Last House on Point in Casco Bay

Bedrooms 4
Space 1,500 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, sleeps 8, fully equipped including linens.

Our home, the last house on a point of land, has been our peaceful summer retreat since 1986. Decks on both sides afford both an east and west view of the water. The rocky shoreline has a few sandy places for sunbathing and swimming depending on the changing of the tide. We enjoy harbor seals, blue herons, osprey, geese, gulls, and we've even seen bald eagles!

The interior has a comfortable, open floor plan downstairs with full bath and laundry. There are four bright, cozy bedrooms and a full bath upstairs. Two of the bedrooms open directly onto the balcony which makes it possible to lie abed and view the water beyond.

In addition to the usual amenities, we leave the kitchen stocked with spices, condiments, baking ingredients, and canned goods with the understanding that whomever uses the last of anything replaces it for incoming guests. There is wireless internet and basic cable.

Our best recommendation is that folks keep coming back. Check out our guest reviews!

PLEASE NOTE: From June 1 to October 1, we strongly prefer weekly rentals which begin and end on the weekend.

About Mark and Carol Peterson

We have bought and renovated many houses over our lifetime and Thea was a particular challenge because everything needed to be upgraded. Once we got the first floor in livable condition we raised the roof on one side to allow for two queen size bedrooms with water view and two smaller bedrooms behind. Over the years we continued to make cosmetic improvements - our latest being new counters in the kitchen. At this point there is very little of the original house left.

Mark and Carol Peterson purchased this house in 1986

Why Mark and Carol Peterson chose Cumberland

We had been looking for a summer home on the Maine Coast for many years and when we saw this property we bought it in our hearts before we'd even viewed the interior. The location was everything!

Coincidental with this is we spent several summer family vacations on Bustin's, the little island that one can from this location. Now when our adult children return each summer with their own children we all journey out to there to see where we spent many pleasant times as a young family.

What makes this house unique

Being the last house on a point is indeed a unique feature. Often during the full moon or the new moon, the causeway we drive across covers with a few inches to a eighteen inches of water at high tide. End result? We're an island for ten minutes to two hours depending on the height of the tide.

The tidal changes also brings changing wild life to our area. Great Blue Herons come and go with the tides as do geese, ducks, ospreys, and even striped bass. Our grandson caught a 22" one off the beach in front of our deck.

The best part is when an eagle comes to roost in one of the high pine trees in hopes of scoring a baby osprey.

Guestbook comments from the manager

British Guests wrote the following unsolicited note to us...

"WE have just returned from a holiday in the USA with our daughter and her family and were fortunate to spend a week in your home.

"This is really to thank you for providing such a well equipped rental home in an idyllic setting. We appreciated the effort you made to present your home with such complete provisioning was far beyond what would be found in most holiday homes.

"In the past 20 years or so we have spent many happy holidays in excellent accommodations but must say that your home has been best of all."

Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

Thea is different from all other rentals we have known. When you are there it feels like you are the luckiest people in the world to know the folks who own this place and call it their home. It feels like your home, too, as everything you could want to relax in comfort is there. At the same time, it takes you far away from your usual world, as Thea is perched on a tiny island at the edge of the sea! How fabulous to see ithe ocean all around you, all the time, out of every window, and to hear it lull you to sleep at night. We have been especially appreciative of the detailed guidebooks the owner's provde to answer every question you may have about the house and the many attractions in the vicinity. Every time we go back, the owners have added amenities and renovations - this time, WiFi and cable access for computers, new gas heating system, and an additional patio on the front so you can enjoy contemplating the sea from yet another direction! We've had great dinners with friends around the big table and quiet days of solitude, tourist days up and down the coast and quiet nights by the fireplace; canoeing around the islands and walking around the point. The creativity Flying Point Island inspires has been awesome: we write, we play instruments, we take photographs; we laugh, we sing, we dance. Bliss.

One word,"PERFECT"!

  • 5 of 5

Part of me wants to keep this treasure a secret. Not only is this a perfect place to be; the owners are wonderful to deal with. Not one negative comment to be made. Very happy with our stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for this kind response. We do try very hard to make our guests stay comfortable and stress free. We have actually had folks stay that they don't want to do a review so they can have less competition and more access to our home.

Owner's Response: We like this review because it acknowledges our personal opinion. Our location is so amazing and it is difficult to share... Even with photos. It is also consistent with the remarks of other guests. Location, location, location!

Perfect place for a gathering

Sweet location, wonderful space, beautiful surroundings. Our stay was comfortable and fun. Sunset and Moonrise over the bay -- icing on the cake. My Mother's Day reunion was made perfect in this warm & cozy home.

Owner's Response: We are delighted to have had these guests... a group of women who care about each other. It is especially gratifying to us to have folks "retreat" to our home and enjoy the surroundings as well.

Amazing home with stunning views!

  • 5 of 5

Girls weekend away. My friends and I loved our time at Thea. A beautiful home with incredible views from every window of Casco Bay. We loved how peaceful it was and how comfortable we felt at Thea. A wonderful place to get away and enjoy nature at its best. Mark and Carol were very responsive to questions, which was appreciated. Thank you Mark and Carol for sharing your home with us. We loved it!

Owner's Response: We have often had small groups of women (and even a few men's groups!) stay at our house as a "retreat". We like being able to share our home with these groups. Often people talk about the space as nourishing and healing.

Enjoying Thea

  • 5 of 5

“Home Away” is exactly the right description of Thea, the house we have rented for the past five years at the far reaches of Freeport, Maine. Casual, comfortable, private, fully stocked, it demands little more than that its occupants enjoy their stay. As the last house on a peninsula jutting into Casco Bay, it also offers much more than a house: water views from every window; a lovely, cooling breeze; tides lapping at the rocky shore; and wildlife enough to keep nature lovers happy—harbor seals, horseshoe crabs, wildflowers, ospreys, terns, cormorants, and other waterfowl aplenty. Even a porcupine, which ambles by to spend the day in the woods between the house and the point! Although the owners succeed in providing the amenities of home for a satisfying vacation experience for their tenants, it can also be said that the very location of Thea alone goes far in doing that.

Having said all that, we do hope our praise does not send vacationers flocking to the house, for we would miss our opportunity to return.

Nearest Airport
20 Miles
Portland, Maine
Car: necessary

Close to Portland, Freeport shopping (home of LLBean), Bowdoin College, museums in Bath and Brunswick, and many state parks and beaches. Our home, almost surrounded by water and at the high tides with the new moon and the full moon, briefly becomes an island. Under most circumstances this does not impact your visit. Once in a while though you have to use our tide charts to plan when you will leave or return.
