois, a medieval village in the Languedoc region in southern France. Our rental house is located in the old section of the village directly across from the abbeye, which was commissioned in the 8th century. The house was so comfortable with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. The kitchen contains all the modern conveniences as well as a large table where we spent many evenings enjoying the local fare. The small patio in the garden was a quiet place to enjoy afternoon tea or a glass of wine. There is also a washer and dryer, not often found in European rentals, which made packing so much easier as we could limit our clothes to a smaller suitcase, leaving the large and heavy suitcases at home. The village of Caunes is charming with all the amenities necessary for integrating into everyday life. There is a market up the street from the house that carries an impressive selection of regional cheeses and wines as well as beautiful local produce and basic household goods. Around the corner from the market is a baker from whom we purchased fresh croissants and bread each morning. A few blocks into town is another bakery with a slightly wider selection of pastries. There are several good to excellent restaurants in the village. All of this is a quaint village of 1400 extremely friendly inhabitants. Caunes is an easy drive to many historical locations, museums, caves and restaurants. Within a couple of hours you can be at the coast or in the mountains. Hiking around the village is easy and affords spectacular views of the surrounding areas. There was so much more to see and to visit that we couldn't fit into two weeks - a very good excuse to return. The couple who own the house could not have been more helpful nor friendlier in making our visit to France one of the best holidays ever!!!

About: Bruce is an attorney and Tara is a health policy advisor. We have a passion for travel especially to our favorite village in France. We love French food as you can see from our picture.
Why Caunes Minervois:
We feel in love with Caunes Minervois on our very first visit to France. It was a more sleepy village then, but over the years it has managed to keep the magic despite being "discovered" by others aside from ourselves. We love the wine of the Minervois, the wonderful hiking, the easy drive to the beach, and the history. But most of all we love the friendly people of Caunes.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our house is large and has an easy feel to it. I like sitting at the cafe table on the balcony drinking coffee or wine and watching the birds fly around the abbey tower. Its fun to have a bakery nearby for morning treats and fresh baguettes.
