Enjoy your stay at this peaceful, gently sloping lakefront property on quiet Mill Creek Cove on Norris Lake just around the point from Waterside Marina which is located just 7.5 miles northeast on Highway #61 from exit #122 on I-75; only 30 minutes north of Knoxville. The kitchen, both bathrooms, and sunroom have been renovated and updated these past two winters.
The single-level 50+ year-old cozy, rustic house has a den w/ceiling fan, a stone wood-burning fireplace (wood not provided), and a day bed. The master bedroom has a queen-sized bed with antique furniture and a full shower/tub bath beside it. A second bedroom with an antique double bed is on the lakeside and has a view of the lake; the third bedroom also has a double bed and a small windowseat with a cot-sized mattress. There is a full tub/shower bath between these two bedrooms. A large paved driveway in front of the house has room for several cars or trucks and boat trailers.
In addition to the full-service kitchen and a separate laundry room, there is a bright, large sunroom facing the lake with a huge table for those fantastic meals. Both the den and the sunroom open onto a huge deck, one-third of which is covered and has a porch swing, a second swing, hooks for a baby swing, a gas grill, a ceiling fan, deck chairs, and rocking chairs. A stone-lined easy path leads from the bottom of the deck stairs (just 9 steps down) through the wooded back yard (approximately 200 yds in summer) to your own private dock with a ladder, large umbrella for shade, and boat or wave-runner tie-off cletes.
It is quite unique to find a place on Norris that does not require a steep hike to the lake and back to the house or a long, extremely curvy drive to get to it. We love our gentle slope (about 200 yards in the summer) to the lake. Also, it is quick and easy to get to from the interstate. Since TVA raises and lowers the water seasonally, this gentle slope requires that we have an easily movable dock. However, it is plenty big enough to accommodate your boat or watercraft, and for your group to sit on, swim off of, and fish.
Waterside Marina, a very short walk though not visible from the house or dock, has a small restaurant and store and rents covered slips and pontoon boats (they must be reserved early). They also have live music occasionally on weekends! Although the Marina does not accommodate public boat launching due to limited parking space, they do allow our renters to launch and drive the boat around to our dock for the week. However, you must park your vehicle and trailer back in our driveway. There is enough paved driveway space to park 3 trucks with trailers. There is a Super Walmart and several restaurants near the interstate exit only seven easy miles away. Although many of the conveniences are within a few miles, the area is peaceful, wooded, and within a quiet, friendly neighborhood that has been established for over 50 years.
The house is 5 miles from Big Ridge State Park, 7 miles from Norris Dam State Park, and 6 miles from The Museum of Appalachia. Both parks offer wonderful activities including covered picnic areas, volleyball, softball, tennis courts, hiking trails, and a variety of playgrounds. The Chuck Swan Wildlife Management Area, a short boat ride from the house, is an undisturbed 25,000 acre wildlife preserve offering licensed fishing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain bike riding, wildlife observation, birding, and photography.
The 'Wood Duck Inn' is extremely accommodating to couples, family gatherings or small groups.

About Martie Wood
We are empty nesters that live in Knoxville and have a Bloodhound named Hank. Scrog is retired and Martie provides 1 to 1 academic therapy to students with dyslexia and related learning issues.. Our grown children also live in or near Knoxville. We have celebrated many birthdays, holidays, and gatherings at our lakehouse.
Martie Wood purchased this House in 1989
Why Martie Wood chose Union County
We love Norris Lake and have always taken our family there when we have had the chance. We searched for several years for a place on the lake that was fairly level and a short drive from Knoxville, and we found it. We bought it two days after we saw it. That was 28 years ago!
What makes this House unique
We mainly enjoy the peacefulness of being on the cove, that it is so easy to walk down to the lake, and that we are so close to the Marina but not impacted by the noise or crowds there. When people go out of the Marina, they usually go the opposite direction toward the open lake, so our cove remains peaceful. Also, the sunset there is beautiful and most of our excellent neighbors live there year round making it a very safe and friendly place.

We were in the area visiting relatives and found the Wood Duck Inn to be convenient for the four of us "out-of-towners" to have a home base. The home was very comfortable, and we would have liked more time to spend there -- perhaps on another visit.
I am so glad your family was able to use our house to visit. I love it when it is used that way. You were a long way from home, but if you come back one day, I promise to find an Oregon Duck to add to the duck collection.
A great place for a great vacation!
Great property. Very convenient to highway and stores. Very quiet and comfortable. We spent hours fishing and swimming. Would recommend!
I am so glad you enjoyed your peaceful week at the Wood Duck Inn. We hope to see you again!
Quaint, family friendly and convenient
We've been renting lake houses on Norris Lake for over ten years now. The Wood Duck in was cozy and convenient. Lake access is an easy slope (less than ten stairs) and the deck is spacious with plenty of furniture for sitting and swinging. The dock is sparse but very functional. If you prefer character and charm to a McMansion this is the place for you. On the water, there is a marina around the corner, coves for fishing to the left and open water galour to the right. We like to cover some water and were about equal distance from Bubba Brews and the Shanghai. On land easy access to stores and the highway, I75. Made 3 trips into Pigeon Forge bearable. If we are traveling with 6 or less we'll be back.
Thank you and I am glad you had a good time. I appreciate your note, and have taken care of the door handle issues. You really do travel. It is a long way to Bubba Brews and to Shanghai. Gorgeous ride if you have a beautiful day, though. We hope to see you again.
Beautiful, peaceful house on the lake
The Wood Duck Inn is a beautiful house. Even nicer than the pictures here indicate. Was very peaceful and quiet,, yet conveniently located within a very short walking distance to a super nice marina. Use of the marinas launch ramp is extremely helpful with plenty of parking area back at the house for your trailer. The owners were very accommodating and helpful, if needed, but we didn't need anything. Kitchen was well stocked with everything you may need. I look forward to renting this house again next year.
It was a beautiful and peaceful place to stay. Very nice.
It was a wonderful place to stay and truly felt like home away from home. Big thanks to Martie and scrogg.
So glad you felt at home. Hope you can come back sometime. Thanks for leaving it in such good shape.
Tranquil and Quaint Cottage
The history of Wood Duck Inn is almost palpable when you walk in the 50-yr old house--from the vintage furnishings and family photographs to the stacked stone fireplace and knotty pine paneling. Like Wood Duck Inn, we have nearly 50 years of Norris Lake memories ourselves. On this trip, we fished, "bobbed" for hours with friends and family in the beautiful water near the cliff, had cookouts, and read books on the porch swing. Mill Creek cove is perfect for kayaking in the early morning or evening, when jet skiers have worn themselves out and gone home. On our last evening, we watched the Perseid Meteor Shower from our friend's dock.
Beds are comfy, plenty of space for privacy, well-equipped kitchen (although the nostalgic Hamilton Beach mixer refused to cooperate!). Great communication with the owners. The home was nearly perfect for us. The ONLY reason we didn't give it 5 stars was beyond Martie and Scrog's control--thanks to TVA, the decreasing water levels on Norris Lake throughout the summer created shallow, rocky waters near the dock. Just something to consider if you have a large boat and want it within footsteps of your vacation home.
You know it's a winner when you want to return and do it all over again! Thanks for sharing your treasure Martie and Scrog!

Thank you for responding. I sure wish that TVA would consult with me before dropping the lake. This summer, the lake never reached "summer pool," so when they started dropping it, our dock got shallow earlier than usual. Typically, it is late August or early September when we have to land our dock. We usually compensate somewhat for those who end up having to rent a slip at the marina. Also, we always tell prospective guests before renting that the August and later rentals may not get to use the dock. I am glad you enjoyed your time, and got to do some bobbing with friends.
Wakeboarding, and much more
